I have always used iPhone. Originally I wanted one because I was 11 years old and the iPhone had the most fun games on it, so I have been going through a few iPhones since, and I am now using an SE which has sadly started to die. I am super comfortable with the OS because I find it very easy to use, but now it's time to say goodbye to iPhone for 2 reasons:

  1. The new phones are too big! SE is the perfect size to fit in my pocket while also feeling good to use. I don't get why we need tablet-sized phones. I googled recommendations for small phones but all recommendations are still too big!
  2. I can't go without the headphone jack. Mainly because I just want to plug something in without issue, but also because I play rhythm games (mainly Bandori) on the phone and I've found that the music lags behind with BlueTooth headphones.

So, as small of a phone as possible, clean and easy software and no wireless bullshit. I'm going to do some research myself but I would also love to hear some thoughts.

(I also hope I put this in the right category, Hardware is described to be about computers/gaming)

You use Apple stuff and you don't know? The right size is Apple latest product's size >.>
Sorry if I don't have any suggestions, I don't care about phones, I'm using a second-hand one. Have a bump!

I was a little insulted by the SE 2020 announcement because that phone is not small :( Also the wireless issue. I'm just going to go all out boomer about this because this is ridiculous.

I do use my phones to the point of dying though. I really don't want to let go of my SE yet but I'll have to start looking at options.

Omg lmao. This is the one, everyone can go home now.

Seriously though, everyone is reacting like I'm using this when I say that I want a small phone. No, I just don't want a phone twice the size of my pocket.

I am in the same situation. So, this post won't be any help :(

I am still using an iphone 4S. I have a 6S from someone that upgraded, but I never activated it because it's too big and too hard to hold with the thin rounded sides (I don't want to make it even bigger with a case). I have heard that the 4S will not work after this year because the service providers are not going to support 3G anymore, so I will have to upgrade. I was happy when I heard about the new SE and probably would have bought one, but they ruined it by making it thin like the other phones with the rounded sides and it has no headphone jack. I use wired earbuds with my phone multiple times every day. I don't want to have to deal with an adapter and I am definitely not going wireless.

Also, I don't care about Apple or Android, I am just using Apple because it was given to me for free.

Edit: I thought the new SE was the same size as the old one, I didn't realize it's actually the same size as the iphone 6. That's why they are claiming it's their most popular size. I would not buy a phone that big. I want something the size of the original SE.

Hope you find something good. I wonder why there isn't a market for reasonably sized phones, I know there are people like me who are holding on to their SEs because there is no good match for a similar phone.

There must be a lot of people buying small phones because on Apple's website for the new SE, it says "iPhone SE packs our most powerful chip into our most popular size at our most affordable price."

Edit: I don't know how they are claiming it is their most popular size. Did the previous SE sell that well or are they combining all the sales of the iphone 1, 3, 4, 5, and SE because they are close to the same size?

What do you mean? The iPhone SE is an iPhone 6S in small size, powerful enough and still receiving iOS updates. If the battery is dying just replace it with a new one. AFAIK there aren't powerful Android phones on the market as small as the SE.

Yep, it's the battery. I can't use it outside and inside it takes like 30 minutes from 100 to 0. Still going to look to fix that but I should probably look for options.

Also I don't know if this a thing outside of where I live but here it can actually be cheaper to get a new(er) phone. As in, you don't pay for the actual phone but for the phone service subscription and they just get you the phone for free when you sign up. I didn't want to switch from 5S to SE in the beginning either, but I ended up saving money by doing so.

What is your battery health percentage in settings > battery > battery health?

it can actually be cheaper to get a new(er) phone.

It depends on the phone replacement you choose. Unless you get a new one "for free" with that service subscription. Also you can replace it by yourself with a compatible battery if you know how to do it.

An iPhone is a very expensive phone and the official battery replacement for an SE is around $50-$60, it's totally worth IMHO.

77%, which I guess is in a normal not-currently-using-it state. If I'm outside or playing a simple game it's probably worse.

Thanks, it was just to confirm that feature is useless. If the percentage was real, with 77% it should last a lot longer than 30 minutes.

I'm currently using a Umidigi A5 Pro and I can't complain. It struggles with the heaviest games, but most games work perfectly fine and the phone is perfectly smooth as a whole. It has modern features such as fingerprint unlocking and triple camera, but retains essentials such as the headphone jack. It's not too big nor too small, it fits great in the pocket, and the screen is fantastic. The battery lasts a long time, especially by today's standards. And the best part, all of it for a more than fair price. Yes, it's a chinese brand, but who cares. The phone is great.

