I picked it up for US$2.75 during the game.co.uk price error a few days ago, and I must say I regretted waiting until now to get it on the word of other users. From what I've heard, it was utterly unplayable ****. Instead, I'm more than 15 hours into the game, working on Chapter 7 and having a great time, even if I'm working through it quickly to beat it before leaving to visit the family for Christmas stuff.

I've dropped a prostitute into sewage, lit a bunch of guys on fire, thrown people into death pits, and watched people have sex in the whore house (no joke, I was surprised when I caught it through a peep hole). Oh, and tailed a guy so drunk that I had to open the gates for him.

I really should give the others a try, but the original was a little too dated for me, and lack of native gamepad support in them is disappointing. Might hunt down Deadly Shadows for XBox though, that will solve that problem at least.

I actually seem to have a liking for the less popular stealth games (Thief reboot, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Vampire Rain), while disliking the really popular ones (Metal Gear Solid 3 and Dishonoured are both titles I didn't enjoy). Anyone else here want to admit they have poor taste in stealth games? :P

Also, for everyone who hasn't played Thief yet, a giveaway.

They said that Thief is a good game. Just because it is not the same as the old series, people started to discriminate it.

I thought Thief was awful. The reboot was boring and only gave an illusion of having the freedom to do what you wanted.

It was alright, it was something that I play through it once and then forget it. My biggest gripe was the movement, no jumping and you could only climb in places where the game allowed you to, it felt like a railroad.

Interesting. Perhaps I should keep it then. I got it on the Square Enix surprise box and thought I'd try to trade it for Tomb Raider. Didn't do it yet because I've never traded before and I'm hesitant about getting into it, but perhaps I should just add the game to my backlog and save myself trouble...

Ah, Dishonored. My favourite game :D I finished it twice (for both the high chaos and the low chaos endings) and I loved every minute of it. Can't wait to get the DLCs and play them as well :)

As far as the Thief games go, I loved the original trilogy. Haven't played the new Thief yet and I must say I'm pretty curious about it. I've read a very thorought review somewhere that mentioned both the good and the bad about the game and it seems Thief is an OK game on its own. The original Thief games were brilliant in about every aspect, so the gamers' expectations were high (and rightfully so, we could say). That's probably the main source of the displeasure, because from what I've heard, the new Thief just failed to deliver.

And speaking of stealth games, I also really enjoyed early Splinter Cell games (the first one + Pandora Tomorrow + Chaos Theory). The later ones, not so much :/

Did you play the original Snake Eater or did you play the updated Subsistence? Because in Subsistence and in the HD version, they give you the option to change it to an over-the-shoulder camera much similar to that of MGS4, rather than the bird's-eye-view from MGS1 and 2.

You might like that, but being a huge stealth fan myself I can assure you that there's nothing more frustrating in recent gaming trends then that what you just described.
EVERY game has to appeal to a broad audience nowadays which is extremely frustrating for fans of older stealth franchises, every game now has the stealth option yet none of them really commit to it, this is exactly why Thief, Hitman Absolution and SC: blacklist all where huge failures in the eyes of stealth fans.

Uh, as I said, you can play however you want. You can be a ghost. Players just aren't forced to, and different play styles can earn different bonuses. So shut the hell up. Why the hell should only you be satisfied?

Wow uncalled for, no need to be a dick about it when i'm just replying with my pov on STEALTH GAMES.
"shut the hell up?" how about you take your attention whoring threads and leave SG if you can't even stand it when someone disagrees on yet another one of bullshit threads as always?
SG isn't your personal playground you know, i've been noticing you've been acting like the selfproclaimed "new future mod" and all that but with that needlessly rude reply you just proved how horrible you would be if given ANY power on this site.

Also, pressuring people into doing your shitty forced fortix giveaways isn't something most people like either, hence why the majority has been avoiding it.

Your 'point of view' is that anything that you don't like shouldn't even be considered for inclusion, and that even having the option, not that you are forced, but as an option on how to progress, 'ruins the game'. So no, I wasn't the one being a dick. Always consider how your own attitude will poison people against you first. You might find yourself treated only with the respect you deserve from that.

As for the Fortix giveaways, the first 3 had more than 1000 copies between them and even got the devs to match us for the first event. A major deterrent towards participation from a number of regulars in those topics is the recent region lock, as they can't even buy copies to giveaway to anyone not in their country.

Lol, so basically if whatever I say doesn't suit you I should expect to be insulted, don't know about you but that's not how I deal with people.

"Your 'point of view' is that anything that you don't like shouldn't even be considered for inclusion, and that even having the option, not that you are forced, but as an option on how to progress, 'ruins the game So no, I wasn't the one being a dick. "

Did you even read what I wrote?
I clearly stated that that the cost of adding those features is that the main feature stealth is getting sidelined, if alternate play styles can be implemented without affecting the core gameplay of said franchise then noone would complain about them.

And yes, you're the one being a dick, I gave you the most common pov why people dislike certain games that used to be niche but became mainstream yet somehow you figured you had to tell me to shut the hell up as if I've attacked you on a personal level.

Regarding fortix, yes I remember how it was previously, but I also remember that you hadn't forgotten about humility just yet back then, not only the way you responded to me but also how you try to guilt trip people into joining your event and the general lack of appreciation of the people who do help out are signs of you thinking you own this place.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Seriously? Strawman much.

