Katawa Shoujo seems to be the perfect starter visual novel.
Out of the list, I'm only confident enough to recommend Shan Gui.
Some of the ones on the list are pretty skippable, such as Go! Go! Nippon! My First Trip to Japan and all of the Dharker Studio games.

-1 :) depends on what you are looking for. Go go, is perfect if one plans to visit Tokyo (not Japan lol) for the first time, story, as per most vn are standard

From your list i think Shan Gui is the best, i heard that it has good story, and also try these VN of the century : http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/676/

Shan Gui is the best of the lot though if you are a fan of cringe, any Sakura game is a must :P.

I have a lot of VNs left to play, but I have played 2-3 of the ones on your list. Shan Gui is more of a read, I don't remember having any choices to make, but it was cute and interesting, pretty short too.
Soul Gambler was one of the first games I played on Steam, I definitely recommend that one. Loved the art style, lots of different endings, and it's one of those games where your choices actually matter.

I liked it as well, although you barely do any choice (there only one and I don't think it even affects the game much).

fault - milestone one is good. Quite lengthy compared to other VN's (about 9-10 hours).

Depends on how fast people read, I finished it in 5 hours. :3
Time flies by when you're reading an VN that good, heh.

Would recommend against Sakura titles, they have very few choices and the story is meh as hell. Just a few lewd scenes here and there. Nekopara has some really good art and animation but again the story is lacking imo

Yeah, to me Sakura Spirit's value is mostly in (intentional or not) camp, it's so stupid that it's entertaining. Sakura Angels wasn't anywhere as amusing.

Fault - milestone one, definitely!
After that, go for Shan Gui.

+1 for narcissu, but they are really sad. If don't like the theme about dying, don't start it.

I haven't read clannad, so I do not know about that one. *Eden was sad on a Different scale But All of them where not on his list, but narcissu is free and easily added.

How does clannad compare to *Eden?

fault - milestone one is great, Shan Gui is short and sweet, Always The Same Blue Sky also on short side. Unhack is hit or miss; I personally think it's okay, but not an amazing experience.
If you're interested in something from outside the list, eden* is really good.

As somebody mentioned before, don't bother with Sakura series unless you like to enjoy things ironically.
Bermuda is made by the dev of Unhack and is a massive step down compared to that one, I don't recommend it.

I didn't play any of games you mentioned (except Soul Gambler which was very weak as a story AND as a VN) but I really liked Everlasting Summer. It's free, it took almost 16 hours HOW MUCH? ಠ_ಠ of my life and I guess it was time well spent :3

Out of these? My favorite one from those is Quantum Conscience. It's a bit different form a normal VN but I found it enjoyable.

All of Roseverte's games that I've played have been dull until about 3/4 of the way through all the routes. This is especially bad for East Tower, since it's sold as four separate games and the interesting twist doesn't happen until part four (Kurenai). I ultimately liked both Cafe 0 and Duplicity, but I wouldn't recommend either of them to a VN newbie.

Both fault and, to a lesser extent, Shan Gui, are good, so I'd say go with one of these two. They're both kinetic though, which means you won't be making any choices through the story (well, there is ONE choice in fault, but it only changes a couple lines and doesn't affect the plot). Shan Gui is around 2 hours long and fault around 10.

I'd start with the short ones first, helps clear out the backlog =P Shan Gui and Forgotten, Not Lost are under half an hour each. I'd also recommend Without Within, which is free, ~5 minutes long, and really adorable.

Narcissu 1st and 2nd are pretty good linear VNs if you're looking for a somber story.

Amazing detective VN with well written story (10-20 hours long), good characters, nice art. just must play
