Wish I could take credit for the fix but it goes to "SinfulYT" over on Reddit... ;)

I thanked him there as well, but it was your your fast reply here that got me going. That deserves some gratitude too.

I panicked a bit, when I saw ESGST had stopped working, would really be a pain in the butt using SG without it... so fingers crossed that this fix lasts for a good long while.

I hear you, man.

Hopefully it will last or it's finally come to: Hello Firefox.

this solution will not last forever, those flags will get removed within a few months most likely(most flags I used to get rid of a bad update were gone in 1-2 months), time to swap browsers or to script version... for me the tampermonkey version happens to be even faster to.

That is a good idea, didn't even know there was such different versions.

Do you happen to know if there's a tampermonkey version of Ublock Origin as well?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

no idea, the ublock reddit pointed towards ublock origin lite which works on new version.

and ill leave it here for those using linkclump, there is a linkclump plus extension for manifest v3.

Linkclump? Never heard of it?

was just a note since I know others here use it

Wait, I did use linkclump for a long time.... Where is the working version? What did you leave here? Do not tease an old man! ;D :D

(Currently using Grabbit... but Linkclump will always be on my heart.)

Edit: oh, I see, I was lacking in reading skills -- you gave the info, I just had to search for linkclump PLUS. "Plus" was the key. Thanks! :D

Thanks for recommending the userscript... Which one are you using? The one from the OP or SquishedPotatoe's userscript version mentioned by Thexder below?

the one linked in the ESGST post

Hmm, Trying to edit ESGST settings freezes Chrome.
Can you change the settings?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I can - and have no freezes. Perhaps just a time for a good ole' restart?

Also: When following the instructions you sent the links to, I restarted Chroe after each and every one. Not sure it makes any difference (don't have enough knowledge about these things) but if you didn't then maybe try that if the issue persits?

I would just export everything and switch to tampermonkey script version, this solution is only temporary... google will delete these flags eventually and the extension will be disabled again.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's what I did this morning. I assume when chrome kills the extension by removing the work around that this ver will work as long as tampermonkey works. Is that a fair assumption?

yes, tampermonkey works on manifest v3.

You scared me there for a second... I thought ESGST itself shut down, not the chrome extension.
Works fine on Firefox btw.

Sorry 'bout that - edited the headline, don't want to scare everyone else too.

Actually now seriously contemplating switching and ditching Chrome completely.

And you can export the data in ESGST. If you don't switch browsers, you should at least look at setting backups often, in case you don't already do that.

Actually, seeing all the linked posts and the information given there - it does seem like this is only a temp-fix. Google seems adamant to shut us down here....
Firefox already installed. However, I hate change. I'm an old stubborn ass of a man (50+), and I have ADD/ADHD/slight autism issues... Change is HARD for me....

But this?! This pisses me off, and being pissed off comes easy to an old stubborn ass of a man, and drives change in spite of other issues.

That was me also but the other way around. I was already using Firefox and preferred their way of handling bookmarks, but there was a time a while back where some extensions would only release on Chrome or the Firefox version was somewhat limited compared to the chrome version, but was used to firefox already, so ended up sticking with it. Now it's looking like it was a good idea.

From one old stubborn ass of a man to another - Good job.
It doesn't really matter to me that you chose another path than I did - but the fact that you went stubborn on your choice and stuck with it? That shit garners respect. I may not approve of your choices, but I do approve of you and how you protect those very choices - Hahahahahahaha!

I must have missed that time. I've stuck to Firefox for 20+ years (and previously used Mozilla). The most irritating changes I had to endure was when they copied some features from chrome, like moving the tabs to top. The only time I launch chrome is for all these apps like geforcenow or luna (so a couple times a year).

I had the same problem, nearly switched to Firefox... but still managed to install ESGST using SquishedPotatoe' userscript version with Tampermonkey.

Yesterday, ESGST stopped working for me on Chrome, but I applied the "--disable-features=ExtensionManifestV2Unsupported,ExtensionManifestV2Disabled" Target input and it was working again.

Fast forward to today and even though the Target input is still there, ESGST isn't working anymore. Any other ideas? :(

As far as I know, Manifest v2 extension can still work if "Allow legacy extension manifest versions" (and maybe m138 and m139 as well) parameter is enabled (in chrome://flags/#temporary-unexpire-flags-m137) and the extension is loaded as unpacked

Well, I just enabled the parameters but I'm not sure what you mean by loading ESGST as unpacked.

With development mode on, you can load and install extension from a folder. I believe I saw a link to the zip file around

P.S. ...Or maybe I'm wrong and there's no zip version of extension :(

You can use userscript version as mentioned just above. This is probably the easiest solution

Unfortunately, it did not work as I am met with the following message:

"Cannot install extension because it uses an unsupported manifest version."

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So you have a unpacked extension? Check the flags then.

Permalink

Both flags (m138 and m139) are enabled, but now I have also enabled the "Allow legacy extension manifest versions" option and the "Cannot install extension because it uses an unsupported manifest version." error disappeared, which allowed me to load the unpacked version of ESGST that I found on GitHub.

However, even though Chrome finally installs the unpacked version of the extension, I now have an "Errors" button right next to "Details" and "Remove" and upon entering the "Errors" section, I am met with the following message:

"Manifest version 2 is deprecated, and support will be removed in 2025. See https://developer.chrome.com/docs/extensions/develop/migrate/mv2-deprecation-timeline for details."

And the above message is then followed by a huge raw error message text under it.

And no, the extension is still not working.

Message only indicates that it's v2 of manifest. Reload and enable extension. If extension is not working there're some errors unrelated to manifest version.

At some point I added a policy flag to the registry (not sure if that had any effect), if nothing helps you can try:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome]
"ExtensionManifestV2Availability"=dword:00000002

Just ran REGEDIT as an Admin, tried both Hexadecimal and Decimal options, restarted Chrome both times and it's still not working.

EDIT:

IT'S WORKING AGAIN!

I had missed one zero, specifically the very first one, upon the copy-paste process.

THANK YOU!

I honestly have no idea what combination from everything you suggested ended up solving the issue, but what I do know is that after following every single step you mentioned, it's working again.

Appreciate the help.

Newest Chrome version 141 doesn't support workaround anymore - my uBlock Origin got disabled and I couldn't get it back working. My solution was downloading older Chrome version and apply the fix already posted here.

That's also a good way to go about it.

I just followed @jm's instructions above and it's working again on Chrome.

For how long, though? That, I do not know, which is why I have already set up Opera with everything SteamGifts related, just in case.