It's not hard to grasp the opposition of focused vs broad appeal gameplay. Despite what you seem to believe, it's fully possible to reduce the enjoyment of a certain playstyle by accommodating other playstyles in the same game. In fact, it's not only possible, it's the most likely result.

So konyo is fully within his right to expect games to focus on their main playstyle, rather than spread themselves thin and water everything down.

Also, if you want non-stealth gameplay, why are you playing a stealth game? It seems like what you want to play is Saints Row or Garry's Mod or Goat Simulator, not Thief.

My greatest issue with this game is just absolutely atrocious sounds. I can get over out of sync cut scenes which happened at times, but I kept hearing random footsteps pretty much anywhere I went, conversations between guards/NPCS randomly cutting off, etc. It just annoyed me to no end. I haven't finished the game yet, I will try it again after I buy a new PC in 3 weeks. I'm hoping this sound issue is on my end because I know there has been a sound related update released months ago.
Otherwise, what I played hasn't been nearly as horrible as user reviews claim it is.

I noticed any movement of the player makes footsteps, including rotating (to be fair, your feet would be moving if you rotated 360 degrees).
I can get over out of sync cut scenes which happened at times
Had that once myself, the subtitles would leave the screen before the lines were even started. Only during the cutscene after the tutorial mission though.

Mhmmm. I had that subtitle thing happen a few times, but I think some of it might have something to do with my PC as it's just not good enough for newer titles anymore. I agree the audio is odd. Between the "on-loop" guard convos and the odd way that footsteps/sounds always seem to be closer or louder than they should at random times is indeed pretty annoying.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah. I think it messed with gameplay a bit, at least for me. Since there is no third person perspective anymore which makes it slightly harder to get your bearings sometimes, I figured I could rely on listening to footsteps when needed, but that didn't work out at all. I remember I was doing the mission in brothel and in the room where the secret entrance to underground hallway with the symbols is I kept hearing footsteps all the time, even though I smacked the only guard that was near that room over his stupid head with mah club. A bit disappointing for a triple-A title, but oh well.

Probably a nostalgia thing (or to be more precise the fact that you lack any kind of nostalgia for it). I haven't played the new Thief myself (yet... it isn't very high on the backlog either), but from what I've seen of it, it really does seem like a nostalgia case.
You didn't have any expectations of it so when you got a non-broken functional game you automatically set up your expectations to be what it provided. People who played the older games set up their expectations to what those games provided and are disappointed that they ended up waiting too long for this one only for it to be different and not live up to their expectations.

I guess a few examples are in order. I can only speak for myself though:
Haven't played Duke Nukem 3D so I was ok with Duke Nukem Forever. Not exactly something I'd replay (and I really need to get the remaining achievements) but it wasn't the "WORST GAME EVER"™ and I don't feel like tasing it in the crotch until its balls explode.
Meanwhile I did play Devil May Cry 3 and 4 and I found DmC: Devil May Cry to be a colossal ffffucking disappointment. Being open minded about it, I guess people could probably like the game... but it has nothing on the old ones. NOTHING! Boring, simplistic, not funny at all, completely stuck up it's own ass, absolutely atrocious DLC that had minimal effort put in it; all in all a cash grab that should be cleansed with fire and a lot of soap applied to the mouth... well, I guess that's the example then, isn't it. :P

I try to find the good in games too (even when they personally disappoint and offend me like DmC) but most of the people who are... well, really vocal about it are those that saw only the bad things. Thus the Thief thing.

So I'm not the only one who thinks Dishonored is kind of cack compared to the new Thief then... That's something new.

Last time I played the audio was pretty wonky. Sometimes people would start talking and it would startle me as it sounded like they were right behind me, but we're actually way off in the distance or behind a wall.

Playing with headphones was quite annoying to say the least. According to a thread on the Eidos forums, no patch has ever addressed this.

Dang. You had it easier than me though, my guards sometimes started one long monologue or dialogue, then spotted me and yelled at me constantly while in pursuit, and their previous monologue/dialogue was just still not shutting up. Was a bit immersion-breaking to be pursued by some guard who calmly speaks about how his extra shift he has to take because of how the gloom sucks, but the hilarity made up all for it.

Thief: The Dark Project (aka Thief Gold on Steam) is generally considered the greatest in the series.

Thief 2 is generally inferior to the first. Both Thief 1 & 2 are considered the classic Thief games since they share the same game engine.

Thief 3: Deadly Shadows is completely different from the first two games (to classic Thief fans, worse). But Thief 3 still remains my favorite because of the three-way struggle between the different city factions (gangs?) -- you can be hostile, neutral, or friendly with each of them. It is like you are shaping the story -- your ideal version of it -- as you progress.

People have been calling the Thief 2013 reboot as a markedly inferior version of Dishonoured.

I really really wanted to like the new Thief game. The first few hours of the game can be really fun. However, about half way through, I thought the game started to get boring. The longer you play the more restrictive the levels are, the more frustrated you get because due to buggy guards, guard placement that make you question whether or not the game is properly balanced for stealth gameplay, and how strict some of the requirements are for getting "Ghost" on the later levels. It suffers the same problem many other current games suffer from. Too much hand holding and not enough of just letting the player have fun and try to find their own way through without feeling punished because they didn't do it the way the developer designed it to be done.
