You might have issues I think as older games will work with Dinput and 360 controllers have Xinput. I just recently had some trouble with an older game and my 36 wireless not working quite right (but sorta). In these kinds of cases you can use something like Xpadder to just map keyboard/mouse outputs to the controller.

Would a Logitech controller work? My barebones F310 has a switch at the back to shift between controller types.

Yea that should work fine. The switch is for choosing Dinput or Xinput.

You need to get yourself a program like Xpadder. The newer versions of the software require you to purchase it, and I guess 5.3 is the only free version available.

There is also Pinnacle Game Profiler, Joy2Key and MotionJoy (as well as others) but I have little/no experience with using them.

If you go out and get Xpadder 5.7 without paying, then you are pirating it.

The last freeware version is 5.3. Just one site you can get it
Xpadder v5.3 Freeware edition

If you are using Win 7 or 8 you need to set compatibility to Vista on the Xpadder executable, otherwise it works flawlessly, and isn't that different from the newer paid versions.

Eh, oh well. Like I said, I wasn't sure if it was another free version or not.

I had issues with getting 5.3 to run after building my new PC recently and moving to Windows 8 from XP. It would not work no matter what I did with it. After about an hour, I got tired of messing with it so I searched around for a version that would work for Windows 8 and I found the 5.7 version somewhere and it ended up working for me, so I've been using it since.

I'll edit my post above.

Need an older gamepad for those, or you need to use extra software.

Or any controller that uses DirectInput. A lot of them are still sold, and Logitech F310, F510 and F710 have a switch to change between XInput and DirectInput.
