I used to work at a convenience store with a bad manager but not now. Since November I've been working in a warehouse taking apart computers and other electronics for recycling. I am enjoying working with my hands but I've gotten lots of little cuts on them and a deep one last week, ouch! The computers sometimes are full of dust and one time full of pink fiberglass insulation, please explain if you know why somebody would do that. Getting a new job was very healthy for my mentality.

Is there a giveaway here?

Fiberglass will do harm to your lung on a long period, I recommend you to get a mask even it's kind of uncomfortable, mental healthiness is an important key for work, glad you left the former toxic atmosphere!

I'll take a look at masks but I'm fine without for now and fiberglass was just a one time thing. I'd much rather the toxins from the new workplace over the last spot!

Congrats on the new job and on your level 10 milestone!

PC's are dangerous! Unfortunately I have the scar to prove it. Glad to hear you are enjoying it though.

Thanks Corran! I think scars are reminders of some of the best memories and should be cherished. Also they are literal battle scars so be proud of them!

Congrats on the new job, glad to hear it's working out well!

The scariest thing I've seen in an old PC was a snake. A friend took in a PC from an old lady who said it wasn't working, and that there was smoke and a smell coming from the back. He opened it up to find a snake had crawled into the PC and got fried by the power supply. You could see the charred snake going into the PSU and coming out again, and it was pretty freaky.

Haha, shocking indeed! :)

I think I may have saved a picture of it, I'll try to find it. It was pretty gross, but also kind of unbelievable.

That's definitely a nest made by a mouse in that case. Small field mice in particular really love to make nests out of fiberglass insulation. Get a good set of gloves and wear an N95 rated dust mask. I really hate how those old cases have so many sharp metal edges. Most of the newer cases have those edges rounded off. Congrats on hitting level 10!

Even if the case is new and safe there's a way to get cut on every component that you put inside haha but yeah it's nice because they are easy to open and close and usually pretty spacious and also the rounded edges are a big plus. Thanks :]

Bump
I recently changed work too- was "IT Specialist" in small company that was making granite graves, now I work as "Quality Controller" in a company that makes stuff on CNC machines (I measure stuff with various devices and utilities) - my hands are full of small and deeper cuts.. I have more work to do, but so far im more happy with it

Congrats on the new job, glad you are having fun and you're saving electronic waste from going into landfills, too. I've purchased various components from electronic recycling companies online, you can get some really good deals. Especially server-grade parts, since companies tend to replace them more often than regular people replace their home PC. Xeon CPUs and ECC RAM etc.

Years of working on other people's computers here and there have left my knuckles scarred, I can only imagine doing that all day long would be like tap-dancing through a minefield. Good luck :)

Thank you, it is nice to be doing something that's somewhat beneficial to the world! I had to replace my memory right around when I started working here and I kinda wish I bought the used stuff for cheap. I think getting proper protection will help with the injuries, we'll see how that goes!

Be careful of that dust though, don't inhale too much, that will definitely not be good for your health.

It's not too bad usually, I've got a fan that helps a bit but yeah I'm gonna hopefully get a nice mask soon

I've seen people put filters on their fans to filter dust. They are proud they have caught alot of dust and wonder why their computer freezes and reboots.
.
A computer full of insulation... if its one piece, human. If its full of small pieces, mice or rats making a nest.

Computers are always full of dust. I take a leaf blower to mine outside twice a year creating a huge cloud. Protect yourself.

Quarry workers have died of lung cancer from dust. Even Flour mill workers have lung issues.

Yeah it's confirmed to be a rodent nest in one of the earlier comments in the thread. I should probably clean the dust out of my PC more often but I'm far too lazy. And I still need to find a good mask but I'm planning on grabbing one soon, it's honestly not too bad usually

You should use Thanos Gauntlets or something like that to protect your hands, a bad cut with an oxidated iron can be very dangerous if you're not vacined against tetanus.

I think those gauntlets are too bulky to work in but I like the idea! And I'm 95% sure that I did get a Tetris shot so I'm not concerned about that :P

It sounds like you prefer more friendly atmosphere at work that anything else. Feels familiar. Though my coworkers are the best, I work with clients and some of them are pain.
Good luck finding inner peace!

Congrats on the new job! It seems you like it and I am glad for that!

I once took apart and had to vacuum out a computer tower which was half full of thick cobwebs and spiderwebs (dust-bunny thick, but the entire lower half of the tower). The 3" (7-8 cm) square heatsink had a clear area about the size of a nickel (0.835"/21.21mm) in the exact center under the fan. And one wonders why the fan would scream as the computer idled. :D Fun times.

There are many reasons for working jobs you don't like (e.g. money), but never underestimate the value of two things: 1) doing a job you like, and 2) having a good boss. Those two become more valuable as time goes by.
