So, basically, a lot of people seem to be getting free copies of Dota just for having Dota. I'm curious which conditions must be met to be eligible for that?

As far as I can tell: have Dota 2.

Well, I -have- Dota 2, as a gift from a friend. I've played 100 hours or so, making me mostly curious whether it only applies to people who got retail copies, or a specific amount of games played, or method of acquisition etc.

DOTA2 as you can see is still in beta for 30$. When all testing are done it probably became f2p, so for playing DOTA for 1 month you get 1 copy so you can give it someone for free and then he ( as everyone else playing DOTA) became a tester. And for example I'm not going to give it to first person I met but to someone who will play it with me. And then he will do the same and we have closed circle. I hope I helped.

I have it, won it on here and as far as I remember it was a key. I haven't played it however since I didn't enjoy what time I did put into it - what a superb community it has ._. No explanation what-so-ever.

I therefore don't meet any special criteria based on gameplay, but have so far had 4 free copies.

Yep, same here, one match played, 4 copies received. So who knows who can get one...
