Steam says "The product code you've entered requires ownership of another product before activation." But they key is for Theatre of War 2: Africa 1943 (https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/G8g9F/theatre-of-war-2-africa-1943) which as best i can tell is the base game of that particular set.

I don't know what to do now, as i did receive a key (that probably works, not sure what steam checks first) but i can't use it since it could technically be for any base game in steam.

Thanks

Maybe it's the wrong key? Maybe it's a key for a dlc of Theatre of War 2, and the creator of the giveaway made a mistake.

Best thing you can do is to to ask the creator to delete the giveaway

You can know the game under the key. Install SteamDB extension, then activate key on steam page.

As an alternative, because not everyone wants to install extensions, use the inspect element method as detailed in this post. Or use tools like ASF to activate keys which in my opinion is the only proper way.

Why is ASF better than the SteamDB extension, when it comes to activating keys?

I never said such a thing. It just boils down to personal preference in the end. ASF just gives you a lot of options in terms of batch activations across multiple accounts.

Neat, thanks for that. Says it is indeed the dlc 'Theatre of War: Centauro' and not the base game as the giveaway claims.

So now i have some way to get in direct contact with the author here or just flag it as not received?

Communication with creator is more polite way, as he would get affected by not recieved mark. He may replace key, or ask for deletion. I highly recommend that way as I assume you don't want to get random blacklists for refusing deletion (not like people care what does 0 level users do).

as xxxka stated, communicate with the creator first.
just leave a comment on the giveaway page and tell them the issue.
they will either replace your key or ask you for deletion.
if they do not answer or dont want to do anything, you can mark it as not-received after 7 days have passed
