He probably traded normal cards for the holiday cards. its possible to have thousands of regular cards, and since those don't expire poeple would be happy to trade for them.

Badge level 12500 would need all 11 cards 12500 times each; well over 100000 individual cards . You think he sat there and farmed the discovery queues of thousands of accounts? That would take years :P
This is clearly a case of massive buy orders with just pure cash backing them up. There's no other way to obtain that many cards.

Even then, the daily cap of 3 cards would require an astronomical amount of alts to even make a dent in a badge level like in the screenshot above. Even 100 alts farming 3 cards per day would only get you 4200 cards in 2 weeks, this guy would have needed well over 100000 cards for that badge level.

I just use the left over I have in my wallet, after buying a game, for making badges. Sometimes I sell unwanted emoticons or wallpapers. But spending such a large amount on crafting badge is kinda crazy.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've thought about that possibility too but really doubt it, Steam releases new games with trading cards so frequently that it'll almost always be cheaper to craft any other game badge since holiday sets are extremely expensive. But for lazy and overly rich people it's a good choice since you can just place buy orders in bulk instead of tracking down different games all the time, so you probably have a point :D

But the highest level account on steam (914) requires 92 badges crafted just to make one level.

so you are saying you saw only about 500 lvl badge??
What about 14141 lvl?

that's hardcore! XD
or The Cpt Froggy visitor of this site has over 10 000 :P

He is actually the highest current lvl in all of Steam.

Highest I've seen so far is level 19619 holiday badge
Comment has been collapsed.
with that level I bet he receive a booster every 15 seconds...

Short answer yes.
I don't understand badges myself, but then again, I'm a collector so to criticize them would be 'the kettle calling the pot black' sort of deal :P.

for the extremly high levels, they can even earn money of this^^ they get much attention so they can for example trade very much or make a product placement,... but for lower levels, i dont understand it as well...

So it is not only cosmetic. Now have more sense for me:)
About lower level, I am definitely there and my only motivation was to have some background for/from the game I like and afcorse the opportunity which created for my brother to say that I am stupid:)

I believe that the higher your steam level is, the more chance you have to get a booster drop. I'm not sure if there is a limit, but if there isn't, people with a super high level, probably get multiple boosters per day, which they can sell to make more money (which they can spend to get even higher level). This is ofcourse assuming that those people also have a lot of games for which they can receive boosters.

True, but that time frame is in several years, if not a full decade. It may have a sweet spot where the return period is the lowest, but since the booster boost is getting relatively smaller as you level up, but levelling is getting linearly more expensive, the higher the level, the less likely to ever make money on booster drops.

I have a little cash to burn on the hobby of levelling up on Steam, but since my market stats show a slow but steady increase in the negatives, the hands-on experience of being level 100 and still see about a dozen booster drops per year makes me want to disagree on that hopeful statement.

I personally don't invest anything into leveling. I sell all duplicate cards and from that money I buy others to get badges. It's not a very quick way to level, but it doesn't cost me anything (except for the games, but I only get games I will play).

Well, I have few badges and level them up completely. This also contributes to the higher investment rate, true. On the other hand, it is usually cheaper to get 40 cards at 7 cents than buying enough games (even bundle games) that would drop that amount.

your badge is three times as high as mine!!! you seems to be one of the rich guys?^^

Just wondering what kind of person writes Capitalist as the first thing on his profile and shows off with his multiple expensive gaming laptops/desktops and crazy GTX TITAN X 3-Way SLI setups.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes, they do. But what else would you use a triple-SLI Titan for? Because certainly not for gaming. There are no games that would even make them turn up their fans a little. And not for rendering, because buying a Quadro would have been cheaper and more effective.
Comment has been collapsed.
An equivalent compute card like a Quadro would have costed several thousand dollars each.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, it is cheaper than 3×1100 or 3×1300, isn't it? :D
I cannot find any comparison on rendering/workstation performance on that and Titan X though. I mean there are search hits, but no actual comparison data. o.O And now I'm actually intrigued.

Heh, with that kind of power. :)
Still, come to think about it, probably the biggest question here is what is the purpose of that kind of pre-built from Alienware. Other than rich kids' dickwagging. I mean what commercial use would a triple-SLI Titan X build have, and who would even buy such a thing?

dont know never asked him.. Since i dont like to distrb others.. also he is in my friend list... it was surprising to see that i was able to gift him a DLC which he dint had :P that was quite surprising... Since all my friends who owned that game had that DLC but he dint...

i only hit 4 this sale, then gemmed my last 2 event cards

Many people don't bother crafting badges until the big sales, so they slowly accumulate cards from booster pack drops/bundle duplicates added to second accounts/trading/whatever. By crafting the bagdes during the sale, they get a sale card instead of a useless coupon. It's not much compared to the guys chasing each-other to level 1000, but it might be enough to impress random internet strangers. Yay.

that's what i do -- think i got 3 event cards through crafting the other card sets i'd slowly collected since the summer sale. i thought every 10 steam community levels increased your chances at getting foil cards to drop or come out of boosters, but of all the cards i've dropped or unpacked i've had like 2 or 3 foil.

as a random internet stranger myself, i'd be more impressed watching video streams of them making mountains of dollars and then burning them with chanel n.5

It's funny, even buying badges like a madman is pretty cheap, compared to a lot of other hobbies... :) I have known some people who spend more than that fooling around with their "classic car" that never seem to leave the garage...
At least you can click on the badges and imagine the time Idle Master played that game... :)

Well you could get cards from purchasing stuff on steam, so it was possible to just buy whatever your friends wanted for them so you could get the cards. You could also get cards from exploring queues and as people mentioned, you could trade holiday cards for regular cards easily.
Edit: Oh and another thing I forgot, there are websites in my country (I think they exist in other countries as well) that people sell steam gifts on them, now these guys probably earn a lot of cards during events like this. And in case you wondering why they exist, it's because we can't use credit cards in our country (actually we can but it would be very expensive) and our currency is not supported on steam (or any other website that sells steam games).
Also thanks for the giveaway, awesome game!

i have seen someone with a lvl 500 badge of the last sale (wich had 11 cards!). a card cost probably an average of 7 cent -> you would need probably 385 euro to get this level! dont think, the person has spend so much money just for a badge? i have seen similar badges from other sales as well (on different profiles). so i wonder: do they rly spend so much money for their steam level?
and of course here a little giveaway:
