---Hello, for those of you seeking a giveaway among the question, I will put something up later if I am satisfied with some answers.(yes, that something later is Fortix :D)

---Now I have played football (american) for 3 years now. My season just started for me yesterday. I am 6'1 160 lbs. and am decent at the sport. I've actually been the defensive leader on the team, but here are the problems.

First, our team has 12 eligible players + 2 injured. That means games are gonna be aweful, and non-stop playtime

Second, I really dont want to put in a lot of time to the sport if the season can be taken away by 1 or 2 injuries

Third, I've lost interest in the sport. Going to practices and games isn't something Im excited to do, they feel more like chores.

ADDED Fourth, I don't plan on playing college ball, so playing football won't benefit me that much.

ADDED Fifth, I don't know what other sport I should play, besides track anyways.

ADDED Sixth, I'd feel bad as the 12th person on the team, leaving so that they only have 11 players.

Lastly, My coach is an...interesting guy, and I dont want to tell him I'm quitting.

---So here are my question

Based on all of my problems, should I quit?

If I quit, how should I tell my coach?

ADDED What other sports are fun to you and why? I could choose from cross country, soccer, or basketball.

---Thank you for your help in advance, and again, I will post a Fortix giveaway later when I have time as long as I get a few satisfying answers.

clicky

Please only pay attention to the below

Just got back from practice...realized a few things. One, I pretty much set myself up on the top to hear what I wanted to hear. Chances are Ill think the same way by tomorrow morning, but something's holding me back from quitiing and it isn't being scared of it. I realize I may not love the sport, but I dont hate it. Idk, Im just sort of ranting now. I wanna hear different opinions because reading those help me think. Thanks!

That's reason enough to quit and find something that you do enjoying doing.

It's.... a sport. If you want to quit say, "Hey, this is just a sport and I think I'm done. Bye, coach."

Your life, your prerogative.

tell him you are gay

I think that in a sport that involves a couple dozen burly men getting into each other's personal spaces to fight over an overgrown suppository, that that's not going to be a sufficiently shocking confession.

What if the coach is gay?

Well i've tried so many thing from various sports to debate club and if I quit i quit beacuse of your third reason i simply havent seen the point in doing something my heart is not in , and I know speaking to your coach might not be easy but if you want to quit pick your balls up and do it BUT be damn sure thats what you want to do cause it will be hard getting back if you change your mind

"Life is too short" so don't be a pussy and just tell him. You think this will be the first time he loses a player? It certainly wont be the last unless he is retiring this year.

Yes, you should tell him you are quitting

And for sports: I love tennis and golf (and maybe basketball but I got bored of it when I was young)

It might not just be the sport you're tired of, but the responsibilities on the team and the environment you're currently in. Try just taking part in some games on a more casual basis with less pressure, you might find what inspired you to take part in the 1st place. Otherwise play some of the true football the rest of the world plays or rugby if you like to make some crunching tackles, depends how simple you like your game

You shouldn't let temporary sentimental feelings to hold you back from moving on to future.

Not so temporary...even last year I dreaded practices and games some. Sure, the occasional great tackle is awesome, but when you get cracked it's sort of balanced out

By "temporary sentimental feelings" I meant the feeling of not wanting to betray your team and telling your coach you're quitting. So I meant that you should quit, Because if you fell out of love for something, it is very unlikely that you'll be able to fall in love again with it.

I think you should quit, if you arent in love with the things you do try new things.

Personally i like playing tennis and soccer, but i dont know, maybe you dont need to change a sport for another one, you should try new things i dont know, playing poker, painting, singing, playing some music, try to become a profesional lol player, xD whatever...

How old are you anyways? Because i think you shouldnt worry so much for those things, dont be afraid of talking with your coach, you just need to tell him exactly what you told us, the game doesnt fulfill your pasion, you dont like the idea of losing the whole season because of an injury...

I'm going to be a sophomore this year, so still got time to do other things, also got time to lose though.

Quitting is for wusses, especially if you're changing sports altogether. Don't let your coach down, but if you absolutely want/have to, you should sit down and have a talk with him. Especially if you're very close.

Also thanks for Fortix. :)

if you're not going to attempt to pursue and excel at it, you'd best save your energies for other things. You could take up track, martial arts, or perhaps parkour? Something to keep you in shape so that when you look back, you don't say "I wish I stayed into sports."

I quit Football too, twice, the first time the coach make me back, he was being a pain in the ass trying to get me back, calling me, and trying to know why i left the team, so i acept to get back, then i have an injury on an excersice, were i was afraid to get injured i told the coach that i wasn't able to do it, but he make me do it anyways, so I use that injury to stop going to practice and to quit.

While the decision ultimately rests with you, you need to stand on your decision. If you decide to stay, be clear about why you want to stay. (e.g. "I signed up for the season, and I want to finish what I started.") If you decide to leave, be clear about why you want to leave. (e.g. "I have no desire at all to play the game.") What you DO NOT want to do is have one foot on this side, one foot on the other. Do it, or don't do it, but don't do it half-way or you'll screw both yourself and your team.

If you're really struggling to find clarity, I suggest talking to your coach man-to-man. Tell him about why you want to stay and why you don't. Tell him you don't want to hurt the team by not having your heart in it. Tell him you're trying to decide how you really feel so that you can come to a decision. (It's not an easy decision to make.) He's an adult, and he's supposed to be there to help you find clarity. He should know the benefits and drawbacks to the various options you have. (Yes, there are more than two options, here.)

I like the answers Ive been getting, but if Im making the choice, I don't feel like there is much point in talking to him about it. Knowing him, he'd just tell me to stay, give me a speech, and send me on my way.

It doesn't matter at all what your coach wants.... he is not living your life. Just let him know your decision.

What is important is what you really want. There are situations that you can't control but sports is not one of them. Is not so important. The Life is too short (at least for a 40 years old guy as I am)!

It's hard to quit, I remember when I've quit my PhD studies. But at some point you have to make priorities in your life. And if american football isn't a priority for you anymore then you should quit it. A good coach will understand that you have lost interest and he'd gain nothing if he'd field you.

The problem is you currently feel obligated to other people, of whom you most likely won't remember their name or face in 20 years.

I had to take a break from football(European) just because of injury, couldn't play for 2-3 years and after those years passed i couldn't get back just because of my big ego, anyways im dissapointed on my decision.

Well I was right when I said I'd probably wanna quit again by morning. I'll go to practice once more, have the next day off, and will see if I quit then or not. Thanks for the answers, BrandeX's point was especially good.
