Terraria feels aimless, and relies a bit too much on grinding and multiplayer (which can possibly make grinding, and any kind of progression flat out worthless in itself) to reach the end content. Starbound was more or less the same a year ago, but the new update drew me in. It was a good pre-order for once, you don't get a lot of these nowadays.
It's just that, they should really let me sell my collected crap already...

With this new stable update Starbound just released I have to go with it. It's a really interesting game.

Terraria all the way. Especially with the upcoming 1.3 version it's going to kick ass even more (and will be available on GNU/Linux finally!)
You can also compare them on Steam Charts:

Terraria has 2x more people playing in the last month, with Starbound being picked up only in the last few days (was there an update or something?), while Terraria maintains a stable and larger playerbase (10k/day in Terraria vs ~3k/day in Starbound). Numbers do not lie :-).

You should consider that the new update in Starbound was released about a week ago and the most players didn't play before because they knew that the update comes soon. Another reason for the few players before the update is that the previous stable update was in April so there weren't many reasons to play it that long as there was a point at which there was nearly nothing to do but build at that time. The average players this week are about 25k/day.

Well, if we compare to the winter update we should also consider the upcoming 1.3 update for Terraria. But even if we don't, it's Terraria. Always. Forever.

Played the shit out of both. The starbound update blows my mind.

I played only Terraria and loved it but starbound is like an improved version of Terraria.

It's a really close call, but I think Starbound takes it because it has more content. Haven't played since the Upbeat Giraffe update, but more content is always good!

You should wait for terraria's 1.3 just like starbound's winter.

As someone who's played both, Starbound.
The only problem is that last I played while there is a lot of content currently there a lot is still unfinished.
In spite of the unfinishedness, the fact that I can play as Mayan Space Birds, Cannibal Plant People, Ethereal Cowboys, and Medieval Robots just makes me very happy.

What game do you prefer and why?
Note: It would be the best if you would compare the 1.0 winter update of Starbound with Terraria.
