You could buy it as a gift stored in inventory, then wait for original to go on sale. If you give up waiting at any point you can still trade or give away the copy in inventory.

Holding an indie game is always a bad idea.

Deponia 1 was bundled in the past, #2 might end up bundled before he has a chance to play.

Check trade forums, someone likely still has keys from that Indie Gala.
