Whats the point in giving away games? Why do so many people do it? What is in it for them?

I do it because I'm gangsta.

Cause I buy bundles that have games I don't want/already have, and friends don't want/already have.

Give them away here, rank up to get better odds of winning games by other people that give them away for their reasons.

Also epeen.

To me, an unused key or game feels like a waste, like an untapped source of someones joy, and it irks me when I have these and they're not being used. That's the main reason I came here.
I found my way onto SG because I had quite a few keys for games that I already owned, and several copies of games on Steam that I couldn't find any use for, so I Googled and found quite a few sites like this one, and I tried a few but settled in here and lost the others.

I stayed here (and let the other sites go) because of the community. Most of the people here seems to feel the same way about their unused keys/games, and share freely. Most people here are friendly, funny, helpful, and really warm towards each other - and that's the main reason why I sometimes buy full priced titles with the sole purpose of sharing them here - the people of the community.
Nah man, I'm not saying it's perfect, there's a few trolls, and sometimes even I get annoyed and leave an... shall we call it an 'un-thought through comment' somewhere, and the site does have a few issues, but the difference with this place and many others is that most of those times it doesn't careen out of control, there aren't too many flame wars here.

And I win games. Some bad, some good, but always something new to look forward to.

That's why I give games here.

Still better this way, some of past GA:s have been fully priced without being so called AAA-titles.

Seems to be my day of misunderstandings when it comes to you.
First I thought you had strange ideas of how to eat a chicken properly, and now this.
Time for me to go to sleep and rest this useless piece of biological crap called a brain =)!

I do it because I have spare game keys from bundles and stuff. It's not worth the trouble trading them, so I give them away. I try to give them to friends before giving them away here.

It's a way to fill your selfish desires of generosity. It's like charity without a subject or a real cost. Don't get me wrong, some are actually selfless here, but the majority aren't.

Plus, the CV system allows you access to higher level giveaways, which in turn grant you a higher chance of winning.

Because if warms my heart when some poor soul with 3000 games takes a game I paid money for, adds it to his collection with no intention of playing and doesn't even thank me for it?
Nah I kid. Honestly... for the most part we all buy more games than we can ever play and it's nice to share, even if it is just leftover keys from the bundles you buy.

Because two years ago I was visited by a cat in a space suit called Darth Vader from the planet Vulcan. He told me that if I don't give away games on this site he would come back and melt my brain with his extraterrestrial powers.

Its fun for me. It makes my day a bit better when I get a visit from the space cat, so I want to make someone elses day a bit better and give them a space cat visit, even if it is just bundle leftovers or games I already own.

About three quarters of the users here derive sexual gratification from giving games. The other twenty five percent gets off on "pony play". This place is packed with perverts and it's gross! It's like I'm the only normal one that slathers myself in butter before doing the deed!!

The 25% that gets off on 'pony play' pay me for art commissions that I use to fund my giveaways. It's a functional ecosystem - but I do scrub myself really hard when I shower...

Thanks! I forgot about the 1-2% that like to scrub themselves really hard in the shower.

It seems cute when my cat licks me, like she's cleaning me. However, your comment reminds me that I've had this sneaking suspicion growing in the back of mind over the past four months or so that I'm being tasted. :/

At first it was because it made me happy. Now it's just to justify my leeching. I enter and win a lot of great games, and I like to give back to the community when I can. The rest of the time (bundled trash, etc) is just because I don't need it.

  • Giveaways are way less work than trading. And I'm lazy.
  • Most giveaways I do are from games in a bundle that I either already have or and I'm not going to play. Why shouldn't someone else play them?
  • Sometimes if it's a game I really liked and it goes on big sale, I'll giveaway a copy to support awareness for the game.
  • Sometimes it's a game I bought when optimistic, thinking I'd play, but I now realize I'm never going to get to it.
  • I like the community here, and giveaways support that.
  • Sure beats leaving games unused in a long text file or spreadsheet.
  • Leveling up is Fun!

Personally for me:

  1. Sometimes I want a few games from a cheap bundle and just kind of have leftovers I don't want but also I don't want to just let them stay laying away.
  2. To level up on here so I can enter higher level giveaways because the chances of winning a game open to literally everyone is too slim to actually have much of a chance at all.
  3. Sometimes I end up with a game that looks really fun but I know there are other people who would enjoy it much more than I ever could.
  4. I like making others smile.Sometimes people get really really excited over winning a game and it warms my heart seeing others so passionate about something I myself could not get into.
  5. I get have pretty bad anxiety and sometimes challenging myself to get through it is helpful. Every time a key is successfully received, I feel a huge weight drop off my shoulders. I thought maybe if I keep on doing GA's, it could help me get used to the feeling of having to do something that makes me anxious and remind me that not every challenge I give myself will end up being life shattering.
  6. I really appreciate the site and the community and I feel as though giving back is the least I can do
  7. So I don't have a terrible ratio. I know I like winning games so I'd feel like garbage just winning and winning and having a trash ratio.
  8. Might use it as an excuse to socialize. I'm really bad at talking with others and I feel like the deeper I get myself into a community, the more of a chance I'll get to interact with others.
  9. Gives me an incentive to stay. I already put a fair amount into making my account grow on here so I feel a sense of commitment to it. Sometimes I let go of things too easily but if I feel like I'm already in pretty deep, then I'll more often than not stay. I think ending up here has been one of the best things to happen to me for a number of personal reasons, I know it's been nothing but good for me with helping me grow and I don't want to end up stupidly just letting go of such a good thing like this.

Because Santa was mean to me once. He really hurt my feelings. But I vowed to show him. I would show them all! I would take my revenge by being a better giver of gifts than Santa ever was!

I've got some ways to go yet, especially when it comes to brand recognition.

To make someone a little happier, even for a few minutes.

And to gain some blacklists - there is no better way to earn some fresh and crusty blacklists than giving away some games 😇
