I've been pottering away on the site, just winning a game here or there, but becoming increasingly discontent with the fact that I wasn't contributing more. So, recently I decided to go on a giveaway surge to give back to the community. Well, let me tell you, giving away things is addictive. This is not going to have a good impact on my wallet...

This wasn't at all helped by the fact that due to a temporary glitch I was granted access to see what it would be like at Level 3 for a few hours. I peered into the heart of the universe and this is what I saw: <view the attached image>

The glitch resolved itself within hours, but I am well on my way back to Level 2 (in fact, as soon as an already completed giveaway is received, I'll be Level 2 again immediately), and heading for Level 3. From there, I hope to make a quick rise to Level 4 even!

It was a hard slog to get started. Due to a mistake in my early days (I accidentally submitted a giveaway as invite only, then deleted it immediately with 0 entries before resubmitting) I had only 2 giveaway slots. Very frustrating, and limited what I could do, but I got through it.

Because I've won a few games over the past year or so, I really wanted to reward those who have been giving away a lot of games, as well as those who have given away at least some games. Not including the games I'm giving away right now, I've given away games at Level 0 to Level 6, with the majority being at level 1. I've been steadily increasing the level requirements for some of the giveaways, partially to ensure that those who have given away the most get rewarded, and partially to see where the interest peters out. I want a good number of people to be interested in the games I'm giving away and have a chance of winning them. The higher the level, the fewer the people have the opportunity. The fact that the games are all rated quite positively and have been bundled before means that there are likely to be a lot of people who own them already, further limiting interest.

Well, I fear that I may have hit that limit. I have 3 giveaways for The Whispered World Special Edition 1 each at levels 7, 8, and 9 which have been running for over 6 hours and they currently have 6, 2, and 1 entries respectively.

Please don't let my giveaways languish into oblivion! If you qualify for these higher levels and are interested in the game, or know someone who does and is, please check them out here: (Note: Giveaways finished.)
Level 7+
Level 8+
Level 9+

Additionally, I also have a Level 1+ giveaway of The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav running for everyone else.

As to the title? Digging too deep... Yes, well, that has several meanings:

  • I've opened Pandora's Box, I've felt the giveaway drug in my veins, it may be too late for me and my wallet, I have to give away more.
  • I've seen what it's like in the depths below me, I now hear the call urging me to return. Distant, moaning, ever beckoning me down deeper...
  • I'm hoping that with my most recent high level giveaways, I haven't restricted them so much that very few people notice them and enter. I'd like to do something special for Level 10 contributors, but if there's not enough interest, that may need to wait.

Good luck everyone! I hope some of these giveaways are of interest to people, and I hope the winners enjoy the games.

EDIT: Giveaways have finished now.

I feel like the dwarves in the city under the Misty Mountains which is now known as Moria, the Black Pit. I've dug too deep and unearthed a monster which cannot be contained and will consume me.

Just remember to take breaks from time to time, the second favorite thing for dwarves is beer, after all.

Keep this in mind: we're all casual gifters.

And polls should always include a potato option. (No, other fruits or vegetables won't cut it.)

With just under 2 hours to go, the stats look like this:
Level 7+ 13 entries
Level 8+ 4 entries
Level 9+ 2 entries

They're all public giveaways, so it doesn't matter for CV calculation, but I'd like to see those higher level ones get at least 5 entries each. More would be even better!

Bundled game that was really widely available. Those entry numbers are expected.

Yeah, I agree (on all counts). That's why I'm trying to give it a bit of a boost here. I think I crossed the line going from Level 6 to Level 7. Level 6 was quite successful for a bundled game, Level 7 not so much.

I did an experiment with a similar game, Nightmares from the Deep 3. Made giveaways from level 0 to level 10, fully public, no forum advertisement.
Level 5: few dozen
Level 6: under 50
Level 7: 12
Level 8: 4
Level 9: 4 (plus one entry by mistake)
Level 10: 4
So yes, same. Level 6 is the last level where it may be worth to do a bundle game drop.

Thank you, that's quite good information to have. Apparently the gratitude tax around here is potatoes, but I'm used to paying in kittens, so... have a potato cat.

Just under 1 hour remaining now, and the stats look like this:
Level 7+ 16 18 entries
Level 8+ 6 entries
Level 9+ 2 entries

Level 7 and 8 have budged a bit, but Level 9 is staying firm at only 2. Will it make it?

Less than 15 minutes to go and the amount of entries hasn't changed. Doesn't look like they'll budge much, if at all, in the dying minutes... :(

Final stats:
Level 7+ 19 entries
Level 8+ 7 entries
Level 9+ 2 entries

Congratulations to all the winners!

Well, at least no CV was lost, and you also experienced the interest in bundle games over levels. ^__^

Well, that's in my opinion a very high level requirement for this game.
To get to this level you have to give away A LOT except you are giving away some expensive non bundled games.
I guess you won't get much more entries xD"

I think you're right. They do have too high a level requirement. It's a pity that I can't lower the level requirements to allow more people to enter without deleting the entire giveaway (which I don't want to do, not fair to those who entered already).

Did you know that if you give more than 5 copies from a particular game, you'll get less CV for each additional copy you gave? Just a warning since this will be your 5th The Whispered World giveaway (Edit: and also your 5th The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav). Good luck with the entries though, we all have to start somewhere! :)

Thanks for the information! That works out perfectly, as I only bought 5 of each, thinking it a nice round number. I then ran into the limit of only being able to give away 2 games in total at any one time originally, so that's why I had to give them all away individually.

Whispered World was a nice game to play - it was the first game I played with english subtitles (to understand something) but with german voicelines (to practice it). It made my head hurt (I'm not native for either language) :D

Yeah, it looks nice and like it would be good to play (I haven't played it myself) with mostly positive reviews overall (that's why I chose it).

That sounds like a really good way to help you learn a language. Did it work?

It wasn't much on its own, as it's relatively short, but as Daedalic is german, it's a perfect source of authentical, proper german speech - at least getting used to hearing it can help a lot. It's just weird, I forgot the feeling when I was learning English when I was a kid - I was playing Arcanum and such, and while it excruciating, I pushed myself through the game while translating from a dictionary. Trying to play something in german gave the cringy-unpleasant feeling of " I don't understand most of it uuugh, but I have to go on" that's pretty beneficial in my opinion. I just got way too used to English, and how I can understand almost everything. Language (re)learning doesn't really work in the comfort zone. (After it I tried Bioshock Infinite in German after playing in English - I had to stop for other reasons, but I still plan to continue with the learning :D It would be good to get back to the level I have papers for)

Holy sugar, 6.98! Sooo so close. How did you lose the 0.02? Did a game you gave away go down in price (and which one, if you know)?

Or just got a temporary boost from the usual Daedalic games bug.

Mh i was 6.96 or so before giving out transistors, which is not daedalic. I guess one of the games lost a few points

Wow, that was a delight to read. Always nice to see someone giving back.

Considering the amount of people who are at a really high level, and the fact that high level people are pickier and own lots of games, I certainly expected to see so few entries.

Thank you very much for the link to the stats!

Yeah, I expected it to be quite low as well, I just wish it hadn't been this low. Between my results and talgaby's, I think Level 6 is about as high as you can go for a bundled game and still get a decent number of entries.
