Thanks again, and just to remember: This is my first game, lol. Don't get that much high expectations!

(Also, special thx to IncoherentLight for the tweak on Lovecraft's quote. You're in the credits!)

ÏA ÏA CTHULHU FHTAGN

Previous giveway (ended Sept 17)

Hey there sgifters!
A couple of months ago I developed my first mobile game. Yes, it's another flappy bird clone (hey, you gotta start somewhere, right?), but since I'm a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft's works, why not throw a tiny Cthulhu in it?

If you're a developer (or want start something like that), feel free to use this thread to discuss, get advice, make friends, whatever. Maybe you find someone to help you with your projects, or get into one. I'm a digital designer myself, all the assets were created in Aseprite and the sound effects are from freesound.org.

My tiny game was developed for Android devices (sorry Apple users, I have no dough to get an iMac and an iPhone). The first version was developed in Android Studio (Java+LibGDX) but in v1.3 I moved on to Game Maker Studio Pro. I could stay in Android Studio, but right now my focus is in computer games, so why not start with Game Maker on a mobile project to get the grasp of it? I'm always adding content to the game so there's an update every 3-4 weeks.

Anyways, thx for listening. Here's the link to Cthulhu Wings on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.deflango.cthulhuwings

Also, as a big thanks for reading this so far, here's a few giveaways. I'm not a big fan of trains, so I'll just post the links here. All all lvl2+ because reasons.

EDIT

The giveaways ended a few days ago, but since people keep on giving me feedback here, I thought it was better to edit the title so people won't think I'm bumping this to get installs or so.

Guess I'll have to make a new batch of giveways to thank you guys!

Cheers!

I've dabbled with Unity before and am currently working on a simple platformer as a gift. I think my main issue is planning. I planned a whole bunch of stuff and kept to it, and when I was happy I started putting it all together. Then at every step I realised I could do something more interesting or more practical and then have to go back and change everything. Unity is super handy though, and I do really enjoy solving all the problems I cause for myself. Maybe I ought to take myself to university and study this stuff for real.

Congrats on publishing something, must be an awesome feeling!

yeah, I can relate to that :) I did played around with unity back in v4 (actually, I have 2 games released in Unity, but I only did the assets) and it's a great engine as well. I moved on to Game Maker because my focus are in 2d games and you really don't need that much power to create 2d games (even if you do can develop those in Unity).

I've been working on a desktop game project for the last 2 months, and every time I think I get the mechanics right I realize there's more I can throw in. My solution was to start listing everything on a white board and what goes on the first mockup, what goes on the next mockup, and so on. I'm still at least 6 months away of getting a first version of this game and already going crazy here.

I don't think you NEED to get into computer science college or so (of course, it helps a lot) to get started. There's a lot of good tutorials around (x10 bad ones too) but it's a matter of sorting things out and do it step by step.

Like I said in the OP, this thread is also for making contacts. If you need help, feel free to add me and we can think of something! (this applies for everyone here!)

I'd mostly go for a change of employment, I think anything in IT would suit me fine, but I'd like a chance to learn a whole bunch of information and then apply it, rather than learning what I need as I go. That way I'd hopefully be able to be a bit more creative with ideas and solutions.

Also most of the tutorials I can find are videos, and while they are useful (the Unity team's tuts are really informative, no fluff), but with written tutorials or lectures/written work you have the time to let your mind wander around the idea and think about what kind of projects you'd use things for.

My whiteboard is covered in little tasks I can do in the morning before work, and my notebook is brimming with level design and bigger ideas. Also many doodles, many many doodles.

Thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind. Best of luck with your games! :)

That would be cool, if want to add a note on an About box or credits page in the future. Speaking of which, a credit scroll is probably another good feature to practice with - royalty-free music is available for free that only asks that you provide credit, and it's a tradition to provide credit to backers of crowdfunded games. Credit screens, done as title cards or scrolls, can also add a bit of cinematic style to a game, and can be a place to use artwork or behind the scenes material that didn't make it into the game (even animations that got cut). None of it's core to game development, but it helps round out a game, make it a more finished product, meet obligations and say thanks.

actullay, that's a good point. I just realized I completely forgot to credit the sound assets. will fix this in the next update, in a day or two.

hey, thx for the feedback! anyway, I know it's not a big deal, but aside serving as a lab for me (I keep updating stuff and understanding more how to play with the engine), it's meant to be something you play when you have to wait for a bus or something like that. But I dare you to get over 61 (my personal best so far).
