So it's happened to me finally. Someone ungratefully won a gift and decided to regift it to someone else or just win it for collection purposes. It kinda sucks; You try to do something out of the good of your heart and people want to take advantage of it.

So, how does one prevent these scum from winning?

Make group/private giveaways.

Even this alone doesn't help. I've taken doing group giveaways PLUS a $100 contribution limit ... which I'm debating whether to increase to $150 now.

maybe you can look for people that actually want games and directly give them the game you have

If someone didn't activate it, can you not quickly regift it to someone else? Or do you know that the key was used? If I sound completely off it's because I'm not sure how you can tell someone didnt activate it unless you are checking their library and it's not there? Please elaborate :)

I feel sorry for you.
Please contact support via ticket system. He will get a free suspension/ban.
Maybe group/private giveaway.
I was once contacted in PM by a friend who advised me to trade a SG won game. I had to explain him SG rules.
Not everyone takes the rules so seriously.
But Will you please give him a FREE suspension/ban ?

I know, actually there's a guy using a avatar of the game transformice, he's a actual leecher, never spent 0,01 to giveaway all games that he gave he got in giveaways and never played any game that he won. Take care he live here (forum) searching for private giveaways.

Transformice sucks now.
Used to be fun and now they have a shitty cash shop system, shitty custom maps that no one can solve get permed, and there's a shitload of idiot teenagers who bring crappy drama to every god damn room.

I thought you couldn't bid on games if you already had it in you Steam library? Or did the person not have the game and just passed it on to someone else?

Didn't have it, gifted it to someone else as a Christmas gift, they told me.

I've actually got a game that somebody won over a month ago, they marked it as received, but yet it's still sitting in my steam inventory. Sometimes wonder if they're ever going to take it...

If it looks like a trustworthy person, maybe let them know or they may later mark it as unreceived.

give it to him directly via steam , and tell him to activate it or else that you will report him if he didn`t . You can check his game list ( If private , ask him to make it public ) and check if the game is added to his list or not .

About him getting it for collecting only , thats cant be stopped . And yeah its suck , Trying to win something so hard and someone else won it and he dont care about the game .

Seeing how 3 of your giveaways ended within the last week, and they're all marked as received, I guess you're talking about one of those guys. I'd say give the winner a couple more days to actually add it. If you can spare the time, you could send them a reminder, although you certainly don't have to. There's certainly no valid excuse why they didn't add it to the library right away, but these days are kinda distracting (eg I forgot to exit an extra giveaway for a game I won, and I'm now trying to have it rerolled). Be festive and don't let it spoil your mood just yet. Happy holidays!!

Happened to me in one of my giveaways. Group giveaway, less than 15 entries, but the winner didn't activated it. He was suspended some time ago. But, what can you do? The gift has been activated by another guy... that feeling sucks.

My Kung Fu Strike DLC giveaway got me a response from the winner saying "I don't have the game, I'm not activating that key so you can keep it, haha"

I can't get a reroll. All contact with him is impossible. I actually want someone to get the fucking game!

Sorry to hear - definitely submit a support ticket with any evidence (though a quick look at his games list would probably be enough). Luckily I've not had anything like that happen to me (just a few ungrateful winners), but I tend to do private/contributor/group giveaways nowadays. Not had a single issue ever since.

Uh... There's nothing you can do to be 100% safe, but here are some tips:

  • Before you send the gift, check winner's SG and Steam profile. If it's private - this alone would raise my suspicions. Small amount of games (or only from bundles/+Team Fortress 2) and no playtime/barely any games played could lead me to assumption it's a dummy account. Check when he joined Steam - it's strange if he didn't play since creation of account, isn't it? Also trade ban and/or VAC ban is a strong suggestion you're dealing with dishonest person,
  • check if earlier winnings were redeemed. Also, are giveaways he created - if any - legit (especially if you made your giveaway for contributors, we don't want any boosters),
  • e-mails were created to send important stuff through them - like messages about viagra promos and cheap options to enlarge your penis. Do not send games this way, especially keys! Add the winner on Steam. If he doesn't respond - his loss, you can easly ask support for reroll. If he doesn't answer to your e-mail with key, third e-mail asking if he's going to add the game to library/mark it as received, another one with your desperate threats that you see him logging on Steam once in a while so he could finally write back... Well, it means two things. First - you're screwed and second, you're being screwed by a guy who received important e-mails in the past. But you should've noticed it by now yourself. Support does not reroll giveaways with keys sent via e-mail - no way to verify if it was used or not.
  • another argument to just adding people on Steam (even if it's Steam tradeable gift) is giving them conveniant chance to be nice and thank you - if they're dicks, they won't think about it anyway but some people might forget - hey, it's life, stuff happens and people sometimes use different nicknames in two places, at some point you don't remember who wanted to trade his Skyrim for your Fortix and who was that guy who helped you defend objective against all ods so you added him to play later again,
  • since you're already talking, you can remind him in a nice way about adding game to his account asap and marking it as received,
  • if you don't like playing detective every freaking time you want to share something, stick to creating group giveaways/chat giveaways for specific group(s)/contributor giveaways - there are still some assholes, but not as many.

3/4 of my first giveaways were traded away. Not even a single 'thanks' for their profit. In one cause I was just stupid, I noticed that guy is a Russian with VAC ban but I thought I shouldn't judge people on steorotypes and he can still be a nice person. Guess what, he wasn't. And if I checked his profile closer, I'd see he didn't redeem one of earlier winnings. But I was new and I didn't know I should act like Stasi.

Well, good luck in future.

All he said, I couldn't have worded it better.

Moreover if it's a key kindly remind him of activating it within the next minutes or you may drop it accidentaly in some chat or forum. This way he won't be able to trade it away.

I'll go and check all of my Giveaways now, don't really have anything better to do. I wouldn't have a problem with it, but it might be interesting to now.

Are people really checking up on people to see if they installed the game? That seems pretty crazy to me.

1 decade ago

Why is crazy? The rules are pretty clear on that. Actually it takes a few seconds to load up their steam profile type the game's name and see if they have it installed.

You really want me to give ideas to the scammers out there don't you? lol
Anyway, just one example: Someone redeems the keys in a second account, exceeds the required worth in Steam games (100$) easily and freely, enters here twice in a giveaway (even repeats the whole process with more accounts).
Also, check Mindestens's post previously in this thread.

Still you don't give a damn? Think about it twice...

It's unfortunate, but I am grateful for all 4 of my current victories with the giveaways here. The only one that took a fair amount of time to deal with was my last one and the person had sent it to the wrong email {I checked every day, five times a day for a solid week after it said I won}. After I contacted him, we got it all sorted out. Anyone who regifts an item, should be banned! Gwar!
