Steam Web browser is technically Chromium but it doesn't have extension support, Valve probably disabled it. However I haven't see any ads on Youtube inside Steam. Can you give me an example from a game's community page where you get ads, want to test if I will get as well.

Same here, never got any ads by watching videos from Steam

he means when loading youtube pages inside the steam browser via the in-game overlay. most youtube videos have ads, but i don't think they all do so maybe you've just gotten lucky so far.

I haven't tested that, I might see if I get ads through the Steam overlay next time I play

Thank you, well i been in a position so far not to use too many walkthroughs inside the steam client (when i do i usually look them up straight in a normal browser and thus get them blocked).
I am just making a written walkthrough for this game (and have to make a review for the curator group) and thus i looked up a few hints.
Guess i have to live with what it is, apparently in America the tv channels also have constant commercials, guess we are lucky here (not that i watch that much tv).

No problem. I think your best bet is adblocking over VPN, something like ProtonVPN, NordVPN etc (Not so sure if they would block Youtube though). There is also Adguard for this, but it's not free as well.
It seems switching between the browser is still the easiest one. Also good luck with the guide.

Well i got a new Kaspersky license with VPN (Why do software companies add all this unnecessary extra stuff and become suites)?
But instead of increasing my current license they see this as a whole new product, while i had half a year left on my old Kaspersky license, and basically i had to guess and they are like it's your problem we can't help you.
I never tried installing it yet, but might be worth it to try it someday, i mean the license is already activated and running anyway.
Thank you, luckily it's a short game, also sadly a very easy game (not what i expected considering their previous 2 games) with very obvious puzzles
Really hope the curator can get a copy of https://store.steampowered.com/app/2664930/The_Adventures_of_The_Black_Hawk/ else i will for sure just buy it. Seems to be an old fashioned lucasarts style and 12 hours long..
Most people make video walkthroughs, but i prefer written ones, it's easier to look things up, and so do others, but there is always the risk that someone else is also working on one.

Note that not every VPN have adblocking, no idea about Kaspesky's though. If it's additional to your license you might wanna give it a go. For some reason, big companies like bloat.
I also like written guides, video guides are hard to follow and waste time while you can easily find what you look in a written guide.

Heh, nice art style, it does look very nostalgic.

Normally they sold a package as kaspersky total internet security, for 3-4 years and i just got such a license each year.
This year they changed their software and it's name, and added VPN apparently and requires a whole different license.
Yeah, Nero used to be just about burning cd's/dvd's.
I grown up with them, and always been my favorite gnre, my first pc game was actually larry 1 and my parents even allowed me to play it when i was 13 (not that you saw much).
If you didn't know about this thread, i like to keep a good eye on what's to come. ;) But Black Hawk was surely one of the most eager ones.
https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/456yO/new-retro-looking-point-and-click-adventures-each-upcoming-month-d-62
The genre has been dead on occasion, and i am glad the last few years it's picking up again, unfortunately some devs do tend to make their game rather short (like 2-4 hours).
I have spoken to some point and click adventure devs too and how they actually really struggle to make good money out of it, and most even see it as a hobby, because most young kids want flashy graphics and this genre mostly attracts the older people.
But with 50000+ games on steam, for any game it's really hard to get noticed these days.

So it's a different license but comes in a bundle but it's not optional? Seems weird to be honest.
my first pc game was actually larry 1 and my parents even allowed me to play it when i was 13 (not that you saw much).
Haha, were they aware of what kind of game it is? :)
Yeah, I check the thread time to time. There are some interesting games there. Though I agree, they mostly appeal to older people. Kinda sad but there is not much to do about it.

I am looking at it more, i thought kaspersky premium would be the new name and being a totally different updated program (like kaspersky total security was also called different several years ago), but it seems to be more of a subscription thing, like office 365 versus office 2021?
https://www.kaspersky.com/total-security#compare-table So the left column is what i used to have for years, and now i seem to bought a license for the right column, seemingly getting a lot of extra's, but if you get it from them, you automatically get your money withdrawn each year (but i bought a 1 year license from a key seller store). But the keys aren't working together with each.
Then i got screwed over by the key seller (who shifted the blame on kaspersky) for not stating the differences and it's a totally different thing, still weird as kaspersky security should be the underlying engine on both programs.
Yeah, my dad was first on a search to see which would be better an IBM PC or Macintosh, and we went for a PC, then a friend of my parents came with Larry 1, he showed it to us, explained the game, and from there on i could pick it up myself.
I used to watch a lot of english cartoons, and by printing out walkthroughs and playing sierra/lucasarts games is how i learned english, and also the only thing in school i never had to learn for to get good grades (also the only thing i got good grades for).
But that was still when you had no volume button, so it would drive my mom crazy at times. :P Until later my techy uncle put in a volume switch.
That same uncle was part of a BBS and basically every 3 months he had new games, so it was always christmas (and no we did not get it for free, we still had to pay).
Oh and offcourse no internet, and you had to keep trying no matter how stuck you were, or wait months for a game magazine to come up with hints or walkthroughs, now it's so easy to look it up.
It's sad that's it not a favorite genre, but atleast it's still alive and the past is never gone, those games will always remain and sometimes a nice nostalgia to load them up again.
Yeah, sometimes i thought about making games myself, but i am not good with graphics at all, and i think it just takes a lot of time when i sometimes don't even find time on a day to play a game, and seriously even when you got nothing important to do, when you wake up, get your cups of tea and coffee, do some administrative work, perhaps some groceries and it's already 14:00-15:00, and perhaps the older you get the harder times sometimes seem to fly by.
Not to mention if your game got all sorts of bugs, and you got no idea on how to fix those (i think that happened with a lot of devs, usually the ones that don't respond on the discussion boards, but one mistake i made is that i always thought devs would get notified about things posted on the board, but they don't, so therefor some unwillingly forget about it).

Ahh, another company that switched to subscription-based. That's a shame. Is that key seller legit? Somehow it seemed to me like someone generated a compatible key and sold it, because if the company doesn't offer only 1 year-long licenses, the key one could be an illegal workaround. Of course I'm just wildly guessing, have no real idea.
when you had no volume button
Haha, I don't know those dark times. It's funny to think even some simple things needed time to be developed. Today we don't even notice those things.
Heh, that uncle was a business man. :P
Well, sometimes I do miss the times when I only had one game to play at a time. Mine was consoles though SEGA. When you have that much time with one game, you would write your own walkthroughs, exploit bugs, even speedruns (though I don't like them anymore). :)
It's sad that's it not a favorite genre
That's probably won't change. But I think it's possible that those games would be more attractive when today's kids got older.
You don't always need graphics to make good games. I mean, look at this, it's just ASCII art and it was very fun to play. Maybe you can try something like that.
I understand those devs that it can be tiring to look at bugs here and there, but ignoring them is not a good habit. Debugging is a part of this process and there is no programming without debugging. (Unless you are a Goat Simulator dev.)

