Uhhh, yeah. I'm kind of new here. so.... err, sorry if there's something wrong in my post.
Today, i put a post on reddit, that i want to sell evolve (Steam gift) for 14 TF2 Keys.
suddenly, a guy added me. i'm chatting with him and to be honest. i kind of new in trading.
He teaches me many things. about trading and stuff. so in the end. he said he didn't have a keys currently, and asks if i want to trade with one of his game. After the trade, he gave me the key and went offline. but...the bad thing is, the key didn't work.

Before trading, i already checked his background a little. from the comment, many people +rep him.

So, i kind of confused what should i do for now...
Should i, wait until he's online ? maybe it's just a typo.
or... should i... report it to steam support ?

I kind of, regret my stupidity....... but please give me advice @_@

Steamtrades

Also it is most likely an Evolve Alpha key you got. Plus Evolve was on a price glitch lately so you kind of overpaid heavily in terms of keys.

I think he was selling it, not buying.

Always get the game key first and pay items second. If the trader is not OK with that then there is no trade. I wouldn't trade for game keys at all, only in exceptional cases. If he truly has tons of rep (250+ on steamtrades) then probably it's an oversight and you can sort it out when he comes online.

How did he give you 14 TF2 keys with a key? That's impossible (by far) and if he said he was trading indeed TF2 keys with a steam key, then he scammed you for sure.

Report him to Steam, or threaten to report him if that would matter to him. You have your trade history which shows you traded the game for nothing as proof. Screenshot the whole conversation you had with him and upload it as another proof. They can trade ban him if they want to.

If you're new to trading and the guy you're trading with doesn't look 100% legit (many games, many trades, many friends, old account, play hours, etc), then always, ALWAYS trade only via the steam trading window until you figure how the things work. If you really traded for TF2 keys, you wouldn't have a problem.

i see.. seems like i made a really huge mistake. i only checked his steam profile and he got a 6 page of comments (all of them are +rep) ! so that makes me kind of, trust him.
but, it makes me really worried when he's offline after he gave me the key. but i guess i'll wait until he goes online.

I haven't heard of cheap keys for that game, which makes it unlikely he even had it for trade. Did the key said Duplicate or just Invalid, or it gave you a completely different game?

+rep in steam profile is pretty useless..

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Depends on the +rep. If a bunch of level 0 guys with 5 games left him rep, then he's most likely a scammer. If profiles are trustable and the rep is old, then he's most likely fine.

but you can delete negative rep, so it's useless

Permalink

He can do normal trades and scam trades half by half. All negative comments can be removed by scammer from his steam profile - that's the main problem with reps on steam profile. Fake +reps another problem.

never trade something outside of trade box. (so steam support can help you)
if you are trading for game keys (not TF2) make sure he goes first (and try your key working or not) and then proceed

steam profile rep = no rep

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Profile +reps are no reps. Only SteamTrades (and maybe other sites, I don't know, it's the only I use) +reps should be trusted.
Also you should always check a trader's profile and even if it seems legit, you should never feel rushed during a trade because it probably is a scam.

Now, find him, kill him, and drink his blood.

You cannot trust a person solely by SteamTrades +rep.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It depends on the volume of the trade, obviously if you want to do a huge PayPal trade for tf2 keys then you need to look for a guy with thousands of rep and a 5-6 years old SourceOP profile. Steamtrades above 200 rep is usually fine, I also check Steamrep and the Steam profile. (not for reps, but quantity of value of games, level, the age of the profile)

lolwut dude xD
but awww, true..... i'm gonna check their profile next time i trade.
and i feel so stupid right now. it seems that, i won't play a games for a while, the stress is killing me.
This is the first time i got scammed on steam and it feels really hurt.

Oh yeah, can i put his profile in here ? or is there any site where can i put it ? errr, i know most of you guys can handle scammer. But i don't want anyone get scammed and ended up like me. (also as a revenge ! rawr !)

No, you can't post the scammer's profile or name here, because it would be "calling out", which is against the forum rules.

There was a time when you could report those scammers to steamrep.com - but they no longer process scams where keys are involved.

You can trade with trusted ppl, if they have good rep on Steamtrades, on Steam profile +rep means nothing, it can be easily faked, you also had to check his Steamrep, Steamtrades and if he is an impersonator, not just trading a trusting a random stranger who adds you.

I thought when you buy a key for a pre-ordered title you didn't receive that key until the game it's released or maybe a few days before to pre-load the game....but correct my if I`m wrong because I'm not sure...
So how you can trade for a key of Dying Light?

GUYS i love you all, lets trade some LOVE

Not to hurt you, but aren't you a "bit" greedy? I mean you probably bought it, when it was glitched, so it's value was 5$ (3-4 keys). And now you want more than TRIPLE price for it. I know that you are not the only one, so everybody else, who is selling indonesian Evolve for 1* keys, are greedy as hell. Anyways as for trading, use Steamtrades.com . People can't boost their rep there so easily, so if they scam someone multiple times, they can be recognized. One IMPORTANT rule. If someone has CD key, HE/SHE goes FIRST. If both of you have CD keys, you have to agree in the order. BTW you can ask Steam Support to roll back the trade, if you have enough proof (chatlog, the key he gave you etc.). And yeah for unreleased games, you won't get Steam keys. You can only Pre-Purchase Steam GIFTS. You may want to use Enhanced Steam (browser plugin). It's really handy. With it from the browser, you can check a person's SteamGifts, SteamTrades, SteamRep, TF 2 Outpost and Backpack.tf profile. Keep an eye on scammers, and good luck in trading!

Hey thanks for the advice mate. true i'm too greedy at the moment there. To be honest, i just want to test if i can sell it for a high price. If he ask me to lower the price. i would do it.... as long as it's enough to get payday 2 dlc's lol xD

i don't have an income yet, so it's kind of hard to buy stuff. But, suddenly my friend told me about this game and yea.... my head filled with greed, ahaha.. silly me.

Umm if you want to test, add "price is negotiable" or something. If you say a price, most of the people think that it's firm. You can't buy it anymore on that price, can you?

i find it funny that people will be selling something then just give it away without checking the "payment".
i mean a cashier counts the money you give them before they let you leave the store
a debit/credit card needs to be approved on the machine
etc etc

get the payment first. its just that simple. you have the product that someone else wants, if they wont pay first, then keep on trucking.

Well, you're screwed. That's too bad.

You do not trade for something that is not Steam tradable. Pages of +rep on Steam profiles generally mean nothing, as fake rep is very possible. As a general rule, do not go first in any trade.

You can always go to SteamRep or Steam Support to report him, but you are not getting your game back either way.

Feeling bad for ya.. There are just too many scammers around nowadays. If you're new to steam/trading then make sure to read some guides on how to trade properly to minimize the risk of being scammed. :<

As others have told you, sadly you have been scammed. There is little Steam can do also, to them it just looks like you gave him a Steam gift.

you're not alone though, these scammers are ripping people off & setting up additional alt accounts 24/7(they are here in this site as well for more games to legitimize their accounts). I would dare to think a quarter of Steams user activity is from alts alone.

Heheh..you popped your trading cherry, grats.

Always check for Steamrep, Steamtrades and maybe /r/SteamGameSwap rep. Another good indication would be his Steam level, how many games he has on his account (because these show he cares for his account and wouldn`t risk it for a stupid 30$ scam), mandatory public inventory and so on.

Last but not least if you`re doing Paypal, he must be verified. Whenever you have the slightest doubt about your trading partner make him go first or bail.

Don`t worry, it happened to a lot of us when we first started trading, unfortunately. This is how we learnt. Stay safe!
