Just like the rest of computers in the world, in the end, they use components manufactured by others - graphics card, sound card, wi-fi card, etc. In cases like this you must look for drives outside your laptop's brand website.

I'm quite sure if you upgraded to W10 everything would be ok, because it's basically the same as W7/W8.

And if I'm not mistaken drivers are backward compatible between W7 - W8 - W10.

Just yesterday I upgraded an older computer from W8 to W10, and guess what, I didn't have to upgrade any single driver, everything was working straight out of the box, Just new windows version. Windows 10 upgrade has an option, "keep my user settings and programs". which I used.

That potentially will cause issues but note I have W10 installed on a 9 year old laptop that doesn't support W10 and as far as I can remember only 1 application didn't work (and I can't remember what that was now so it can't have been that important). Admittedly I don't use it for gaming but that is because the hardware simply isn't up to the job, which is why I upgraded to a PC last year.

I can't remember which application didn't work on my laptop - its over 6 months since I did the upgrade. Other than that my laptop works reasonably OK with W10 - although I do fancy it works slower than it did with W8/Vista (the two other OSs I used on it)

I do have an old webcam what I tried to use on my gaming W10 PC but couldn't get working. I didn't really spend any time looking into it as it was probably 10+ years old and at some time when it becomes necessary I'll just buy a new one.

Sorry, but I didn't see your message until now.

I already upgraded my laptop once when W10 released (in august I think ?) and I had a lot of trouble. Half of the hardware on my Laptop like Wifi, DvD drive etc stopped working (apparently because there was no drivers or they weren't compatible) That is when I contacted Lenovo support and they told me the model wasn't supported and even directed me to a post on their forums where they listed all the models they advise not to upgrade (which ofc in my hurry, never bothered to check or find out).

Eventually, I had to take my Laptop to the service center as my recovery disc was missing and Windows couldn't roll back properly.

EDIT: Not to mention the constant BSOD.

The device drivers is precisely what I was overlooking. It was completely escaping me how a system wouldn't cut it since the system requirements alone have been below industry build standards for years and years. I do know that some device driver updates have been either non-existent or complete failures with Win 10 so now that makes total sense... thanks for your input guys. It would seem I was overlooking the obvious (not that this is a first time for that by a long shot!)

i would also say that we should accept that MS can't support every old technology forever. if you play old DX5 games on a regular basis, i am sure there are ways to do that on every modern OS (for example a VM with WinXP or 7). it's the same for all DOS games. you can't run them on any 64-bit Windows, so you have to use DosBox. that doesn't make Win7 x64 a bad OS. ;)

Nah, it's because they want to forcefully put users on Win10, so they will be able to shove tons of ads down your throats ; ) They already put ad-containing code in start menu and lock screen, noone knows where else they will want to put it.

Also they want to make shitload of money just as Apple is making, by allowing users to install apps from their shop. And binding playing on PC to buying apps only in MS store will be worst thing ever. They can't do it right now, but if Win10 will have dominant position on the market (just as WIn 7 have now) they will be able to do this, forcing people to buy "certified" apps from their shops (just as they're selling Rise of the Tomb Raider right now).

People are still sitting on WIndows Vista, 7, 8.1 and NOONE should FORCE them to upgrade their OS, by the means of including Windows 10 as important security patch. If it's their decision - sure, give them opportunity. But don't force them to do anything against their will.

Ads on lock screen, ads in start menu. The fact that we can turn them off now doesn't mean that when WIn10 will be on most of PC M$ won't just roll out another update which will force people to look at them. "OMG, don't bitch around, we have given you FREE OS! Stop whining, it's our price of your ability to use it".

And really? They FORCE people to update their OS by giving it as safety update. Have they done this with WinXP=>Win Vista, Win Vista=>Win7, WIn7=>WIn8? NOPE. It was people choice to go and buy upgrade to newer OS. Not M$ corpo bullshit.

It's not safety upgrade, it's installation of new OS. Really small number of people are aware of it and will hide this update. Or will be able to roll back to previous OS. Majority of people - elderly people, kids, and some of adults (yeah, I'm only one in my whole fmaily who can do a full format and OS installation) don't know that they can install adblock to get rid of ads, or that they can manually remove past windows safe points to get extra space on theirs HDD. So for people like this, this forced update will mean sticking with Win10 forever, as you can roll back in a one-month window of time.

You just don't see whole picture, you just look at you and your friends from "computer era" and think that it's obvious to everyone that they can do something natural for you with their PCs. But they can't, that's why M$ pulled out this shit - to get advantage of all those people, who have problems with more advanced funcions of OS than opening up a web browser or running Steam to play in CS:GO.

Apple is close to non-existent in my country, but I still don't agree with their policy about forced upgrades, apps only from their store, lately they were bricking phones "in the accident" if they were repaired in non-authorized by Apple repair centers.

