Ok, so here's the thing:
I'm thinking about buying my mother e-book for Christmas but I don't have any experience with them so I decided to ask you, good people of the internets.
Price range: $100 max and preferably be able to listen music on it.

You could probably find a Sony TRS-T2 on sale still.

Real question is where you live and is there ebooks available there?

Cheap tablets are also an option.

I'm in Croatia but you can't count on huge discounts here in my country compared to ones that you can find online.

I would first make sure that there is books available in Croatian in ebook format. And from what stores.

That is if your mother doesn't read in other languages. Article about availability.

If she'll be wanting it for actually reading books rather then games and apps, she'll prefer an e-ink reader.
Not only will the battery life be much better, but because it's not a lit screen, it'll only reflect light back much like a real book meaning it'll be easier on the eyes.

Kindle e-inks are nice, they have a huge library ready to download direct from the amazon store built right into it.
Nooks are really cheap at the moment for the simple touch version, they have the barnes and noble store built in but not quite as good as kindle, however they do have micro-usb storage and 250mb onboard that you can put books onto via drag and drop without a problem.

They're the two main contenders imo. Personally, I'd go with a Nook and put her some books on she'd like to read and then let her buy them from B&N store. Very simple.

Then get her a cheap MP3 player :) .. but if you must have music, and want simplicity there really is only the choice of an ipad if she wants a large screen or ipod if she's happy with a small screen.

Kindle, definitely. I've had one for around 4 years, and Amazon's customer service is without a doubt the best I've had to deal with.
The kindle itself is great, and you have Amazon to back it up.

Not sure, but I think everything is okay for that, e.g. I read all my stuff on my smartphone, the only downside is that I have crack my bought E-Books, just because I can't run the kindle app :/
If you want a cheap one, look for some of these tolinos (if they are available for you), they cost new 100€
