So is it like a chat or a file sharing service? I don't really get what makes it different from other existing tools besides the supposed security. I've made some group projects in college with a convination of google drive, dropbox and whatapp, I'd be interested in this if it had any advantage but I'm not seeing it and in my experience using the tool most people are familiar with beats using the technically superior one.

My understanding is that it combines chat, file sharing, and task management. Just having these integrated is already a huge benefit, but having it secure is something that I place a high value on. There are also some innovations to make it easier to distribute tasks when you have a large number of participants in your group, such as tags based on skill sets and automatic notification for people who have the skills required for a particular todo item. [UPDATED GIVEAWAY LINKS]
I'm not sure if anyone has heard about this, but I'm pretty excited about Barrett Brown's Pursuance Project.
It's basically a tool for collaborating with people to engage in activism, investigations, non-profit activities, etc., and to do so in a secure, encrypted format. It looks like it will be another great tool to combine ideas from Matrix/Riot (similar to discord, but with encryption, if you're not familiar with it), Telegram, Tor, Mattermost, Trello, things like that. I think that it could be a wonderful way to coordinate with people and distribute tasks, which is always a big barrier to making progress when working with communities.
You can read more details about the project here: https://pursuanceproject.org/
And here is the kickstarter for the project: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/85883596/barrett-browns-pursuance-project
And here are some giveaways, of course:
