After writing a small review (not a good one) on
a game I just played, I got to wondering. Have you reviewed a game on steam and how many have you left?

Apparently, steam says I have reviewed 36 games.

79 Reviews so far. I've taken things much more seriously in the last couple of years.

It depends. I can spend 10-20 minutes to write it all down in that format.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything but I've always wondered what is the thought process behind those template reviews? I keep seeing them all the time and many of them even appear to be using the same rating scale and possibly structure...

Difficulty:
1 = Can't remember - 5 Even your grandma could play it

It just feels like you're forcing yourself into a rigid structure that doesn't always apply / make sense and to me personally is very unenjoyable to read.

Edit: Obviously I can see you are putting a lot of effort into this which is commendable and you seem to be getting tons of Steam awards so people seem to like them but I just don't get it.

I think these "check a box" kinda reviews are an easy way for people to summarize their thoughts about a game after they're done with it. I don't know how many of those people are doing it for other people's sake (because, it's not really helpful for others if you don't put more words into it), but I think it's a nice thing to keep for yourself (and having it on your account that you used for the games is handier than keeping a journal or some text file somewhere).
Also I don't think this is relevant to Vasharal's reviews because they only use it for three things that you can't really describe any differently (length and difficulty) and for bugs I think it's helpful to see a category of "it has text bugs" vs. having some very technical explanations of the text bugs. Although that would be helpful for the dev. But not many devs read that I suppose. (actually edit, never mind, I see now that they used the template too at one point, but yeah still better than just having the boxes, for readers anyway).

Yeah... maybe I didn't read it thoroughly enough. I have to admit my brain kinda shuts down when I see that formating and the numerical values for various categories in a review. I'll give the Hogwarts Legacy one a proper read later.

It's just when I want to read a "professional" review with numerical ratings and stuff (which a lot of big gaming sites have stopped using) I'll read one of the dozens if not hundreds of professional gaming sites and blogs on the web. Which I usually already have beforehand. From a Steam review I expect something slightly different... more of a personal perspective on the game and not raw numbers.

But maybe that's just me.

It is quite interesting that there's probably more "try-hards" on steam than on websites like, goodreads for books. And even there, the "trying to be pros" are quite personal, same applies to my local movie database site (dunno if there are review on imdb?), too. I wonder why that might be? I guess it's harder to get free movie ticket, but you can definitely get advanced reader copies of books as easy as review keys of games, so I don't think that's a factor in it... I think that seeing a "professional" game review is/was easier for a casual gamer (casual as in, someone who plays games, but it's not their job), so maybe that's why. I don't even know where professional book reviews are published. I know of special magazines released by publishing houses for book sellers, but that's harder to get for a casual book reader. Not that hard, but you'd have to go out of your way. Well, anyway, interesting.

I think this stands more to preferences. The same way, how some people prefer to lay their reviews.

From a Steam review I expect something slightly different... more of a personal perspective on the game and not raw numbers.

If you read my reviews, they are a mix of personal perspectives with objective perspectives. I try to point out things I like or don't like, but not exclude the fact that there are issues, bugs, problems or that this may or may not appeal to some particular individuals. My rating is based on a system and it's something professional gaming sites have struggled keeping or removing altogether, although they are still present. I share mine here as I try to explain all parts of it.

It's true. I've removed a lot of the useless ones over time. I've learned from my mistakes and moved on to a more in-depth writing for them. Still, those areas are also to cover in short bursts a little bit of info of what to expect from the game. If they are somewhat in the game. I could write a few paragraphs, but again, that would probably take away from the available space I have to write. So, that's why I cut that part a bit short.

People who have no idea how to properly do it, but find it easy to use is what it is. I've moved on from it myself as I started reviewing games. I've realised how childish and stupid they sound.

It just feels like you're forcing yourself into a rigid structure that doesn't always apply / make sense and to me personally is very unenjoyable to read.

Actually, you'd be surprised how much easier it is for me to write in a template format. I know each section where it goes and what I need to say. It's easier for me to write a review and not lose myself in thoughts and point out the important bits of the game.

Edit: Obviously I can see you are putting a lot of effort into this which is commendable and you seem to be getting tons of Steam awards so people seem to like them but I just don't get it.

The visuals may not work for everybody and some people hate the long format. I get to tap into each section of the game and point them out. There's always room for improvement, but once you build a template and stick to it, people flock to you. I get a lot of friend requests from randoms to get more reviews like that in the future. They like that it looks neat and it offers enough information.

I think one. But I was fighting my tears as the game had a sad story so I wrote 2 words i think.
'good game' or sg like that.
But it was a really good game. I don't know which was it and I'm lazy to find out.

One, and only cause I needed that community badge that's been sitting on my profile page for years to finally fucking go away. Not much of a review either, just made a le funny. The feeling when that shiny thing finally moved was great lol, now I'm only stuck with the pee-colored game count badge. 😈
Respect to those users who share their honest opinions on games they play though, I'm just not one of them.

I was going to write one for Antichamber, but Steam won't let you review games you play through Family Share, so my number is still zero.

I usually forget or am not motivated enough to write a review.
Actually, I wish Steam would adapt Epic's rating system. Randomly ask active players for their opinions, no review required for voting. Writing reviews should still be an option ofc.

Mostly in my reviews I just write a short joke sentence relating to the game. If im going to be a little serious its just really short about what I thought about it.

215 as of now o.O

I don't bother with a review if the game has no lasting effect, or in cases when I can't even decide to make it positive or negative; or when there are so many reviews that it feels pointless to add another one to reiterate the narrative.

I have 2 reviews, not like I don't want to write more, just not sure what to write that adds anything since stuff like 'good game' or whatever is so useless that I don't want to lower my standards to that and usually by the time I play a game, other reviewers already said all that needed to be said so I don't add much and end up not writing anything.

Steam says 89, which is a surprise, really. Didn't think I reviewed so many.
I tend to review only when I have strong feelings about a game, or when there are too few reviews, or mostly fake "got this product for free" reviews. OR when most reviews are jokey/uninformative ones and I feel something important should be said.

54-- I try to review smaller games that don't have a lot of them yet so I can help out indie devs, but for bigger games i only write one if i think of a good joke or one-liner summary relating to the game. the people who review every single game they play in a thoughtful manner are amazing.

At that point I have no Idea why I'm doing this anymore xD If it helped even one person then it's worth it... But honestly IDK - write reviev for half hour and 2 people find it helpful. Sum up whole game with lame joke - people are dying to give you thumbs up xD
