Unfortunately I don't have a choice; the carpet is too thick for me to move the chair without a lot of effort

Then I am not really sure, maybe get a lighter chair, low neck with thin legs but flat feet. That should make moving it easier without damaging the carpet too much. Either way, imo, there's no good way to protect the carpet. High pile carpet always get dented easy, Softer once just take a little longer, but are a better option if thing on top of them keep moving a lot, as they may jump right back up.

I don’t really care about damaging the carpet honestly. I’d like to replace it with laminate, but that’s a pretty large endeavor since this isn’t the only room to replace the floors

Most chair mats that I've seen are too thin and overpriced. Maybe grab a thick sheet of something from the hardware that can take the weight. Polycarbonate sheet or maybe waterproof some mdf and round the corners.

Definitely agree with you there. Wouldn't a sheet like that still slide around without the anchors at the bottom? Or is something like that heavy enough that moving the chair wouldn't slide the sheet?

I would personally use something at least 8 to 10mm. Large enough sheet that you can move around without running of the edge. Can't see it moving much, but you could add ya own spikes to the corners if you wanted. Don't use acrylic, it would probably crack.

I’ll have to head over to the hardware store and see what they have. Thanks for the ideas!

Frankly, I don't quite get what's the main problem you're trying to solve. Protect the carpet from a damage by chair? If so, have you tried bigger wheels for the chair (like these)?
Also you could try to use a large sheet of acrylic glass as the mat.

The issue is the mat not staying in place and also getting dented by the chair, the mat moves away from where I need it to be and the divots make it difficult to actually move the chair

I think, the only real solution would be either change the wheels to somewhat bigger so they can easily roll over the pile (like 10-12 cm) or change the carpet. IMO any mat won't be very reliable. But I'm merely theoretical here, unfortunately.

I’ve been looking at bigger wheels. The reading I’ve done suggests to only use wheels of a particular material (metal or hard nylon) but that material just doesn’t seem to be common. I suppose I could try a set of large polyurethane wheels, that seems to be the most common material. Worst case I can just return the set if it doesn’t work out and I’m no worse off than I am now

That's unavailable for me but I suppose something like that might work out... I can definitely look into it further. Thanks for the suggestion!

but this i show u not good because is plain,if you can find something like this but that is also same lego then is better because can put one up to another or combine weight\height,modular

FYI - your wheels would get stuck where the pieces connect. And it probably would rip that material super quick. That type of thing is good to protect kids' heads but not for a chair to roll on.

I have 1/2" pile, so right on the edge of medium/high pile. I've had issues finding a good mat as well until 2 years ago I ordered this one and it's worked like a champ the whole time. I have to readjust maybe once every few months and there's been no cracks that whole time.

Thanks! I had dismissed that one since it says low/ medium, but knowing that its worked well for you gives me some confidence. Having to adjust every few months is no big deal... I'm honestly fixing mine several times a day.
Is this very solid? Has it developed any dents or divots in your use?

It's been solid and no dents. The only imperfection I've noticed is a minor scratch and I'm not even sure what caused that. I've been working from home since I bought it and that desk also has my gaming pc, so it gets quite a bit of use. The only negative would be that I wish it was a few inches bigger. I have a corner desk (work pc one side, gaming pc other) so I tend to swivel around and can sometimes get a wheel to slide off if I move too far.

Yeah, I definitely need a larger mat. My current one is 47"x53" and its a perfect size. Just not great in every other way xD

I bought something similar from IKEA - https://www.ikea.lv/lv/rooms/darbistaba/piederumi-birojam/piederumi-birojam/kolon-gridas-aizsargs-art-44881100
I got it because I have wood floors as not to scratch them. But I suppose this would work very well on top of carpet as well. The link is in Latvian but you could probably search for the product name in your local IKEA if you have it.
Its very durable. But yeah - who knows how well it would sit on high pile carpet though. Only way would be to try. I had one in my previous flat.... I just removed it from the place I had my office space.

Thanks, I'll check it out! I've been trying to find something specifically for high-pile but maybe I should just take a chance on something that checks all the other boxes. High pile carpet must be really uncommon these days.

i know that my kids carpet worked normally with nops(dunno if this is even the right word hope so atleast) on the bottom it didnt move and you could roll on it with a chair ,dunno how its called though .
i never thought to deep about carpets sorry ;/

Right? I never did either until I started dealing with this. Is the nop like a carpet/ mat, thats like rubberish on the bottom and then a very shallow carpet?

Thanks! I found a couple things online, I'll definitely investigate further

I need some help finding something for my home office. I've got a very high pile carpet (>3/4") and am really tired of having to reposition my mat several times a day. The mat I have is supposed to be for high pile, but it doesn't hold to the carpet at all and has several divots, it's just not a good mat in any sense.
EDIT FOR CLARITY: the issues are the mat itself constantly moving along the room, requiring me to reposition it frequently, as well as the divots that have developed in the mat, which are most likely a contributing factor to the mat not staying in place.
I had tried one from Amazon previously, which didn't dent but was too small. When I tried to order a larger one, they sent me one of the same size, and then would not be able to get me the properly sized one for like two months. So I picked up the one I have now elsewhere and want to get rid of. The Amazon one is no longer available at all, so I can't go back to that.
For the life of me, I can't find another good high-pile mat. The most popular one seems to be from ES Robbins, but that's what I have now and am extremely disappointed in. There doesn't seem to be any other options for high-pile carpet mats on any of the other retailers I've looked at or through Google.
In searching further, I've learned that metal or hard nylon wheels can work for higher pile carpets, but I can't seem to find that either. Everything is either plastic or polyurethane. It's really hard to imagine that high pile carpets are so uncommon that there's virtually no market for products around them. Am I just looking in the wrong places? You would think between Amazon, office supply stores, and even hardware stores I would find something.
Anyone with a high pile carpet in their office, what do you use that actually works?
Obligatory bribe for reading
