Hi! I created an account for a new subscription and humble is asking for my phone number first time ever. Is this a new thing? Somebody else meet this before?

I'm guessing they are trying to put an end to the multiple accounts. You can get 22458 emails but phone numbers are trickier.

but phone numbers are trickier.

You can get free [functional] phone numbers pretty easily through various services, though..
So this really only hinders those who stop at the first hurdle.
But I guess some hindrance is better than none, for these kind of things..?

Though it really feels as though nearly all of Humble's multi-accounting/resale issues would be resolved if they just coordinated with publishers to make keys expire after a reasonable, but not overly lengthy duration (with clear prior indication of when said point would be). So all their other (not overly effective) antics just feel unnecessarily consumer-unfriendly, even before considering how bizarrely cutthroat the frequently quoted account locking e-mails are.

Functional phone numbers to get texts and such, sure but not if they ask you to install an authenticator on your phone.

I thought it was more a case of people constantly opening new accounts to use new user discounts and refer discounts but you may be right

You'd just use android emulators [on your PC] for that, no?
That's already how people get non-smart-phones to work with authentication apps (ie, in conjunction with emulators).
Nevermind being able to link an android tablet to a phone number, and work something out that way.

There might potentially be other ways around that if you're willing to root your phone, as well.

I'm sure there are more ways than that and you can also go around and borrow the phone number of everyone you know, more simply, but yeah at some point, it's becoming labor intensive for people who just want a couple of bucks on a bundle without making a full time occupation out of it, which is, I suspect what they are trying to slow down ;)

~.^

My point was less to question function, and more the direction and efficiency. As I noted, it seemed like there were better ways for Humble to approach the matter than, well, any of the reputation-reducing actions they've been taking the past couple of years. :S

If they'd take such action after a better framework was in place, then perhaps there'd be less reason to be questioning the matter. Though those quoted support messages would still leave a lot to be critical about, of course. Which is a real pity, given how great my own (rather un-recent) support interactions had been in the past.

Well, with that first reply, I was mostly just going in with the intention to note (without any associated insinuations) that "trickier" wasn't an outright barrier, so there's been a bit of a topical tangent since that. ^.^

I totally get it. They just use canned solutions sold to them by "experts", is my guess.
I just like to learn new things though, so thanks for the tangent ;)

Do they ask for it also when you select "sign in through gmail" as opposed to creating a "humble" account?

It's interesting that you write about creating a second account to get the, cheaper, new customer prices (So Multiaccounting + cheating with breaking the HB TOS) and that not much react in a "bad way" on it.

What is there to be suprised about?

Water is wet; Food is nutritious and a considerable portion of SteamGift users are not to be trusted. Not that surprising on a site dedicated to getting free stuff.
