Yet another in a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long Smacks self to get off the broken record line of annoyingly nosy question I like to ask.
Which franchise do you like better, Elder Scrolls or Fallout?

I don't care which game per franchise you like best, IE- New Vegas or Skyrim. This is a topic over the franchises themselves, NOT the individual games.

Which franchise do you like better?

Elder Scrolls
Fallout
I haven't played either of these franchises

Well, there is one franchise that is a post-apocalyptic satire about the stupidity of the McCarthy era, spiced with tons of obscure pop culture references and a very large dose of sociological issues examining the questions on how humanity would try to rebuild their own civilisation.

And there is a franchise about a characterless hero busting out of prison to gather some random McGuffins to kill a largely unexplained and uninteresting evil entity, mostly because said entity somehow managed to completely invalidate and rewrite around 80% of the lore of the previous game (or the writers are dumber than a sack of dead monkeys and cannot even keep cohesion within their own world). But ooooh, look, another dungeon with lootz™ in it! (Or, in the case of Daggerfall, another 7000 dungeons.)

Of course, one can just go for both: Fallout 3 and 4 do not even try to pretend they are not just a simple reskin on the previous Elder Scrolls in every way. FO3 even has some actual demons in it. I was surprised one did not turn out to be a dragon.

Science fiction type settings tend to be more realistic and complex but you can whip up anything in fantasy (magic, gods etc.) and nobody complains about that.

There are good and complex stories about fantasies in old games like Baldur's Gate 2. Also TES 3 Morrowind had tons of lore and everything seemed connected and realistic somehow. But these days fantasy genre is used as an easy excuse for half-hearted scenarios :(

Fallout: New Vegas, or the old ones.

Fallout, because of the setting. You can find the ES's medieval fantasy setting in dozens of other franchises. Elder Scrolls is just... less unique.

I really enjoy both but Fallout has the more interesting world to explore in my opinion.

Skyrim and Elder scrolls Online are perfect games.
The older ones and all of fallout didn't keep me interested long.

Fallout by far but with Fallout 4 being quite bland imo, Elder scrolls is catching up.
If Fallout 5 doesn't buck the trend then its going to be close.

People seem to get stuck on the 'not the games, but the franchise' part of your question. Maybe another way to word it might help?

"Assuming increasing quality in subsequent games, which series would you prefer continued, if only one could?"

Fallout, hands down. I love every game in the series (I haven't played Fallout 4 or NV yet). At least, the games available on PC.

I enjoy both universes, but I prefer the post-apocalyptic genre.
