So, I found out last night, idling in games no longer works to get trading cards!

I used to lunch a couple of games, minimize them (to lower GPU and CPU load) and go to sleep. 8h later I'd have my cards.

Not any more, I fired up 3 games last night, 10h later I had exactly ZERO cards in my inventory.

EDIT:
I appreciate the number of good tips and info in this topic, but like 75% of the replies are irrelevant. Let me explain:
READ what the topic states, BEFORE saying you need to be in-game for more than 2h for a card to drop!

TL,DR:
I know about the 2 hour thing, enough already.

I'm probably imagining it but I always felt like cards wouldn't drop if I was "playing" two games at once.

it only works for one. i use a program that makes it think the game is open, so you don't even have to download the game.

Idlemaster? Or something else?
I noticed that if I was using that + playing another game cards wouldn't drop. So I just assumed you couldn't do two things at once.

open the game for cards first then play the game you want and you should get cards for only the first one. they could have changed it. 4 cards away from my 200 max sale for a year so kinda stoped

It does work still, just takes a little longer. You have to play the game for at least 2 hours before cards begin to drop now. I idled last night and got mine.

Can't they remove this "2 hours thing" after 2 weeks have passed?
So they are sure we aren't going to ask a refund and we get our cards faster..

run only 1 game

if not help try this

  • Please exit Steam, and navigate to the …\Steam\ directory (by default this is C:\Program Files\Steam - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).
  • Delete all of the files in this folder except: Steam.exe and the \Steamapps\ and \Userdata\ folders
  • Restart your computer and test the issue again.

Never got card drop with 3 games opened

Up to 2 at the same time, I still get cards, as soon as I open the third one everything stops. Coincidence? probably.

Thanks for the input, I'll try 2 games at first, if it don't work, I'll try to get them one by one...

For the record: I've gotten a max of 6 games running at the same time last year, got all the cards in about 9 hours :)

You should idle one game at a time, if you don't want to interact with it (changing games etc.) download IdleMaster it logins to your account and automatically idles games.

  • Why did it work before and not now if that's the logic?

It seemed the only reasonable explanation since Idlemaster still works just fine for me :P
It does seem to take considerably longer now.

As someone mentioned below, you can always use SAM to multi-run games until the 2hr mark.
Alternatively, people use "Skip Game" on IdleMaster and then just run it again so it idles a different game.

How do you set it to just idle everything till the 2hrs mark?

I didn't, these were all games with 0 time played and I ran them all simultaneously, so I'm just keeping an eye on it.

So, did you get any card drops from running these less than 2 hours?

Comment has been collapsed.

No, cards will never drop until after 2h.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I had heard some people say that Valve now made that a universal minimum. I know some publishers had previously modified drop times for their own games. Valve is fairly close-mouthed and often seems to expect you to figure things out yourself.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, that is now a global minimum in order to counter refund abuse. Card drop rates are set by the developers, but these drop rates won't begin until after the first two hours have passed.

open all games using SAM then idle it till reach 2.0 hours
after that, close SAM then use idlemaster

they should tie card drops to achievements or gameplay progress. that way the the prices would return to normal and idiots back in there places where they belong.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There's absolutely no way to achieve this, people will just use SAM, and the amount of resources it would take to implement card drops with legitimate game progress is something you can be sure Valve have no interest in doing.

  1. Launch ONE game at the time. Idling multiple games will break the cards dropping process.
  2. Games are now required to have at least two hours of play time to start dropping cards, since the refund system was implemented.

You can always launch multiple games at the same time for two hours, then begin your "real" idling. (I don't take credits for the idea, thanks to a SG chat user. :P)
