i have seen someone with a lvl 500 badge of the last sale (wich had 11 cards!). a card cost probably an average of 7 cent -> you would need probably 385 euro to get this level! dont think, the person has spend so much money just for a badge? i have seen similar badges from other sales as well (on different profiles). so i wonder: do they rly spend so much money for their steam level?

and of course here a little giveaway:

Well this is the gaming setup of one of the guys with lvl 10000 holiday badge.
Let's say it looks like he has a few bucks to spare for the badges ^^

My thought on this is: Even tho they spent money on the badges it is steam money and they make a lot more from trades or the market. I just don't wanna believe someone burnt like 10k bucks on the badges this sale xD
Oh well that is not a big amount to throw for some people...

He apparently has money to burn yet decides to buy some crappy Alienware desktop instead of building some actually powerful rig for that money. It somehow screams more "show-off" than "rich gamer" to me.

He says he has business relationship with Alienware and Razer so he gets special discounts tho :D

That would be a very good explanation and reason to run a machine that uses several hundreds of Watts of power on nothing. And a better case than somebody just flinging around Alienware stuff because of the heck of it. :)

Personally I don't care about the show-off part. I feature the badges that I like, and don't even level all of them to level 5 because some lower levels look cooler. Besides 500 is nothing impressive, really. Shouldn't take more than some 150-300 EUR at most, though I'd lean more towards 200 out of a gut feeling. That is of course assuming one slowly hoards cards and then crafts all the regular badges when the Sale events are running (and there are plenty of other factors that come into play with that, such as gems since last year - 1 level worth of Sale badge = 200 gems, there are games with constant request for cards in the 0.20-0.30 range with booster packs going for an average of 600 and as low as 487 or something, last I checked. Craft as low as 3 of those booster packs almost daily and well you do your math - with foils going for as high as 5 EUR each.

Of course going from 3 to 5 digits Badge-levels implies a (relatively) substantial investment, if only because there aren't enough regular 5-level badges to end up with enough sets to craft a 5 digits Summer Badge without shelling a few grands. Even so, why would one care? I mean, the guy with the 19619 badge 'works' Steam as a full-time job - and I have absolutely no difficulty in trusting his statement that more than 2 million USD worth of CS:GO skins passed through his hands. It is, after all, his full-time job.

About usefulness. I question that myself at times, then I remember that "none" is perfectly fine. What's the point of owning a Lamborghini Diablo when the speed limits wouldn't allow me to make full use of it? Oh, ok - it's a nice, physical object so it makes more sense. Let's speak wine, or food then: what's the point of indulging in a top-notch 3 digits (but not collector-tier, those go for 5 to 6 digits) Chateau d'Yquem bottle? It'll turn into piss some hours after consumption. Or that Alba White truffle that goes for a measly 2500 EUR and is not even a food but merely adds fragrance, and is easily consumed in four servings? We're humans, we can't escape the paradox of needing "useless" things (which isn't really a paradox because usefulness is subjective, but you get what I mean).

Some arabian Oil well prince decided he want to invest a million $ into crafting a badge .... and stuff happened >.<

Nice tactics volvo ... wonder how much they actually made in profit out of that >.>

15-20%-ish. The season sale cards have the biggest profit cut for them since they share the publisher portion with themselves. :) (Same goes for the Valve game cards, naturally, but the item trade generates a ton more revenue there.)

I consider it more of a hobby and an appreciation for the games I played through. When I'm done with a game, I buy enough cards for a level 5 badge. Luckily I have a few games only, but still, I'm over level 100 just from them.
Frankly, I think it is about the same in usefulness as collecting games I would never play. Or even better, since badges are not meant to be used in the first place.

25 * 52 / 0.07 /11 =1688 badge wise,
So if you want to get a badge of around this size all you have to do is save around this much and not buy games for a year :)
Plus you'll get mentioned in forums like this one xD And maybe save 250 a week instead of 25 but still xD

This will be probably hard to believe but for many people who are really into steam badges, it's much easier to craft 10k levels of holiday badge rather than 5 levels from 2k games.

So, how is it possible? $$$