Yes, that site is totally legit, it's not from where you get games and microsoft keys for 20 cents, no you really pay about 20 euro, and that worked absolutely fine for 3-4 years, i even shared a 3 device subscription with my dad when i still lived at home. I am guessing they are getting them from companies, leftovers or what they called OEM copies.
But Kaspersky always said 1 year granted, and when you still had days left, it first used up those remaining days and then your next year was used, and i thought that would be the same case again, but i was wrong this time.
Oh, i been through it all, starting with EGA and then you needed VGA, Pentium, Voodoo Card, and then Quake came where you needed 4mb! of memory, the coming of cd's, storing and loading data on dat tapes (that was so slow), copying floppies with kids on the school yard, fun times though.
The only thing (thankfully) i missed was the 56kbps modem with annoying beep, that was still too expensive here, and we started with ISDN (which was also still expensive even so i unknowningly costed my dad 500 euro extra for 1 month).
My uncle originally was a butcher, he even pirated games on the Commodore 64 through connecting 2 computers with a wire and later on floppies (the big ones) he also sold computers at home, later he fully went into IT.
Oh yes, graphics alone don't make a game, and i know about Sanctuary but i am not a fan of roguelike (bit allergic to it even) i am like why play some part over and over again like watching and living groundhog day.
There is also this, i was one of the first who bought it and i kept in contact with the dev and he said he had some problems but promised the other episodes would come, but it never happened: https://store.steampowered.com/app/975290/The_Pepper_Prince_Episode_1__Red_Hot_Chili_Wedding/
These i don't have, but also look interesting:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1113220/ASCIIDENT/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1878770/ASCIILL/
Yes, but also devs that use one of those game making programs, and know zero probably about real coding and how to fix their issues. And those $50 junk games are a good example of them.

Hmm, OEM copies sounds reasonable. Though since they switched to subscription-based, it's more likely that there won't be any OEM copies anymore, or they would be something like a trial version (with 3 months subscription tops). It works for companies but I wonder how many of their users will fold and stop using them.
I barely saw the times of floppy disks and don't really know the times before VGA, though consoles worked on analog, not sure if it was before or after. I would loved to have a PC in 90s.
Interesting career change but it's all about doing what you love, nowadays most people's dreams die before they actually start doing things, your uncle was kinda lucky I guess.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/975290/The_Pepper_Prince_Episode_1__Red_Hot_Chili_Wedding/
This actually looks like something I would enjoy. I hope the dev finish it someday. Apparently they stopped at chapter 2.
Those other two look like they've been made in Unity, they look too flashy for my taste but the one with minesweeper style play looks fun.
Yeah, that happens with the devs without a programming background, but they really should learn debugging before starting to make games, it would make things even easier for them however a lot of them like to skip steps.
Well, I wouldn't expect anything from those $50 garbages. In the end they don't make them for people to play.

I have no interest in apple stuff, and haven't had a tablet for over 6 years, i had a nice archos one with joysticks, until it fell on the floor.
Never found such a replacement, although i got a steamdeck, but why play on a small screen when you got a decent pc?
And money, i already had to toss out my malwarebytes subscription and usenet.

Does the free option not work? I use the free option on Android to block the ads on games. I tried the free one for windows but it blocked the complete stream I tried it on, but it might work better for yt.
Wanted to check if it might work better than ublock on the browser, but since it didn't work for my purpose I uninstalled it.

technically it's possible (support for extensions), and apparently valve has shared their "changes" made to the CEF version embedded in steam client (though that looks quite outdated):
https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Chromium_Embedded_Framework
I tried to poke around in the steam client:
go to the steam store and middle-click any link, it will open in a new window, and more interestingly the url-bar will be editable
so we can look around various chrome://about
pages like chrome://extensions-support/
which shows there is "some" api support, but if you visit the chrome web store, it won't let you install any extensions, even if you point it directly to a CRX file, it will simply download the file.

Pi hole? It's not free or that easy but I guess it's an option?

Thanks, not sure what it is, but according to this comment, it might not seem to be worth it, especially if it's not free.

By not free, I think they meant you have to use a home server, preferably a Raspberry Pi for using Pi-hole (hence the name). It is possible to block Youtube ads over DNS but Google changes the ad servers for Youtube ads pretty often so you would have to update this list often as well, so it's kinda boring. But it is possible.
Comment has been collapsed.
Seems too much work for such a little thing.
Besides, atleast a year ago raspberry's were expensive, i had to get one to auto softmod my ps4 (not that i managed to get it done).
And now it's all still in crates for 8 months since i moved (i need to get curtains first, then i can unload the crates and put stuff under my bed).
Comment has been collapsed.
For Youtube, probably. But it's very useful for general adblocking. It even blocks ads in mobile apps. You can use some old laptop as your home server, though check for power consumption first, I use my old netbook and it uses a little bit more power than a Raspberry Pi. It might not worth it if it uses too much power since it runs 7/24.
It seems you need to play Unpacking to get some courage. :)

