I'm using FreeFileSync to make backups and, while I don't know it's exactly what you are looking for, it might work depending on what you need.

Thanks, well i got 2 folders with files, in general about 99% it's the same files, i want to root out what is different or missing, and then compare what is different, rather then having to check each and every single file manually.

Not sure if it would do that.

I don't have software, but if it is just two directories...

If you do this (in Windows):

  1. open a cmd.exe window
  2. (from the first directory): dir > dir1.txt
  3. (from the second directory): dir2.txt

If you send me those two text files, I can use my text editor/excel to send you an excel spreadsheet that would show files names (dir1 + dir2) with file size and date stamp for both folders. I can even highlight the files that have only exist in one of the two folders or that have a different file size and/or time stamp.

I've tried many differs, Beyond Compare is the one I recommend.

Some alternatives: WinMerge, DiffMerge, Meld, Araxis, ExamDiff, ... there are tons more.

Beyond Compare is good, and it's not too complicated if you just need basic comparison.

it's not complicated at all, and it has advanced filtering capabilities, so you can quickly find exact kind of "differences" (e.g orphan files that exist on one side but not the other, differences but no orphans, etc.)

in addition to folder comparisons, it also has file comparisons, 3-way merges, syncing, ... It really is a powerful tool.

Try meld or fslint. The first compares files/dirs (filtering: identical, changed, new), the second one finds duplicates

Depending on your dir listing software, you could probably out put a .txt file with complete file list with hashes, then compare the 2 .txt files with a free online text comparison site.

Total commander does it natively.
Free trial is with full features and for undefined time.
Use "compare directories" and "compare by content"from the menu.
