Don't worry, some people just like to jump on the "Hate CoD" bandwagon, just for the hell of it. Usually they're the kids that never got to play CoD, because mommy and daddy won't let them play violent games.

True, very true. Many children do play CoD, but I think you're the child for hating on games that others enjoy.

Because the developer asked its employees "why are we making this game?" and none of them could offer up an actual valid response.

The license ran out, just like Ghostbusters and Iron Man etc. If you want a game that is based on a license than I suggest you grab it sooner rather than later because there's no telling when the license runs out and it gets removed. Spiderman is one example.

I wanted Outrun and TOCA but both got taken off due to car licenses.

So, if I want Telltale's WD and Transformers: FOC should I hurry up. There's a general duration of a license?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes there's a duration of the license but there's no way to tell unless you work for one of the companies. Who knows how long they signed on for. I'd say you'd be pretty safe with Walking Dead considering there's going to be a season 2. Who knows with Transformers. The only reason a publisher has to renew a license is to make a new game and it didn't sell well so they might not. There's no way to tell. The first Transformers game has been on Steam for a long time so you might be safe.

It could be something minor though. If Sonic Racing Transformed stops selling in a couple years they might not renew the license with Disney for Wreck It Ralph and have to take it down. Like I said, the only way to know is if you work for one of the companies.

Fall of Cybertron came out last August or September I believe. I would imagine that they signed at least a year contract, so you probably have at least until then. I would try to pick it up during the summer sale if it goes at least 66% off (like it was a few weeks ago) and you have a strong interest in it.

Like Jozzz says though, The Walking Dead is going to be around for awhile since it sold VERY well and there is going to be a season 2. What's more, it seems to me like Telltale is in the habit of holding onto licenses past when I imagine they are particularly profitable (think Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, and particularly the Law and Order games).

Wait, are you saying that every game has a license period in steam and can be removed? I find it hard to believe that EA renewing C&C series on steam every year. What am I missing?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not renewing C&C on Steam, EA renewing EA's contract with C&C to have license to use it. Although, the example you provide is not very good, as they probably don't have the license that's being talked about, more likely something different. It's not about being on Steam, but about being allowed to use somebody else's stuff in your stuff.

I understand now, thank you for clarifying this to me :)

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No that's not what I'm saying at all. EA own the C&C license so there is nothing to renew. Exactly what halnco said. It's not about being on Steam, it's about using other peoples IP on your game and then selling it for a profit. That doesn't last forever. Activision can't sell new copies of Avatar anywhere, not just Steam. Take the recent Duck Tales Remastered as an example. Capcom had the license 20 something years ago to make that game but it ran out so the game was never sold on Nintendo's VC or anything like that. They had to arrange a new deal with Disney to release the game again. If you own the IP yourself then you can obviously sell it for as long as you want.
