I bought a game on GamersGate that has a freaking SecuROM DRM. I have been trying to download it and I keep getting an error saying "that I ight not have the necessary permissions for the file to be executed". Also, Windows Defender and my Antivirus keep saying that the file might not be trustworthy. Anyone knows wtf is going on and how I could solve that? Thanks for the help <3

EVERYONE, THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP! I managed to make it work after I completely turned my antivirus off. I installed it as administrator and then turned the antivirus back on. Kept working afterwards!

Hi Spec, thanks for the help, but I don't have that option appearing there. There is nothing under attributes

In the properties, go to the Security tab. Select "Edit...", choose the "Users" group, then click the "Full Control" checkbox. Maybe that'll work?

The user already has Full Control enabled :(

I tried demo from https://www.aldorlea.org/onyx.php. I ran it in Windows Sandbox (feature in the latest Windows 10 update that allow to check things that you don't want to install in main system) - demo was OK.
Do executable have shield on icon? If yes, you need to Run as administrator. I think your issue related to User Account Control (UAC) settings - since official demo executable is not digitally signed (at least I don't see that tab in .exe file properties), that can cause warnings that system show to you.

It did and I tried running it and it still didn't work. I proceeded to deactivate my Antivirus and run it again as adm. Finally worked! <3

Weird, indeed.
You may want to test the exe with virustotal and, if it appears safe, launch it as administrator: I've read that it installs a system module, so maybe this is where your trouble is.
You can also check https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SecuROM and see if there is any conflicting things on your computer (virtual drives for example).
Not sure what to do with such old creepy DRM.

It does appear as safe after the analysis and I have tried to launch it as administrator. Still the same thing :(

According to PCGW, the one from GamersGate does have SecuROM DRM, while the one from Steam and others don't.

I did take a look at that website before making this thread but apparently there is no circumvention for Windows 10 :(. Do you think I should contact GamersGate

PS: it seems there are (hackish) ways of installing back the SecuROM driver on Windows 10:

https://github.com/ericwj/PsSecDrv

Basically this involves obtaining an older version of the secdrv.sys file, self-sign it and install it while disabling Windows' driver signature enforcement.

Otherwise, and I know this is controversial, but a cracked version of the game binary would solve this issue, as they usually bypass any DRM ;)

I have not tried it, but this is supposedly how to add support for SecuROM/SafeDisc back into windows 10:

  1. Download Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider tool from here.
  2. Download SECDRV.SYS file or copy it from any older version of Windows. In older versions of Windows this file can be located in C:\windows\system32\drivers folder.
  3. Move SECDRV.SYS file to C:\windows\system32\drivers folder on your Windows 10 computer.
  4. Right click Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider and choose Run as administrator.
  5. Choose Enable Test Mode and click Next.
  6. Select Sign a System File, navigate to C:\windows\system32\drivers and select SECDRV.SYS file.
  7. Click OK and restart your computer.
  8. When your computer restarts, start Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider again and turn on Test Mode. After you’ve done that, you should be able to run old games once again on Windows 10.

back in the day usually there were ways to remove that malware from your "backup games" but paying customers shouldn't bother with this mess.

product doesn't work, time to get a refund.

Onyx is an RPG Maker game. The Steam version comes with 'Onyx.rgss2a'. Does your SecuROM version as well, or have you not been able to get it installed even?

If you have 'Onyx.ini' and 'Onyx.rgss2a' then you should be able to substitute 'Onyx.exe' from a non-SecuROM protected RPG Maker game built using RPG Maker VX (another RPGM game with RGSS202E.dll and .rgss2a file, such as World's Dawn). You may be able to grab 'Game.exe' from the RPG Maker VX demo too.

I took 'Game.exe' from World's Dawn, renamed it to Onyx.exe, and it seemed to launch Onyx okay.

THIS ^^^^

RPG Maker is just using a generalized executable that reads the configured game file created in the RPG Maker app. Swap out the locked-down version of the RPG Maker exe with the generic one from any Steam RPG Maker game, rename it as velocity37 said, and you should be good to go.

Not sure why they'd bother with such an obsolete and intrusive DRM for a cheap RPG Maker game, but whatever floats their boat, I guess...
In any case, SecuROM does indeed work on newer versions of Windows, but the required workaround is less than optimal.

Honestly, I wouldn't even bother, when there's a solution that's way better: refund the purchase and rebuy the game from Steam (it's on sale until Monday), you'll get a 100% hassle-free game for less than half of the price (courtesy of regional pricing).

I don't think refunding is possible on GamersGate after you reveal the code :(

Anyway, I managed to make it work!

Thanks for the help <3

I did get it at the same price as it was on Steam for me tho, Gamersgate makes the price the same as Steam in your region iirc