And well Apple doesn't have monopoly on mobile market. It's Android that has got majority of the market and Google doesn't force people to upgrade their phones (for obvious reasons). So people deliberately choose to use apple products. They can't do the same with OS, as most of proffessional firmware works only on WIndows - Photoshop, AutoCad, heck even programs which are managing my lab equipment runs only on Windows. So people doesn't have a choice in a matter of using OS (unless you want to only use web browser and write simple texts - linux will do). That's why they doesn't agree with MS policy.

Wait, you mean your lab runs Windows natively on those computers and not as a VM?
I mean, okay, my old uni did this too, but because the computers were old as hell and couldn't handle virtualisation. But otherwise, I more often see a Linux distro running VirtualBox, and running Windows there.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't see the point in running WIndows 7 as virtualisation, having Linux beneath it, if it's computer with i3 and 4gb of RAM, without access to the internet, and is used to operate one simple program xD

Apart from that - well yeah, our law of competitive tendering more or less force our public agencies to buy pre-made PCs, and PCs from Dell and so on always come with preinstalled Windows on main HDD. So noone can change anything as it'd be violation of license.

If you can tell me - what's the point of running WIndows as virtualisation on Linux? I know about safety measures of running virtualisation, but anything other?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Safety and stability. Linux rarely crashes (some distros practically never unless you actively fuck something up on them), and on virtualisation it is easier to configure failover for client crashes. Added bonus is that more modern CPUs support virtualisation natively now through Intel or AMD specific instruction sets, so there is zero loss of performance in the client OS.

Well, depends on how nitpicking you are. Linux is in reality just a kernel, not an OS, the distros are built upon a certain version of this kernel. Officially "the" Linux OS is called GNU/Linux to get some distinction. Still, this strange naming leads to some confusion even in the official documentation.

If the sole purpose is to run a single application, that Windows probably does not crash. And even if it crashed, what would be the benefit of having any kind of "bulletproof" Linux underneath, which did not? You would have to restart Windows anyway.
And if there are some special hardware and its drivers involved, virtualization can make things super-complicated.

The client can instantly reload a snapshot and have a working system running in seconds again. Worst case, an installation can be the same way too. True, you can use a similar method over LAN, where you just copy the same snapshot of the OS to the computer to have it ready fast, but VMs tend to be faster as they don't need copying beforehand.
And I guess there have to be other benefits. I see system engineers use this method all the time, and not just in software labs but on live sites as well.

How did you come up with that conclusion?Who said i had friends?

I never even claimed or said everyone should or does know how to use a pc beyond turning it on and playing games and surfing the web,but you are also leaving out the part of,how many do not care if the OS auto updates or not,how many only care that they can use Windows and that it works?Any any case what does that have to do with if they are being forced or not?I mean after all if you are being forced no matter how much knowledge you have of said PC your going to have to upgrade,as being forced means no way out.

And i asked about these ads you mentioned so i am not even sure why you brought up the upgrade thing.

Also i never claimed that nothing was being sneaked it or what not,i was merely asking about these ads you claim they have slipped in as i have not seen any,nor have any of my friends ever mentioned ads.

All i was asking is where are they?I never said it did not happen in fact he could have slipped the code in in case he decides to post ads,but my question was where are the ads not about the what ifs and maybes of what said code could do.

You said they did it to place ads,and i have yet to see any so i am wondering where these ads are you claim they slipped in?

Then say i do not see the whole picture..when all i asked you about was the stinking ad part lol

Seems to me the only picture that matters is the one you painted for everyone else.

That's the DRMs' fault though, and both, along with Tagés, have been notorious of not working on any system properly.
I understand that it sucks, but this is an issue you have to take to the manufacturer of those DRMs, because they are much more dangerous than anything Win10 is accused of.
(Also, sadly, this is what we went through when WinXP dropped proper MS-DOS support, so until DOSbox came, we pretty much couldn't play old games.)

10 no longer allows low level access for DRM that uses those...but from what i gathered there is a way to still play them on 10 but you have to know how to self sign your own drivers.

In short there is no easy way to do it on 10

But older OS it is easier to work around, but for 10 the only thing i can think of is a crack,as much as i hate to say it.

In some cases you might get lucky and a roll back or update to a different version will remove said DRM.I would say your best bet and safest would be to buy a copy of Windows 7 if you do not have one and dual boot it with 10 to play older games,

Other wise it re-purchase the ones you can or use cracks...

This is the reason i am against any DRM for crap like this, same with Denuvo will it be removed if that ever becomes defunct? Also check GOG.

Sorry that you have so many games bought in that format.

Well you can keep on holding off as long as you do not want DirectX 12 games or full support anyhow.

Or games that on Windows 10 only, but i do not think you are rushing to use there store, giving if you holding out on 10 you have reasons for it,so i do not see that as a reason you would upgrade lol.

I mean i suppose the only thing thing that could maybe sway you is if a publisher made the games for Windows 10 even if on Steam, but i doubt that.

I only upgraded as i wanted it while it was free so i do not need to pay later if i needed it,And over all i like it better then 8 and i like it enough and it is a lot like 7 that i can deal with it,but i also like it takes less resources and allows a little more ram for gaming, might not be a huge deal but everything little bit counts.

