Damn, that was short lived. Seems like they supported XP quite a lot longer.

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really. XP released in late 2001. XP mainstream support ended in early 2009. So it had ~7.5 years of support (+5 years of extended till this year).

Win 7 released in late 2009, so it's 6.5 years old early next year when support ends, only one year less.

Late 2009 to late 2014 is 5 years... so early next year will be roughly 5.5 years.

And damn, has Windows 7 really already been out that long? Feels like just yesterday.

Windows XP
RTM - August 24, 2001
General availability - October 25, 2001
End of mainstream support - April 14, 2009
End of extended support - April 8, 2014

Windows 7
RTM - July 22, 2009
General availability - October 22, 2009
End of mainstream support - January 13, 2015
End of extended support - January 14, 2020

Going by general availability to end of mainstream support, XP was 8 years, 6 months and 7 will be 5 years, 3 months - a substantially shorter period of time. However Windows Vista also had mainstream support for 5 years and 3 months and so will Windows 8, so it looks like that's a consistent time frame now.

It means it will still get security updates, just not big things like Service Packs. Just like XP did in its final ~5 years.

They don't add any new game to GFWL. I think they just let it on life support do the games that weren't patched could still run.

that's actually better . . . though after how bioshock 2 ran for me before they removed gfwl i'm certainly not buying anything that uses it. i was painfully ignoring the arkham games until they patched it out, which was fortunate because then i got them cheap through humble i think.

Yeah, I don't really want GFWL to really die - I have a few good games that use it and won't be patched (DiRT 2, for instance.)

It's funny you mention that. Bioshock 2 when it was given for free is what introduced me to GFWL. I played for about 3 or so hours only to find that you have to have an account to save but I had to quit the game to do everything. Uninstalled everything and in my dreams, I saw only beautiful fires lit across a flag that read 'GFWL'.

Okay, that last part is a lie, but it really did fuck me over.

Darn, I can't use Windows 8. I've tried, I can't work with an environment that can't be navigated with solely the keyboard.

Let's hope Windows 9 gets released before then.

... but you can navigate it with a keyboard?

I completely agree with you that it's an interface that's made for touch interfaces first and everything else second, but it still works with a keyboard. At least I've not seen any action that can't be done with a keyboard yet.

did you not try for more than a couple minutes? the latest 8.1 makes things a lot more sane, but even from the windows 8 preview releases i could do everything with just a keyboard. the only thing i can't do without some sort of pointing device is use the awful cisco vpn client to connect to work, but that has nothing to do with windows 8.

Well, I kind of had to help set up a laptop that was running 8.1

I couldn't figure out how to get a nice, searchable list of all programs installed, it took a while to figure out where and how to get to "My Computer", finding an actual Wi-Fi dialog with advanced options seemed confusing, and in general the whole "Charms menu" thing was confusing. Metro is pretty though.

I mean I think if I got used to it then it'd be fine, but it's not an interface that presents every possible option and advanced dialog at once, instead hiding them behind little swipes and generally trying it's hardest to look pretty rather than be useful.

For Instant Search: Windows Key, tab to the down arrow, enter, tab to search bar (instant, will find all installed software).

For 2nd Instant Search:Windows key, start typing the word (no need to click/tab to a dialog box), hit enter to start the search, pretty fast. (It'll also find the other things, like PC, Network, Recycle, etc)

While it may be different, that doesn't make it worse. It just seems that people really dislike change.

Also, a list: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/keyboard-shortcuts#keyboard-shortcuts=windows-8

Truthfully, as much as I don't care for the direction that Microsoft is going, I wouldn't mind giving Windows 8.1 a try. I just don't want to break the bank doing so.

Is there anywhere to get a full (not upgrade) legitimate copy of it for a reasonable price?

It will be fine up to 2020 and Windows 8 is fine, nothing at all wrong with it, its a tad faster then 7 so I can see some people that hate speed disliking it. Plays every game fine, runs every program fine, interface wise it is pretty alright and if you seriously can't stand because of that well....just use 7 till 2020, 9 will be out before you know it anyways.

To be honest, no point in waiting, just use this, it doesn't have any performance drain and I have not had it do anything funny or crash once in months of using it.

I just use ninite.com when installing a new OS and it has the option for it, nice way of installing essentials right off the bat without going batty.

"I'll still not believe it until we see it"
Same here, as other public briefings have stated that a few of the more multi-threaded things in DX12 rely on changes in the driver architecture that were introduced in Windows 8 kernel. So Windows 7 in the end may not see the biggest gains, but just maintaining compatibility is a pretty big deal in itself from the user perspective..

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

"rely on changes in the driver architecture"

some handy excuse, that too many will believe, if used. Let's not forget how Halo2 required Vista...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because Halo 2 required DirectX 10, which was only available for Vista. Which was the reason that the PC version did not sell. The Vista requirement also tanked the adoption rate for DX 10, which is why games now use 9 to support older systems an 11 for newer systems. It looks like MS is trying to learn from past mistakes at least. So fingers crossed that will actually happen.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

err.. no, Halo 2 did not require DX10 and was patchcracked for XP-compatability on release.

MS blatantly lied to sell their crap. And they still do now again.
