Interestingly enough, the word meme was coined in 1976 by Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene. It both has little and so much to do with what people call memes nowadays, it's worth checking out. (The pic / quote is from Metal Gear Rising, that makes a great point at how cultural and experienced memes form our personality and worldview.)