Also i must add...
Windows 10 at its core is pretty much the same as Windows 7 so pretty much any game that works on them should work on this or if is still on Steam and being supported would have been patched by now.Which i think a couple had some minor issues with 10 when it launched and was patched shortly after.

If it does fail to play a game i am pretty sure compatibility mode would take care of that...

Also note not all games that used those DRM will fail to run,it is how the DRM itself was used that makes the difference,so go ahead and try the games.

In short if it ran on windows 7 it should work on 10 ..as long as it did not use stupid Securom or SafeDisc and even then they may still work depending on how they where implemented into the OS

“Everything that ran in Windows 7 should also run in Windows 10. There are just two silly exceptions: antivirus software and stuff that’s deeply embedded into the system needs updating – but the developers are on it already – and then there are old games on CD-Rom that have DRM. This DRM stuff is also deeply embedded in your system, and that’s where Windows 10 says “sorry, we cannot allow that, because that would be a possible loophole for computer viruses.” That’s why there are a couple of games from 2003-2008 with Securom, etc. that simply don’t run without a no-CD patch or some such. We can just not support that if it’s a possible danger for our users. There are a couple of patches from developers already, and there is stuff like GOG where you’ll find versions of those games that work.”

I thoroughly dislike Microsoft, from their business philosophy to their software. I still use their products. I hate that Apple has become everything that Microsoft is. but I still use their products.

It's lack of choice. In the end, as much as I grumble about it, I want to use their products because, well, I love modern technology, from smart phones to computers to gaming systems and more. If the choice is to accept the terms of the technogiants, or live like a caveman, I'll accept the terms. And in the end, so will you (probably)

Well, then, maybe use smartphones with other OS? Same goes with PCs.

I mean, yeah, I see your point, but picturing it as 'go with them or be caveman' is a big exaggerogation. People actually have choice but they prefer things to be simple, and most of them dislike changes. If more people would just stop at some point, and decide to not upgrade at some point, this companies would realize that something is wrong and they have to change.

Win10 is planned to be like OS X, so there won't be any new Windows editions, and support will totally be dropped for anything older. So sticking to Win7 after a while will be like sticking to MS-DOS after Win9x went on the market. You can do it, but the rest of the world will go past you.

XP when it came out was bad. Resource-intensive, totally redesigned UI and control panel, compatibility issues up the ass, performance ranging from great to borderline unusable. WinXP started to look almost like an OS at SP1, went great at SP2. Many, many people were still using Win98SE even in 2004, but XP eventually became the dominant force around that year, more than 3 years after release.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It runs the upgrade installer. This has the benefit of allowing your system to always take advantage of the free version of Windows 10.
Then you can roll-back to Windows 7 or 8 by 'uninstalling' Windows 10, or restore from a system backup.

My experiences with W10 have been fairly bad, so I'll probably nab the free license but stay on 7 until it's officially EOL.

Permalink

My experience is that once you upgrade, you got to spend about an hour mucking around with the system to get it into shape. After that it works fine.

  1. W10 doesn't improve quality of life - it's got plenty of compatibility problems. The fact that DX12 doesn't work on W7 and W8 is not due to technical problems, it's a marketing move - there are no software or hardware limitations that prevent DX12 from working on OS from Vista up.
  2. Spyware is not "advancing technology".
  3. "If it's free - you're the product". Remember.

We can't accept what is happening right now. Ownership is being taken away, we're constantly spied on, "1984" is becoming a reality, one step at a time.

They don't. They have a non-genuine activated OS. You still need to crack Win10 to pass the genuine check. I have tried this on several VMs using torrented Win7 and Win8.1 images, and they all failed the check after upgrading to Win10.

You can click "turn off", but you don't know if there is anything going out, and if so, what is going out.

The version of W7 I currently have shouldn't have spyware. Which is yet another reason to refuse "upgrading" to W10.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What makes you think that microsoft doesn't spy on windows 7. Every windows collects data on usage of its software, also, its not like microsoft is taking your photos and videos or other super secret documents and selling them on the black market. You are far better monitorized and have more of your data collected by owning a smartphone (even without linking accounts on it)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

W7 is much older. Whatever it's sending, it's spyware is less advanced than W10's, and sends less data than what W10 collects. Also, W7 doesn't grant Microsoft control over what is installed on my PC, as opposed to W10, which enables Microsoft to remotely delete and uninstall stuff from your computer, regardless of your settings.

Sure, but let's say Quantum Break hits the stores. A pirated version goes out as well. They identify the most popular pirate releases, and send a small patch out. Said patch will be able to remove all instances of identified pirated Quantum Break from everyone's PC, no need to do it individually.

On W10, this is possible. On W8 and earlier, it isn't. Read up.

More or less. The free upgrade version ties itself to the hardware in use when it was installed. MS has to date not stated what would happen if major components are changed (motherboard, CPU for example).
