Witcher 1 is in many ways better than it's sequel :)

You can skip it if you feel you can't power through it but then you might feel a little lost on some parts.
Reading the books help too, but if that sounds like too much work just to get into a game, then its okay to
just play the game.
All in all, it is quite worth playing W1.

I currently game in my bed since I lack of a proper desk and chair, so you can imagine that the mouse isn't super stable, I also prefer gamepads because I grew as a console peas... I mean, gamer ;]

Sorry to wake this topic up, although it isn't an old post, I wanted to share my thoughts. I own both The Witcher 1 EE and The Witcher 2. First, I started playing the first game and played nearly 15 hours. After that I put it on hold and finished the second game in about 20 hours. Although the two games are not exactly connected, I knew from the beginning that i missed some stuff with skipping the first game. I checked how playing the first game changes the second game and I found some stuff. First, you will keep your sword from the first game, also a little percentage of your gold. Some cutscenes changes according to your choices in the first game. So there is that.
Other than that, I really liked the first game. As in story and as in universe. The combat was awful in the beginning but you will get used to it if you can manage to realize that it's an old game. Also, there is mods! I'm downloading just now but right now I'm trying a mod about combat rebalance and another mod that adds many stuff/graphical enchantments. Now I'm going to finish the first one, then the second one with different choices and after that I'll wait for Wild Hunt.
Hope this helps!

I enjoyed Witcher 1. The story is awesome even though I'm yet to finish it. Combat sucks, but I can look past that for a excellent RPG.

In the end, I've decided I'm probably going to just watch all the cutscenes. But... even the cutscenes, there are like 4 or 9 hours of cutscenes... it's a lot.
Haven't done it yet.

The combat system is the second worst of any game I've ever played.
I found the game to be unplayable, despite highly appreciating the quality of the lore and cutscenes.
In other words, I'm in favor of the watching cutscenes/LetsPlay approach, myself. :P

It's not about it being hard, to the contrary. It's mind-numbing and actually painful to play, or at least, was so for me. It was just atrociously done. It was the same simple, poorly done, slow-paced, clunky combat mechanism for the entire game. It felt like hitting your head against a wall, over and over and over..
Well, I've certain circumstances that make me a bit.. peculiar when it comes to repetitive tasks, so I'm sure that helped make it feel so excruciating, but it was certainly an awful combat system no matter how you look at it.
Then again, it still has nothing on this monstrosity. Seriously, that game is what they force you to play in some twisted layer of hell reserved for only the worst of online video game cheaters. :P

Play on easy. Combat is simplier and enemies die faster so you can move through the story quicker.

"That side of the anthill has only 70$ as many fire ants as that side! I mean, that's still enough to completely cover your body either way, but when they get tired of biting you, at least they won't have reinforcements, so it'll last shorter."
The experience is entirely unchanged. In fact, throwing aside the game's passing attempt at providing some sort of challenge [outside the fight against the terrible mechanics] only serves to highlight the completely uselessness of the game's combat system-
It's mindless, skill-less, astoundingly repetitive filler between cutscenes that serves no actual gameplay purpose, utility, or entertainment value.
Short of trying to mod in an enemy-insta-kill effect (and thus nearly avoid combat altogether) it's the same mindless stress-inducing grind either way. :/

It's like this:
You see a weak enemy: you switch to the fast attack style and mash the mouse button.
You see a strong enemy: you switch to the slow attack style and smash the mouse button.
granted, many story-driven third-person cRPGs have simple combat, but this adds tediousness on top of it.

Head meet wall. Repeat. :'P
Well, add in how clunky the movement/combat interface felt, on top of that mindless repetition, and.. it was stressful, far too much so to keep playing.
If someone can tolerate it, that's to their benefit, but even viewing it as an intentionally simplistic system, it simply was not in any way done "well".
I'd have preferred to lose a thousand rounds of tic-tac-toe, than keep using that combat system.. tic-tac-toe at least woulda had some variety of content and fluidity of interface. :X

Why don't you just read a recap of the story?
I googled a bit and found this for you:

Yes, I played it on easy, with sweetfx and a mod that makes the character run faster (there is a lot of walking)
it's still a nice game.

the story is awesome and considering it's the first game of the franchise, they did an awesome job to introduce characters and the world.
the mechanics are unique, from items to levels and combat.
the latter is usually considered awful because it just requires you to target-lock an enemy, click your mouse when the attack marker on screen tell you to do it and dodge some attacks. it's very simple and easy compared to witcher 2-3, which requires way more attention and practise than witcher 1 combat. not a bad thing imo, it's just different.

SuperBunnyHop made a great 3 part series of the 3 witcher games, here is Part 1, of the Witcher 1, there are minimum spoilers and they are marked in advance, is more of an analisys of the game itself.
In the end i think not playing a game, is a deservice to yourself.

I don't think so.
It was REALLY good at the time, but if you've played more modern fps/rpg type games like fallout 3/skyrim the graphics will look outdated and the controls won't be very smooth.
When Witcher 3 was coming out I thought I'd playthrough 1-2 again just for the hell of it, could not do it.
If you are going to do it, I would recommend just sticking to the main story line.

So with Witcher 3 coming out soon, I planned on playing Witcher 1 and 2.
I finally restarted Witcher 1 last night after a few years (because I used to have a craptop) and it's getting hard to get into it.
I actually don't mind the combat like most people, but everything else just bugs me. I don't mind the graphics. Although watching clipping happen with grass in the beginning of the game in a cutscene was really weird. I mean come on it's a fucking cutscene. Also a shit load of pop ins. And I can't turn v-sync on even though I'm getting quite a bit of screen tearing. The animations are just plain bad. Probably the worst part. Everyone just stands there stiff like a puppet with no emotions. Speaking of no emotions, the voice acting is really hit or miss, which doesn't help the writing I've so far seen, which makes it seem like I'm playing a super cheesy cartoon.
Does the game get better? Should I just watch/read a sumup? Or do animations and writing and stuff somehow improve as the game goes on?
Does Witcher 2 have any these same problems?
I really like playing games from the beginning (like Ass Creed 1, and Hitman 1) but I don't know if I should bother with this game, especially since it's so long.
Thoughts?