Normal blockers like Adblock and Ublock generally suited me fine except some sites noticing it and "demanding" you to turn it off or allow the site, why i also have Edge, Chrome, Firefox, sometimes different browsers suit different cases/needs.
I definitely want to play that game sometime (but backlog) :p.And yeah it's also partially lazyness, but i got 2 left hands, i totally rely on volunteers while my dad was such a handyman but sadly he passed away before i moved out.
The curtains have to be hanged before stuffing stuff underneath my bed, because then i couldn't move my bed anymore, and it will be in the way of the windows.

I think they detect what extension you've installed and that's why they demand you to disable it, but it mostly doesn't work even if you disable it for the site (maybe completely disabling it would work, haven't tried probably not gonna try ever :)). Because of this, I tend to leave those sites if they demand me to disable adblock.
It's actually a very short game but backlog is backlog :) Perhaps setting an imaginary deadline for yourself would work, at least should have an effect over lazyness, something like spring-cleaning. Maybe you need a spider friend. :P

I had one important site that recognized it that i couldn't ignore, couldn't remember what it was though, edge is my main browser (yes even IE up till a point), where i got 2 adblockers installed, in firefox or chrome not.
I need people to help (like with the curtains) i need friends, i need love (and i wanted to persue that in the new year, but the only dating site i knew about which was free and used before turned into a paid tinder look a like) so now i am like how would i meet someone then?
I bought a threadmill to get some much needed exercize (some said to me walking outside is free and better, but half the year it's too cold and rainy here and inside i can also do it while watching something or listen to music you know), took me a few days to gather the energy to set it up.
And since i am moved i mostly eat bread, i can't also gather myself to cook properly like why would i spend 15-30 minutes to make something that is gone within 5? If i had someone to cook for (or vice versa) that it would be so much easier, like when my mom had a stroke and i cooked months for us.
Heck i even spend much on an airfryer with 2 baskets, you could just put in raw meat on the left, and vegetables on the right, press a button and you got yourself a meal, but even that (like the cleaning) i am like mweh, and my mom got me an oven, but groceries are expensive like many oven meals cost 5-6 euro, i can't afford that much.
I sadly had a cat but had to give her away due circumstances. :x It was better, but offcourse it did leave a void and missing her.
Mostly, i think i need human love right now.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think using 2 adblockers at the same time is unnecessary but you can use a setup like "adblocker + privacy badger". By the way, some people say uBlock Origin runs better on Edge comparing to Chrome, is that true?
Well, after a certain age, it's hard to gain new friends unless you attend to some community, it's better if it's a hobby or something you like of course but doesn't really obligatory. Love is tricky, it doesn't work if you're rational. But you still need to meet people, again a community would be helpful for this too.
I wouldn't expect groceries to be that expensive in a country like Netherlands, I guess you're affected like everyone else. For cooking, you can try to make twice as much so you wouldn't cook for every other day. I did this for a year when I was alone, then I started to like cooking and now I like to cook. Maybe you can turn it into some kind of hobby, that definitely helps.
Yeah, I remember that smol fluff. It's sad that you had to leave her. Pet love could be great for occupation but I agree that it doesn't fill the same place for human love. Not the same but you can try plants, they also have a calming air.

I barely check guides and stuff anymore in the client... Since the UI overhaul, everything is slow, sooo slow. Like, takes a couple seconds to react (open a tab and stuff), and then takes ages to load as if I had a 1kbps connection. Having a browser in the background and going through guides/achievement/lists/sometimes even chat runs smoother than using the overlay. I like it visually, but the experience is degraded on my non-gaming laptop.
