I was pretty amazed by Monsters Loves You. FTL have pause option and Sword of the Stars: The Pit could be paused too. Sound is in both not that important though both have very nice audio... so it's shame to play in them with muted speakers.

Go Home Dinosaurs does in fact have the ability to disalbe fullscreen. It's right in the settings?
Also, don't forget Fortix and Fortix 2, which should be SFW ;)

Fortixes are super cool - probably the best rate playability/price... but don't you find hard to get back to this level of concentration after pausing? I was eaten by lame bats multiple times :(

The only problem is that final fight is very absorbing so it can lead to the bad situation when you shout on your manager that you need to end that fight :)

Portal 1 and 2 = Even with coop the games are pretty short, you will spend a good 30 hours on ALL of them combined at most. But it's really great, you should try it if you haven't.
Puzzle Quest 2 = It's basically a bejeweled with RPG. The fights are bejeweled style, like you match gems to add up to the requirement of the spell for you to be able to cast and stuff. So you have some progress to look at.

Not really pause but there is no time limit between turns so you can just leave the game and come back.
I dont think you can save mid battle. Nonetheless, you can save before and after a fight, so if you really had to get out of the pc you will lose only one battle progress.
It's a pretty great game if you're into casual.. but not too casual games.

As in topic - what's in your oppinion good safe (and by safe I mean also no nudity and no extreme violence) game?
Should have:
Pause abbility;
Ability to disable fullscreen (sorry Go Home Dinosaurs);
Not important sound effects (goodbye shooters :( );
Achievements could be bonus giving you feeling of finishing at something.
