(Heh, I wrote books three times, maybe that means HL3 is confirmed).

Anyway, recommend me some books. I ask for them to NOT be "popular" because there's a chance I already read them and I'm trying to find some good new things. Yes, already did A Song of Ice and Fire, TLoTR and House of Leaves (my brain is still recovering).
Anything but romance, really.

Oh! And while we're at that, who's your favorite author and why?

Mine has to be Stephen King, his style is so raw sometimes and I really love his horror (though my favorite book from him is The Green Mile, 100% recommended). And while he IS my favorite author I consider Gabriel García Márquez to be far superior and someone you must read at least once a year to breathe.

And for your children: Cornelia Funke's Dragon Rider.

George R.R. Martin. Not for the ASOIAF series, which is fantastic, but because of the sci-fi he wrote long before then. Really exceptional. A must-read for lovers of classic science fiction.

Like futuristic stuff? Time travel, giant robots, outer space, planets, resurrection, AIs, and more?

Take a look at Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos. Best hard scifi I've ever read. Even better than Asimov's. The last two books are the best, IMHO.

If you like indie stuff, try Steve Vera's Drynn books. Cheap on amazon, and pretty entertaining. The author is a cool guy as well.

What a defining space opera! While I do respect the series and gave it a shot I found it way too dry.

Have you ever read any Peter Straub's writings? The only book wrote by him that I'd read is Koko; a gritty mystery novel. But he mostly writes horror. So if you really love horror I recommend you pick up some of his books, Hell, even Koko which is not a horror novel is quite horrifying.

And uh I don't have any favourite author as yet. I'm still quite a newb in this reading business.

Clive Barker, sex, horror and excellent world building/story telling. Second choice is Jack Vance, even better world building, great story and every interesting descriptions of social behaviour/customs

Terry Pratchett is my all time favorite. The Discworld series is an absolute delight. Humorous, packed with interesting characters and always able to keep me turning the pages long after I should have been in bed asleep. XD I know he's always been a popular writer in the UK, but I always seem to have trouble finding people who know him despite this fact... Also you can really pick up anywhere, despite them all taking place in the same world and, in some cases, with the same characters. I STILL haven't read the first two books of the series. I started with Going Postal and my favorites are probably Reaper Man, Night Watch and Small Gods.

Well, according to the christian church, those who did were directly inspired by god, and god is Jesus as well, so practically Jesus wrote it :D

William Faulkner is my favorite author, I don't really know why, maybe it's the subtle racism in southern culture or maybe it was the fact he was a whiskey drinking drunk southerner. The stories are really great in their uses of time and prose, but not to hard to understand. A bit dry at times, which I hate, but for him it just freaking works. Start with As I Lay Dying then progress further if so inclined.

I've also heard great things about Iian Banks (sp?) and his culture series (scifi)

"All Quiet on the Western Front" and its sequel "The Road Back" by Erich Maria Remarque, some of the best books about war. Don't know if it's hipster enough.

"Torture the Artist" by Joey Goebel(i think...i'd google it but my internet connection sucks so i'll let you do that)is one of my favorite modern books.
I'm not sure how popular he is though...at least not outside of my country :)
Edit: Don't you think you overestimate yourself by saying " I ask for them to NOT be "popular" because there's a chance I already read them"?
I'm pretty sure i could list here at least a few thousands of popular books and i bet you didn't read them.
"Popular" doesn't start with Harry Potter and ends with The Hunger Games, you know?

I'm actually sorry for my choice of words, tried to say something among the lines of "books that weren't easy to find" or something like that. English is not my first languaje and couldn't find a better word at the moment :(. Anyways, thanks for your recommendation! I didn't really like THG, don't know why.

Shannara by Terry Brooks < one of my favourite epic fantasy series. It's closer to Lotr than to GoT. They're producing a tv show that follows the story of one of the first novels - so it may become popular any day now. Or not.

Friday's Child by Georgette Heyer. < My favourite book. A parody of the Regency period (technically romance, but it's a parody.) This book is pure, barmy, ridiculous unadulterated fun.

Legend of the Sun Knight by Yu Wo < a Taiwanese fantasy series that takes place in a rpg-like world - largely satire, as well. The author's allowed the fans to translate it and they've done a great job. Here's the link.
