Who? Never heard of him! Looks away.
(On a side- There's a picture of <this person I don't know anything about> giving the finger? No wonder the Internet hates him... not that I have any reason to know that the Internet hates him, after all I don't know anything about this "person".)

Nevaaaah.
Think of it as taking measures beforehand. When I try to take over the world one day I don't want anyone to be able to associate me with me. But since you just read that, it means I have to kill you now for knowing too much. Right behind you... ... ...made you look! ^_^

I hate this kind of threads, when I meet someone online I only recognize them for what they really are, I think of them as something above gender and appearance, but seeing all this just gives me a bad taste.
Comment has been collapsed.
I mean that I treat them accordingly to their personality and not gender or appearance.

No, IRL a person doesn't always show his tru personality, on internet a person is more likely to show his true colors. If person trolls just because noone can't really know who is then it is how he is.

I always behave the same. I mean, I'm this stupid every single minute of my life.
Comment has been collapsed.
More like it is how everyone is. People don't act the same when they're only dealing with words on a screen and not a real person, based on the simple sensory data available to them. People are less like themselves on the internet due to its dehumanization of everything that is crucial to normal human interaction. You see them as they would behave toward a vending machine or a tool, generally, not how they interact with people.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's not necessarily true. I'm pretty awful when it comes to dealing with actual, real-life humans, and yet words on a screen give me far more comfort. But, I've always been pretty broken and backwards, so I'm probably not the best example for normal human behavior.

You talk on the basis that in reality people act how they really are, but no, in reality the level of their reservation effect on how they act, on the internet it is just more likely a person will act much less reserved.
Comment has been collapsed.
Not really. On the internet, they're not dealing with people as far as they're concerned. Please note the title text: "It's easier to be an asshole to words than to people." On the internet, people behave toward each other as they would toward inanimate objects because no one is humanized when you strip away everything we consider human. They no more behave like themselves than they would in a video game. Suggesting people behave more authentically on the internet is like saying someone playing a FPS has latent homicidal tendencies that are more truly expressed in the game, where they're really 'being themselves.' People are assholes on the internet because the magic glowing picture box is making words at them that they don't like, not because they're assholes in real life.

I don't think everyone fits this description, to be honest 90% of the time what I say online is what I would say in real life, I personally think some are like you describe though for sure. I guess its different for everyone though, I have a friend thats like a real life troll, now thats a scary thing.
Comment has been collapsed.
I have heard people say they are more themselves online, its usually really introverted people for the most part. Almost like they are afraid to show themselves in life but online they feel like they can be themselves.
Guess its complicated...

Well - it simply seems that you, like me, fits into 10% of population that are real jackasses in real life as well - then there's no "social barriers" like ones wbarton was talking about to break in internet, as typical cynical asshole will break them IRL on a daily basis ;p

I am not a jackass though, well no one has really ever called me anything like that at least, most people tend to like me for the most part, my worst trait is probably that I am very opinionated and can be stubborn at times...but besides that I check out ok it seems...I will be a dick to someone irl though if they are rude or whatever though, just like here or any other forum...

if i understood him correctly, you're missing the point a bit. it's more about prejudices and stuff. online, you can be yourself if you want (yeah most people are just living out their a**hole side), because you see a nick and not a face. In real life, most people see somebody and already have an opinion about them, without knowing anything. for example, most people would see a "ugly" young boy with acne vulgaris as a nerd and therefore wouldn't want to communicate with him or take him serious. This can't happen online, because you can only judge people from how they actually behave.

When I talk to someone online I treat them as a human just without the bias of gender, appearance or any other physical traits and abit less reserved. Maybe there are people who think of other people online as nothing but virtual existence, but It's really hard for me to imagine that most of people are like that. How about you how do you treat people online.
In the end I think it might just be a question of awareness, but I still think most of people who regularly on the internet already developed sentimental awareness of other people on the internet.
