Are you able to access the GFWL interface by pressing the "Home" button?

If you're able to access the interface, see if you are able to do this:

1. Press ”Create a New Account“
2. Scroll down through the User Agreement
3. Select "Create a Local Profile"

A screenshot or more elaborate description of your problem with the game would be helpful in figuring out a way to get through it.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that GFWL will be up until July 1?

You can create an Offline account to save your game.
If i'm not mistaken you do it by creating an account, scroll down and select somewhere in the wall of text the option for an offline account.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I stumbled over DS Prepare To Die Edition at $4.5 Amazon, Steam key but I fear the game won't be patched.

That aside, Dark Souls itself is unplayable on the PC without some modding.

In that case something will happen to save game files like Batman Arkham Asylum, i'd recommend to wait until July 2014 to start Dark Souls.

It's a guide for GTA 4 and it worked for me ( on gta 4) but it will probably work on Dark Souls too. Sorry don't know how to do clicky.

I agree on not using the GFWL version that is included with Dark Souls.

First, uninstall all GFWL programs currently on your PC.

Click on Games For Windows Live Client - Microsoft download and install the latest client version.

Then try to start Dark Souls and see what happens.
