My IRL cake day is coming up soon, so I decided to do GAs that end on that day. Levels are 2-5.
I'm tired of quizes, ciphers and all that crap so I decided to steal idea of some old puzzle.
There was the guy named Epstein or something like that. He invented time, space, quantum physics and the zebra puzzle. Only top 98% could solve it.

Anyway. There are 5 guys who live next to each other on the same street. They all have first name, middle name, last name, distinctive feature, pet and favorite hobby.

  1. The guy with a middle name Hunter is next to the guy with a first name David.
  2. The owner of the tiny octopus is exactly to the right of the tall stature guy.
  3. The guy obsessed with the Large Hadron Collider has a last name Vale.
  4. The guy doing oversized clothing on a spare time has a middle name Warren.
  5. The guy with a last name Smith is next to the owner of the massive rhino.
  6. Warren (still middle name) is exactly to the right of the guy with a long nose.
  7. The tall guy is somewhere between the guy who collects miniatures and Hunter, in that order.
  8. The guy with a middle name Quinton is next to the guy with a last name Petrenko.
  9. Vaugh (middle name) is at one of the ends.
  10. The guy with a first name Harvey assembles miniatures.
  11. The guy with a last name Naiman is exactly to left of the guy interested in microbiology.
  12. The guy with a patronim Dmitrievich (we will use it as a middle name) is exactly to the left of Hunter (middle name too).
  13. The owner of the small mouse is next to the guy who learn macroeconomics for fun.
  14. The LHC guy is next to the guy with a last name Smith.
  15. The owner of the great dane is exactly to the left of the fan of the Large Hadron Collider.
  16. Alex (first name) is next to the dog owner from the previous sentence.
  17. Hunter is the weirdo who loves macroeconomics news.
  18. The guy with a humongous ego is exactly to the left of Vale (last name).
  19. The guy with big belly is somewhere to the right of Alex (first name).
  20. In the second house is the guy with a first name Ivan.
  21. Smith is exactly to the right of the macroeconomics fan.
  22. The guy with short hairs is somewhere to the left from the guy with a last name Miller.
  23. Someone owns the big horse, don't remember who.
In which house does Edward live?

Rules? You can and probably should give each other any hints/clues/ways for a solution other than direct answers.
You can ask me any question and I'll happily ignore them. If there is any mistake - well, I don't speak English and regret nothing.

Solution:
Build the spreadsheet. There are 5 columns in total. How many symbols does the GA code consist of? There are 3 rows of names and 3 rows of big/small adjectives. Where on SG big/small adjectives are used? Use 1st letters from names and big/small adjectives as upper/smaller case and you'll have the code for the GAs. 3 in total. In their descriptions you'll get symbols for the 4th GA. In 4th you'll get the answer for the "house" question. The house was just the red herring to hide the codes in plain sight - in the spreadsheet itself.

I have solved it, can confirm that having a neat spreadsheet with it solved will definitely help in your next steps, though technically it's not necessary, but would be easier with it, in any case, you'll need to solve the puzzle above.
On a different note, I was surprisingly on the way to bruteforcing it.

Still didn't solve but I guess I'm onto something. Don't consider it a hint as i have no idea whether it's what we need but if you check "distinctive feature, pet and favorite hobby", you'll see something that unites them.

Ok, i've solved it and i must say i was really lucky with my guess, so i'm not that good to give a hint. But all you really need is in comments on the first page. Good luck, everyone.

A good hint (maybe too strong?): forget the question about Edward's house, and IGNORE the link to 2solve.me and the question therein. Pretend they do not exist.

Personally the spreadsheet hint in the first page of the discussion here helped me. Also everything in the spreadsheet you make is useful too, so don't lose focus by just looking at one part of it. That was the mistake i had made at first.

Is this a matter of writing out the initials of each name, feature, pet, and hobby in order or something? Is it important not to abbreviate certain things?
I have a spreadsheet with the Einstein puzzle all worked out, but nothing is really popping out to me. The names aren't really spelling anything, and I don't know if I've gotten certain things written down right (e.g. I wrote down "big horse" as just "horse", is the "big" part important here?)

Is the order in which you put the parameters important? E.g. First name, middle name, last name, features, pet, hobby instead of pet, hobby, features?
I thought I was onto something (which looked consistent), but it seems I either mixed something up or am completely on the wrong track. 😋

Can I post a picture of (what I believe is) the solution of the zebra puzzle since it doesn't help to solve the actual puzzle? kinda want to make sure I solved it correctly.

If you can answer all the 23 points of the puzzle with no error, you have the correct solution.

One final hint: make sure to copy down the exact description, don't shorten it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What am I not shortening here? E.g., should I be writing down "collects miniatures" instead of just "miniatures"? Or am I on the completely wrong path? I made a spreadsheet with the columns being the houses and the rows being "first name, middle name, last name, feature, pet, hobby" and I put all the info in order, but I still can't seem to find the right answer.

What they mean is to make sure you accurately note what it is, e.g. don't put "dog," put "great dane."

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I've got that, but some of the clues are inconsistent. "Collecting miniatures" and "assembling miniatures" both appear, so I just put down "miniatures" for that one. "Large Hadron Collider" and "LHC" both appear as well. But I have no clue how to tell if these variations are significant or not. I don't see anything spelled out in the initials, and the names and other details all seem entirely random.

I'm not sure how to explain without getting too spoilery, but the meaning is more important than the specific words. Assembling/collecting work as synonyms here.

I can see there's a lot of size stuff going on. All the features, pets, and hobbies have something size-related (e.g. tiny octopus, big belly, microbiology.) But I don't see how any of this is supposed to come together into an answer.

You're on the right track. I would suggest just writing down the first full description.

I've been staring at a spreadsheet with the Einstein puzzle solved and not been able to come up with anything. All the hints have been too vague so far. It seems like people are treating this like a magic eye drawing: you'll know it when you see it. Except I've never been able to do those lol.

I've seen some confusing hints here as well: everything matters, write down the "full" description, but also the meaning is more important than the specific words? The former makes me think the answer is somehow writing down the solved puzzle into the answer box, but the latter makes me think that the solved puzzle is hiding some kind of riddle or code.

I guess my question is: does the solved puzzle act as the answer to the question somehow, or does the solved puzzle act as a riddle or code, the solution to which is the answer to the question?

I'm guessing (Still haven't solved it) that you state something like "[First name] [Middle name] [Surname] [Distinctive Feature] [Pet] [Favourite Hobby]" with the correct information as laid out.

There must be something else to it as I'm certain I have all of the above correct, but it's not working for me. Apparently once it hits you it hits you, so good luck with it all :)
