Suggestion: Allow free games to be given away, but don't give the creator CV for the giveaway

Take Limbo for example. It was given away free a while back, but maybe some people missed out on that and still want to win the game. You could create a giveaway for the free game, and before making the giveaway an alert could say "Warning: This game was previously free, you will not receive CV for this giveaway." That way there's no confusion on why the creator's level didn't go up, and the winner of the game can still be happy that they won a game they wanted.

Of course you could just give someone a key and get the same result, but it's not as organized as making a giveaway on here and having the winner be randomly picked for you.

People would abuse of the system and make alternate accounts to get a lot of copies of the freebies and rise their CV.

No, that's not fair. If you get a game for free then give it away, you shouldn't get anything out of it. If you paid for the game, sorry but you shouldn't get CV for it because it gives the people who didn't pay for it an unfair advantage.

Why not needed? I think it is a great idea. I would love to have a chance to win Limbo for example. There are a lot of games you cannot get for free anymore but they also can't be given away here.

I, for one, would really like to see this. However, I see a few problems which the site owners might not want to face:

  • Site load. With the number of giveaways of free games on top of regular giveaways, this could cause the server to slow down and/or require more expensive resources.
  • People not reading the warning then complaining that they got no CV for a game which they paid for.
  • What do you do with giveaways from people who gave the game away between it going free and before the site knew it was free. Delete them or allow them to complete with no CV (and no warning that they'd get no CV)?

The site could limit the amount of giveaways you can make for a free game. So if there's say 100 giveaways that have been created for Limbo the site will tell you that enough giveaways have been created for this game and prevent anyone from creating more until that number goes down.

There should also be a separate FREE category so it doesn't clutter up the main page and a link to a list of all the free games that have been given.

This was already suggested many times, it won't happen. Even if it was made that you don't get CV for freebies your "Gifts Sent" counter would go up. That way people could improve their ratio for free. It would just take too much work to redesign the giveaway system in a way where giving freebies would be fair and wouldn't annoy people.

There are key dump threads for this sort of thing.
Post on one, announce you have a key, and pick someone who replies, if you really want to make a GA out of it.
The giveaway system on SG is to make sure things are fair and reward someone when giving away games that cost something.