Interesting, I used a phone database looking for your specifics and the last phone released with your requirements ... was the SE in 2016. ;D

I fear you'll have to make compromises. You could insist on the size, but drop the touchscreen and you get some options.
Or you drop the headphone jack, and LG might have something for you.
Or you accept smartphones slightly bigger than the SE, and you get some few candidates.I recommend playing with the size limits for this last search, you might find something that pleases you.

Ffs. SE is a completely normal sized phone. There's no point in anything bigger, I'm not a giant.

Going to look into the size options though. I get that I will have to switch to something bigger because I am not going to sacrifce my music games :/ Still as small as possible would be nice.

no headphone jacks on these if you're willing to compromise, but samsung has the galaxy z flip, and the new motorola razr. both phones fold small, but open up to a normal size phone screen.

I personally have Samsung S8 (got it just because it was half off without caring about anything else). I dont know about other phones much so I dont know what kind of sizes the new phones have - but S8 isnt really that wide. It has 5.8 inch screen but its only 1 cm wider then iphone SE. Its quit long but still narrow enough to fit comfortably in hand..

You have to get used to any new phone you get, but when handling other phones I find them to be overly wide and uncomfortable to handle with one hand.. You can get to some 80-90% of the screen with your thumb only on S8 (leaving only the upper taskbar a bit out of reach without moving the hand. And it has 3.5mm jack

Not the newest phone, but maybe S9 or S10 has the same build as S8 (narrow but long making it easy to use).. Cant help with new ones.. I wont probably be getting new phone unless I can again get it for half the price.. I find it ridiculous to pay anything more then 500 eur for something you use for calls and massaging mostly.. You basically overpay for needlessly powerful hardware that isnt used unless manufacturer rolls out a new update that renders it powerless

If you want an Android phone, I wouldn't go with anything other than Motorola or Google's Pixel. Most other brands don't provide OS updates for as long (except on their high-end phones maybe), they often install bloatware apps, which can be tricky to remove, and they make various changes to the default Android UI, which I always find to be inferior to the stock experience.

This might be the phone for you : https://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_xz2_compact-9082.php

Not the freshest but should satisfy most of your needs. You can also use the phone finder function on their website to further refine what you might need.

Would still be using my Z3C if i didnt break it completely.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to put it in your pocket? Holsters are more secure and won't get your screen all scratched up by whatever else is in your pocket. I get not wanting a tablet-sized phone, though--neither did I, when I was looking for a new one. I did want something a bit bigger than I think you're asking for, though...

I got a Moto G7, which is about 6.5"x3.5" and strikes a good balance (for me) between being big enough to read what's on the screen and small enough to hold comfortably. The G7 Play is smaller (I think 6"X3"?). And yes, they have a headphone jack. That was one of my requirements, too. :)

Good luck! I hope you find something you can be happy with.

I don't have anything else in the same pocket. I use one of those wallet phone cases so I can just have all my essentials there so I don't need to bring a bag/purse every time I'm out (I live in a calm place with no real risk of stealing). Holsters are a no because I care about fashion :s

Thanks for the suggestion!

Haha, fair enough. I'm probably just a bit paranoid about potential damage after having had to deal with a secondhand phone that had a glitchy screen (had a big discolored spot and would sometimes misregister taps as halfway across the screen) due to abuse.

Admittedly, I felt a little like Mad-Eye Moody when I was writing about holsters and sticking things in pockets, lol. "Don't put your phone there, boy! What if it broke? Better wizards than you have gotten glass shards stuck in their buttocks, you know."

I am in the same boat, although instead of headphone jack, I want dual SIM with a separate dedicated micro SD card slot. Five inches was the cut-off point for that, but now it went up to over six inches. I have giant hands, but I just want a normal-sized smartphone, not a goddamn plate.

I am perfectly happy with my standard-size flip-phone, which offers calls and texting and nothing else.
[It doesn't even accept incoming emojis or attachments! Well, not saying that's a plus, just clarifying it's that basic. :P]

For situations where I'd actually want a portable device for reasons other than just communication, I've got an Amazon tablet that works juuuuust fine. The only downside to my approach is that I don't have convenient mapping/gps functions readily on-hand [as, even if I am lugging my tablet around for some reason, it'd still require wi-fi access to utilize such features]. But on the plus side? I've a very lightweight, compact, responsive phone that has a keyboard that's the perfect size for my clumsy old fingers and an interface that's intuitive and straightforward.

I mean, there were a few smartphones along the way that I was okay with- they had pretty traditional menus and slide-out keyboards- but more modern smartphones are just.. convoluted. And their digital keypads are the touch-equivalent of trying to get through a really bad automated messaging system.
Y'know, the "Do you want to continue? Say Yes or No." "Yes." "I'm sorry, I didn't understand that. Did you want to return to the main menu?" "NO!" "Okay. Do you want to continue?" "YES." "I'm sorry, we seem to be having difficulties. Now returning you to the main menu." type. :P
