A trader who approached me had no ST rep and a pageful of fake +rep (from users random letters and numbers for usernames with ? avatars saying just about the same thing-not like the usual good trader +rep but rather similar specific things that are worded and ordered strangely). The user joined in January of this year and has a few crates and keys in the TF2 inventory. He/she/it deleted all of the fake rep after I declined to trade with him/her/it. Should I even risk dealing with this person at all? Or is he/she/it part of a network of shady scammer alts as I've presumed? I'm really new at the trading scene, so thanks for the guidance.

That sounds pretty sketch, but what do I know?

hey mew, i think if you feel something is sketchy, it is better to not risk it. you dont lose anything by not trading and another opportunity will eventually come along.

Run the hell away, but not before reporting him. :D If your gut says something's fishy, listen to it :)

You are not supposed to report just because you think the person might be a scammer. Thats like the CoD kids that report you for hacking just because you managed to kill them once with a headshot.

"It's now a scientifically verified fact that post-pubescent men simply cannot possess the aptitude to headshot any virtual entity in a video game, representing a human or otherwise, without software assistance. The data clearly illustrates that they simply lack the reflexes, genital mass, and correct sexual orientation to do so." (69Deathkill3r69, 2013).

Thanks Captain Obvious, I totally didn't know that after having been a fairly active trader for about two years. I report people who use fake trade rep, like, you know, the person the OP was dealing with?

I'm still wondering how you got me falsely reporting scammers out of that - where in my first post did I say I was reporting him for scamming? XD

I did not say that you had reported anyone either. But you are the one telling Mew2 to report this person, without even having seen his profile.

if it seems not legit, walk away, trust your instincts
I have been trading way to many years(under different usernames, as the older names I got bored of)

of the approx 200 deals I walked away from because they seemed shady.. 3 were legit.

Probably a big hint is what the trade offer was. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Haven't you learned from your previous scam?

So, the answer is:

NO

Hah, I thought you'd be more seasoned than just 3 weeks. Yes, beware of all new accounts. Beware of old accounts. Always question, always doubt. If you have their 64 bit url they can be monitored.

I wouldn't go anywhere near that trade. Even if you're not at risk of getting scammed directly (i.e. the trade is entirely within the trade window), given the profile you described I think there's a strong chance the items you'd be trading for were scammed from someone else, in which case (a) there's a chance they get revoked when the original owner complains to Steam, and (b) you might be helping a scammer profit from and ditch stolen goods, which is kind of a crappy feeling, imo.

What is the deal?

The fact that even after realising all their rep was fake, you're still considering trading with them, leads me to believe you should never trade.

all steam rep IS exactly fake, forever.

Using Steam trading there's no risk. If you get a game and the guy does a chargeback you can get the items back writing a message to Steam Support (and he will get a nice Trade Ban).

Anyway, if you don't trust the guy I'm not sure why are you asking for advice in the first place.

Rule of thumb. If the person you are going to trade with makes you uncomfortable, don't trade with them at all. If it's a direct trade via steam trade window then there is no getting scammed.
