As the title says, Are you allowed to join giveaways for a game that you already own, but you don't have the Game of the Year version? So you own Borderlands, and you want the DLCs from the Game of the Year version, are you allowed to join it? Same goes for Company of Heroes: Gold, etc.

Indeed.

As a gifter I would be pissed off and refuse to gift

the "winner" as no right to a free game from another person despite that a 3rd party website says differently

Usually if it's not stated in the description that people that already own the core game do not enter, it's acceptable. Especially when it's a significant amount of DLC. Now, if you owned the core Borderlands and half of the DLC, that would be frowned upon.

Agreed, even though I really want to enter those Borderlands GOTY giveaways, I don't enter them because I just don't have the last DLC, if I entered a GOTY one and won i'd feel like crap.

The problem with Borderlands is that the complete DLC pack costs as much as the GOTY version. I don't have any of the DLC, but I avoid entering GOTY giveaways. Still, I wouldn't judge if you did.

Best not to try, seeing as you own the base game, the crux of the GOTY edition.

I'd say no unless the giver specifies that it's ok. It still falls under the rule "do not enter for games you already own".

the 4 DLC's of borderlands almost effectively doubles borderlands gameplay and the best weapons can only be found in claptrap and Knoxx. Not to mention a big nice level cap raise from Knoxx. Borderlands would be boring as hell without Knoxx's DLC, at least the extra level cap and the awesome guns. Then the circle of duty events.

Borderlands wasn't boring for me any of the 3 playthroughs I did before I got the DLC....

The person still has the base game, and therefore shouldn't enter. There is an option to buy the 4-DLC bundle on Steam, so if people wanted to gift the DLC to people who already had the base game, they would simply buy that and give it away.

The DLC bundle is the exact same price as the GOTY edition, so I personally would not look down on someone who entered just for the DLC. If it is someone who plans to actually play it through again and not just looking to collect, they will get just as much enjoyment out of it as someone who did not own the base game.

As long as they did not already own some of the DLC, and the gifter doesn't say that they're not allowed, I see no issue with them doing so when the DLC itself is so expensive.

I take the opposite view. Unless the gifter specifically notes that it is okay for those people to enter, they should not, because the rule still states don't enter for games you have. Until that rule is changed, it would be up to the gifter to decide whether those who own the game can still enter.

For Borderlands versus the GOTY edition? I'd say enter. Getting all the DLC is a pretty big thing.

Its an difficult question in my mind... I see it like this.

If the cost of the DLCs comes within 5-10 dollars of the price of the game of the year edition, as would be the case for a game like fallout, or borderlands, or Magica then yes, but for a game with one or two DLCs then I'd say no

Well I see it this way. let's say I own Magicka and try to go for the Magicka Pack that has Magicka + all the DlC. If I win it I could always re-giveaway the extra copy of Magicka and keep the DLC couldn't I? I mean that's what i'd do if I didn't need the Game itself and just the DLC.

No, you can't.

So if I was gifted the Pack It wouldn't give me a code to gift the extra copy of Magicka?

You only get extras in rare cases where the packs say specifically you will (such as the Valve Pack). Like right now, say I have Shogun 2 and I buy the Sega pack. I don't get an extra Shogun 2.

That's a shame. Guess I have to keep entering for Magicka DLCs seperate as peoplepost them then.

People have to stop thinking in terms of dollar and cents. Sure, it's the same difference in that regard. But try to remember why this site exists. It is built on kindness and trying to build a decent community. You're voiding part of someone's gift. Who cares about if it costs the same when not only are you doing that but also keeping the game from someone else that would've used that base game RPG that lasts for like 100 billion hours. It's a dick move, plain and simple. You're not going to get banned, but you're more or less undermining why the site exists in the first place. It's selfish.

Unless the person hosting the giveaway is cool with it, don't do it.

i would say. its ok to enter a giveaway of a pack, if you own less then 50% of the cost of that pack. but that's just my opinion. it would be nice, if there was a default rule for that on the site and the gifter might specify something different in the comment or go with the default one.
