Hi,

Nowadays I started to receieve friend invittaions from people with private profile.
I wondered what they want and accepted but no one ever talked to me?

Do yu know what are they trying to do by doing that?

Thank you all for your answers.

Some people are trying to make new friends while others are scam accounts.

I tend to lean towards the scammers in that respect. I research ALL my random invites.

Yep, same here.

If the profile is private or a low level I usually turn the invite down. Unless they have someone in common with my groups or friends. Then I debate.

Haha yeah also same here, and if I decide to confirm the ad I do expect them to say something right away. If not I delete again :p

Adds Prince when they get home. Waits 4 hours to say something. Wonders why the invite was deleted.

CRAP!

That happens a lot actually, they add you and then they go offline.

Some people are trying to make new friends so as to scam them while others are scam accounts

Fixed. :P

On a more serious note- if you don't know who the person is, and they don't have the respect to contact you first through whatever medium they found you on, then even in the rare circumstance where they're not a scammer, their attitude makes it clear that they're not worth your time. For anyone who actually finds you for the first time through Steam, they're indulging in a weird level of boredom or eccentricity which probably also won't be worth your time to deal with (or perhaps they confused your account with someone else's).

Of course, when using trading or giveaways sites, you should always first confirm it isn't someone from those sites with a game for you; otherwise, when you can't easily figure out who the add is, it's best to just leave it be. If you play certain online multiplayer games through Steam, you may want to check that it isn't a user you had a fun match with in an online game.

Past those scenarios.. in attempting to discern why someone would want to accept a random add, I am only left bewildered. :X

That's so true, the more groups the higher the chance of random invites from private/trade banned/VAC banned/Game banned Steam users.

You have fancy profile with fancy futured games ... people try their luck i guess .

Dont accept any invites from private profile imo ... no worth the risk .
You may accidentaly click on some of the shit they PM you as soon as you accept the invite and get yourself some nasty trojan shit

Bots from groups you are in, scammers etc.

Normally I get them from reviews I do, my profile in general with the theme and level, being active on SG ETC

You can use SteamRep to check if they have a scammers tag but just block them to be safe and sure. :O

the larger someones tradeable inventory is, the more random invites you get.. the less tradables the better in those regards.

someone wants all your cards/boosters. :P

I stopped getting random invites when Steam implemented limited accounts.

I get so many unexpected adds: public, private, obvious impersonators, tagged scammers, you name it. At one point, there was an exploit that only required you to visit a profile to end up infected, so I mostly gave up on sorting through them and started a Steam group for people to send me messages. It's also why I don't enter giveaways here, I'd probably ignore or block someone trying to give me a game I won, and that would be incredibly rude.

  • Private account add me with weird name
  • Accept it
  • Sudden message about something and some link included
  • Remove friend
  • Block
  • Repeat

All of them give the exact same chat to me, i've block like 20+ of them now...
I wonder how can he get that many bots...

Bot invites probably. Most of them have or had the name [unassigned] or a really strange name (starting with a "u", I think) or pretending to be trading site owners/bots. The others are either bots or people searching for friends or impersonators or other kind of scammers, etc. :P
