Hey SG people.

I've been trying to use steamdb.info to figure out region locks... and I think I might be getting somewhere, but I wonder if I might be missing something.

I'm looking at two games at the moment -- Gotham Knights and Persona 5 Royal.

  • For Gotham Knights, I don't see any indication of region locks.

  • For Persona 5 Royal, it seems like there are a couple of region locks, but if I buy a key from the USA, I should get a key that can be activated anywhere.

Am I on the right track?

And is there anything else I can look at to figure out region locks?

I appreciate any and all help with this!

Of course there's a giveaway!

I'm sorry, I don't have an answer... I just couldn't resist the chance to reference that Monty Python scene.

The best I can say is, as far as I know, the store that sells the key to you should provide that info. If you say what store you're shopping in, maybe someone can specifically say where that store puts the info.

If you want to be sure, ask the shop beforehand, which sub their key will activate and if it has any kind of region restrictions if it's not shown on the storepage. There's always the (low) chance, that there is a sub not yet known to SteamDB. And with Persona 5 you could for example also get this sub, since it "only" excludes a few asian countries.

Here's the German POV. Depending on your location YMMV.

I notice that the mentioned items are not for sale in Russia. Are you sure they can be activated there?

Sorry for the rows :) The stores I looked up say at least the games can be activated in Russia.

It helps with scrolling :)
I was in between not being activated in Russia or simply not showing their pages on Steam. I've activated quite a few games that no longer have a page, but I wasn't sure about the first one. Anyway, thanks for the clarification.

Gotham Knights is a perfect example of what I'm really trying to figure out.

Do the stores actually know what they're talking about??

If I am reading it right, steamdb says there are no region-locked packages for Gotham Knights. Which means all keys should activate everywhere.

But you found a store that lists a ton of region restrictions.

So what's the truth? This is pretty much why I made this thread. :)

Is there somewhere to see that Russian lock? Steamdb doesn't seem to mention anything. Does that mean if I gave away the game and the winner was in Russia, they couldn't activate it?

If you look at prices on SteamDB, there is no price for Russia, which usually means the game is not available there. But you're right, usually region- and run-locks are more clear on SteamDB.

Some stores tell you only the game can or can't be activated in your country which they derive from your IP - end of story. This isn't very helpful if you want to gift a game of course.

Currently I'm looking at GreenManGaming. Sometimes they just say "activates in your region;" sometimes they actually list regions where the key can be activated.

However... I think Humble is the best example of a bigger issue -- stores sometimes do not seem to know what they're talking about. Think about the Humble Choice -- it is very common for Humble to list a bunch of region restrictions but then it turns out that there are no region-locked packages listed on steamdb.info.

That thread is helpful, thanks!

Ultimately you guys sort of got to the same place where I am now --

Can we trust the region locks mentioned by vendors, if steamdb does not list any separate region-specific packages?

I feel like the region locks listed by vendors are just made up because they all list different things, but I don't think they are getting special keys with different region locks. Maybe they have just as much trouble figuring out the region locks as we do and they are getting it wrong too.
