Hey,

So I've had this "Dead Island: Epidemic" Steam Gift in my inventory for a long time now. I got it while activating the key for Dead Island. I think the game was already cancelled when I got it, so I never bothered to activate it. I've noticed it now says: "Unknown package 45183" instead of "Dead Island: Epidemic" or whatever it was before. Does anyone know what will happen if I do try to activate it to my account now? And does anyone that owns "Dead Island: Epidemic" tell me if you can still install/play it? Or does it just do nothing?

Update: I guess you can't redeem it any more. When I try to add it to my library it says I already own it, which I don't.

The servers have shut down, nobody can play it, but you can still redeem it on your account.

Had so much fun in that game few years ago, too bad it shut down.

It's likely that you already own it. F2P licenses don't appear on your library.

Try using this command on your browser
steam://install/222900

I have 6 (2 different kinds) of this game's licences in my inventory :)

I rarely install F2P licenses and I'm 100% sure I didn't install this one or ever played it. But thanks for the suggestion :)

As of the library redesign almost all free license do in fact show in your library.l

Only the ones you had at some point added, right?
I haven't seen it add any free game I hadn't installed at some point.

Any that your account holds a license for whether installed or not.

Ah, well I never added it, and the "steam://install/222900" command doesn't install it either, so it must be a way for Steam to disable adding gifts that no longer exist I suppose.

Hmm tried your command but it doesn't do anything except open Steam.

Whats the difference between "package 38198" and "package 42665"?

According to steamdb not much. 38198 grants 6 gifts, 42665 only 4. Also 42665's gifts can be deleted, 38198's cannot.

you can redeem it, I think it also adds +1 to your total game count, atleast that is what someone told me who tried it out.

However, it is is pretty much worthless. There is always someone who claims this has "collector value" and trys to trade / sell it to a newbie.
In my years on Steam I NEVER saw any proof what so ever, not even a slight hint to any form of evidence that this game gift has any sort of actual value, aside from the +1.

I would add it just for the collection value, because I own the other Dead Island games but Steam won't let me. It claims the game is already in my library, while it certainly is not.

Right. I mean, there's "collection value" if the game can be played or even if it just drops trading cards, but that's decidedly it.
If you've got a game that can't be played and doesn't provide any other benefits unique to itself [eg, unique Steam badges] then, no, there's definitely no "collection value".

The only- and still rather iffy- exception to this would be if you're planning on making an account filled with absolutely nothing but removed titles, just for an eventual "lawl, look at my library" screenshot. That's.. kinda collection value based, even if it's in the vein of "look at my collection of canine excretion events" or "I ate nothing but pudding for 8 months, look at my body now!"
