I want to say, I became numb when I realised this.

Je suis devenu engourdi quand j'ai .......(when I realised this)

Well what is 'this' can influence how you would say it in french but you could say..

Je suis devenu tout engourdi quand j'ai réalisé cela.

To say 'engourdi' alone would normally apply to a single part of your body being numb and would sound werid if what you mean is you froze up. Which is why I would add 'tout' .. which would be completely numb.

What I mean is that I found 'this' (its something to do with immigration, some statistics) very surprising.

Thus, yes, I "froze" up

So, in this case:
"J'ai été abasourdi lorsque j'ai réalisé ceci."
But there can be many different way to say the same thing...

Ça m'a laissé bouche bée.. (it left me speechless.. more specifically stunned with your mouth open is what that expression brings to mind).

What happens with french is there's plenty of variations that could be used to translate one expression in english. Air73's suggestion is good too.. you just gotta pick one.
