Yet another worthless suggestion by yours truly.

I was wondering about the reason behind the removal of the "Last" page navigation on threads exceeding 100 pages of comments and replies. I can't see a logical explanation why this would be necessary, or mostly - I don't understand why this "Last" button can't just link to /search?page=99999. The only con to this solution is that the page title (in the tab, etc) will say "Thread Title - Page 99,999". In my opinion though, that doesn't seem like a bid deal compared to losing the "Last" navigation button entirely, but even so, could it be somehow edited to just say "Last page" when you use this button to reach the last page instead?

I just feel like this is one major issue with the forum that should be considered updating if possible. Was the "Last" feature simply removed because it's the easiest solution, although not the best? If it's absolutely not possible for one reason or another, then nevermind. It would just be a nice feature to have. :P

Performance issue, if I remember correctly. Don't quote me on that though.

I see. This is also the main reason we are not able to gift "free" games iirc.

Peformance issue? Really? How would such a thing affect performance? Maybe if a couple thousand people clicked it in a short amount of time, but that doesn't really sound likely...

I honestly have no idea how that performance stuff works, so I can't tell you for sure.

Clearly has something to do with the number of characters being displayed? Must be an oversight of not expecting a thread to ever reach over 99 pages.

It was not an oversight. There existed one, if I recall correctly, cg just removed it. Can't remember why.

For the Giveaways list, yes. It was a performance thing.

But "Last" is (mostly) still here for the forums.

I can of course be wrong, but I doubt it is an oversight as it was already mentioned shortly after the SGv2 launch (when one of the Giveback, Not alone etc. thread hit the 99 pages). So, he probably already knows.

While we're doing suggestions for improving navigation of threads... For the love of all that is holy, duplicate the page links on both top and bottom of the page. It's so ridiculously annoying to have to scroll to the bottom of the page when you have to repeatedly click through them, like when you have a specific page you need to go to, etc. That has been a staple feature of pretty much any and all forums I've ever frequented except this one.

^This. There was a script that was doing exactly that. I think it's name was Pagination or something.

EDIT: This one, in case you are interested.

I feel like I should clarify that I mean the actual top of the page. This one adds page links to the top of the comments, but I'd rather see them at the actual very top of the page. Sometimes the OPs are so long that it's still faster just to hit the end key to go to the very bottom of the page rather than have to scroll through the OP. lol

Yeah, I do end & home page navigation too. But it can still be really annoying and waste a fair chunk of time when you have to get to like page 25 of a thread that is 45 pages long so you have to repeatedly do the same thing over and over. Adding an extra step to that makes the navigation even more irritating. If I was going to request what I'd really like, it'd be to have the page links have an open text entry page jump at the end the way some forums do so if you know the exact page you need you can type it in and go to that exact page. But I feel like that might be asking for more work than is strictly necessary especially since people can just manually do that with the address bar if they know how anyway (adding "search?page=25" to get to page 25).

I don't want to ask for any real effort from CG here, but I feel like putting the top links back can't really be a real issue. If I'm wrong I'm perfectly willing to withdraw the request, but it seems to me that should be barely more than a copy & paste with slight tweaks. It's just somewhat frustrating sometimes that it was removed.

I agree...I'd also like to know if it's possible to add a search box to see pages other than "1,2, next". I thought SG 1.0 had that; you could click the ellipses (...) and type in a number.

Was the "Last" feature simply removed because it's the easiest solution, although not the best?

I honestly can't recall if last existed on forum threads to begin with, given how few past threads ever made it to that point.
That said, it presumably would have been removed back when because at the time it would have used the same system all the other 'last' checks did- of directly checking the database and pulling additional information. This was removed as part of cg's attempts to improve site performance.

While forum threads do have a redirect-to-last-page element, presumably the reason they don't have a "Last" that ties into that function is just because it never was added at any point [say, after the performance pass]. So it seems more likely to be oversight than deliberate decision.
That said, seeing as you still have to manually edit the URL to go to any other (previous) pages past 100, it still doesn't do much to correct the fact that the thread is still dysfunctional overall. Likewise, it's worth noting such threads are pretty aberrant, and not really a normal usage of the site- it's unlikely cg is going to put in much work to correct the matter given that it's so easy to just remake threads (as has been the current approach to them when they break 100).

25 top level comments over 100 pages is 2500 comments. I have seen some forums just locking off threads that reach 1000 post. I don't think 2500 top level comments is unreasonable restriction if it can ease the burden on site.

cg's master plan appears to be "let people create scripts for most of the basic / every-other-forum-does-this stuff that the site doesn't do itself."
