EDIT #2:
I learned about the difference between DAC and amplifier. Also apparently my motherboard doesn't have a built-in amp and that's why I'm not quite satisfied with the maximum volume I'm getting. For this amp to work on my TV as well, it looks like I need a non-USB device, such as Fiio A3 formerly E11K (around 100 canadian $ / 70 USD). I'm reading reviews and looking around but might very well buy this.

Thanks again for the info!

EDIT:
I'm very happy with all the great info I got, thanks a lot to this awesome community we have here. If anyone cares, I decided to order Audio-Technica ATH-M50X! I received them and I think they are great. However, I feel like the highest volume on my PC is not very loud. I mean it's loud enough to enjoy music and games but I feel like it the headphones are physically able to produce much more volume than that. On my TV, I have no control at all on the sound level, it's always at maximum which again is loud but not that loud... and sometimes it might turn out to be much too loud depending on my mood and what I'm watching.. having no control is not fun.
So I looked into FiiO E10K and other amplifier. Would it allow more powerful maximum volume to my headphone without losing quality (or even increasing quality?). Would it be compatible with both TV and PC right from the normal audio jack?

Thank you very much if you decide to answer my questions again!

ORIGINAL POST:

Hi guys,

First of all, the younger crowd here will probably think I'm weird. Maybe even the older ones. I never owned real headphones, or headset. Never owned a mp3 player or even a portable CD player before that. I only had ear plugs on my walkman, you can tell it has been quite a few years haha! Yes I'm weird, and getting old. I never even owned anything made by Apple yet... (I have an Android phone don't worry)

Compared to many people here, I'm more of a casual gamer and I exclusively play single player. I don't have a webcam, don't use Skype and such and don't record let's play videos or anything of the like. I also don't have a console, only PC.

You're still reading and can decipher my flawed english?

Ok good, because now I would like to invest in decent headphones, my budget is around 100-150 US$ (negotiable). I may put more because it's a long term investment but not much more, I'm just not going to spend $400 on best-quality headphones even if I could, because I think it's pointless for what I need.

Ideally, they would be wireless, would work both on my computer and on TV for watching movies loud late at night. It may or may not include a microphone, but it's only a "nice to have" and should be removable if there is one. Main usage is for PC gaming, then movies on TV, and finally music. Those are my requirements!

A few questions now, because I know next to nothing. Do I need a special sound card on my computer? What kind of wire or connection do I need on my computer, and also the TV? Is there something important I should know about compatibility and such? Can you recommend a brand or model?

Please keep your advice newbie-friendly, don't go too technical if possible. :)

Thank you!

From the all listed, I would go with the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x. It has one of the best sound stages for gaming, and it will work perfectly with anything else you can do.

I have an AKG K240 Studio, I would consider it too if you have the chance. Superb for any use. I used to mix songs, but its also awesome for gaming for its great sound stage, great frequencies, everything is so well balanced. Sounds so natural and organic for music too.

I'm not very into sound cards because I only used one. And its not really a sound card, its an audio interface (M-Audio Fast Track II) but it works like a sound card. Difference is that its external and has slots for instruments. I don't think it will make that much difference, so if you really want it I would go with anything recommended on audiophiles forums and places like that.

If your motherboard doesn't have a built in amplifier for your sound its likely its simply not putting out enough power to properly drive the headphones. I have M50x's running through an M Audio M Track Plus. I don't turn them up more than 1/3 volume or so. They get very loud quick(while still maintaining audio quality). It sounds like you need an audio interface or amplifier(I went with the M Track plus because used gear at a Guitar center for half the price of the interface I was going to get for the headphones).

Thank you, my motherboard is possibly the weak point. However I believe an amp could be useful for both TV and PC, correct? And on the PC my motherboard limitation would no longer matter, right?

Hi, I got Audio Technica ATH-M50X, they are 38 ohms. I think they sound great, the volume is high enough to enjoy them but I am kinda disappointed by the maximum level they can reach. All the models I tried in stores were much louder...

If you buy an amp it will help with your tv, the M-Track Plus is a USB device so I don't think it would help with the tv. Since its the same on the TV I would guess your motherboard simply doesn't have a built in headphone amplifier.

Yes, I believe you are correct. I got a great explanation from SirMarth01 on the first page of this post. I am now looking into Fiio A3 which is only an amp, not a DAC. Again I learned a lot of useful stuff and am grateful of the Steamgift community!

Superlux HD681. Actually bought 2 of them, very good sound for the price. Consider it on your next buy, though, since you've already decided. Cheers! :)

I already got my headphones but now I'm looking at an amp because I feel like I'm not getting the full power of my cans.. Thanks for your reply though!
