I was very surprised when I first learned that some people make the RPG characters look like them.
I used to tweak every little slider, but as the character creators became more complicated recently, I just spend the minimal amount of time needed to make the character look unique and not ugly.

Same. I always play those sorts of games with a character to roleplay as and it's never "me" in that world, but just a character I make up for the story. It was surprising and eye-opening to learn that a lot of people just play as "themselves!"

I don't play many horror games so I don't see a need to be photorealistic.....😱. That said I have probably spent too long in some Bethesda games trying to produce a character who doesn't look like one of the mannequins you see in game that I can vaguely live with. Fortunately in most Bethesda game you never see the PC face that much. In games where you do see it more I sometimes put a bit more effort but often those kinds of games have simpler customisation options.

I almost always use the default character. Sratch that - I always use the default character.
I think I used to play around the character creator years ago. I think in Skyrim on my first playthrough. But in no other game. Maybe change hair and beard if default looks stupid, but overall dont care about other sliders or choices. Hell - even in Sims when I used to play it, I used default or random characters only.

Depending on the game its either going to be default or if I really like the game... a few hours...

I just use the default (or a default) and change hairstyle, beard, eye color, scars, tattoos, facepaint etc. The easy stuff. If I use any of the sliders, the end result is a monster.
Also, I don't want the character looks like me.

Immersion. Nothing wrong about trying something completely different, but many want to see themselves in those adventures or be familiar with something at least. Now you could say "just use first person", but there are the cinematics, sometimes you'd prefer TPS' bigger FOV and this wouldn't help for taking screenshots or how others view your character in online games.

Oh I didn't ask for people in general, just for myself. I grew up reading books so it's always fun for me to step into other people's shoes.
I also don't find first person immersive. Maybe it's because I go through life with peripheral vision and I see more of myself than just floating hands, I dunno :P

Most of the time I wouldn't make the character look like myself. If anything, it'd be a better version of myself I'd like to look like, you know what I mean?
Either way... "How long does it take you" is not the right question. The question should be "do you ever succeed at making it perfectly what you want it to look like", to which the answer is "no, absolutely not". 😆
While on this topic I'll also add a one-sentence rant about how the GTA Online character creator is absolutely awful and possibly the worst I've ever tried/used.

Only time I did that was in the Sims 2 and 3. But basically I don't like to look at me while playing, so I usually choose something completely different (and it takes usually 5-10 minutes)

It depends on the game. In some cases I've gone through a lot of game time and tweaks to make my character look like me. Other times I spend some time in the character creator to make someone likeable yet not myself. And other times if there are multiple races and weird things, I try to make something original, and fun or weird. Since each game is different in how much and when you can customize your character, giving even an approximate amount of time is not possible. Sometimes 1-2 minutes, sometimes weeks (in one case, years, because they updated the avatars look and I had to redo mine).

umm... a few mins? i either go by default (yes, even if it's just using plain clothes) or press the randomize button once

I spend maybe a minute on appearance and then 30 minutes to an hour on stats. I probably spend about a third of my time in the level up menu and tinkering with equipment. This is a major appeal to d&d mechanics. Sometimes the mechanics are just broken. I remember having a mounted paladin with a lance, a few traits relating to lances and mounted combat and investing most of my points to boost mounted combat with a lance. I just went around basically one shotting everything and stayed away from dungeons or areas that might negate mounted combat.
