EDIT #2:
I learned about the difference between DAC and amplifier. Also apparently my motherboard doesn't have a built-in amp and that's why I'm not quite satisfied with the maximum volume I'm getting. For this amp to work on my TV as well, it looks like I need a non-USB device, such as Fiio A3 formerly E11K (around 100 canadian $ / 70 USD). I'm reading reviews and looking around but might very well buy this.

Thanks again for the info!

EDIT:
I'm very happy with all the great info I got, thanks a lot to this awesome community we have here. If anyone cares, I decided to order Audio-Technica ATH-M50X! I received them and I think they are great. However, I feel like the highest volume on my PC is not very loud. I mean it's loud enough to enjoy music and games but I feel like it the headphones are physically able to produce much more volume than that. On my TV, I have no control at all on the sound level, it's always at maximum which again is loud but not that loud... and sometimes it might turn out to be much too loud depending on my mood and what I'm watching.. having no control is not fun.
So I looked into FiiO E10K and other amplifier. Would it allow more powerful maximum volume to my headphone without losing quality (or even increasing quality?). Would it be compatible with both TV and PC right from the normal audio jack?

Thank you very much if you decide to answer my questions again!

ORIGINAL POST:

Hi guys,

First of all, the younger crowd here will probably think I'm weird. Maybe even the older ones. I never owned real headphones, or headset. Never owned a mp3 player or even a portable CD player before that. I only had ear plugs on my walkman, you can tell it has been quite a few years haha! Yes I'm weird, and getting old. I never even owned anything made by Apple yet... (I have an Android phone don't worry)

Compared to many people here, I'm more of a casual gamer and I exclusively play single player. I don't have a webcam, don't use Skype and such and don't record let's play videos or anything of the like. I also don't have a console, only PC.

You're still reading and can decipher my flawed english?

Ok good, because now I would like to invest in decent headphones, my budget is around 100-150 US$ (negotiable). I may put more because it's a long term investment but not much more, I'm just not going to spend $400 on best-quality headphones even if I could, because I think it's pointless for what I need.

Ideally, they would be wireless, would work both on my computer and on TV for watching movies loud late at night. It may or may not include a microphone, but it's only a "nice to have" and should be removable if there is one. Main usage is for PC gaming, then movies on TV, and finally music. Those are my requirements!

A few questions now, because I know next to nothing. Do I need a special sound card on my computer? What kind of wire or connection do I need on my computer, and also the TV? Is there something important I should know about compatibility and such? Can you recommend a brand or model?

Please keep your advice newbie-friendly, don't go too technical if possible. :)

Thank you!

For something cheaper than your budget, but still good quality, I'd recommend looking into Monoprice. They have wired and non-wired (Bluetooth) headphones and headsets (headphones with microphones - often times built in, so not clunky or "in the way"). I'm not sure how to make them work with a TV, but it would be easy enough on a computer.

Brands that are good even on budget level: Audio-Technica, Sennheiser.
Can't help much more because it's been a long time since I actually researched these things.

If you want a microphone too, buy it separately, headsets usually don't live up to their price.

Totally agree on this. Solid brands with very, very good entry level gear. You can't go wrong with any of these.

Also, I'd add to stay away from anything with "gaming" in the name (or beats, urgh)

Most headphones can just plug-in to your audio jack and be fine without any drivers needed. Check your laptop/desktop for an audio jack. For example, A laptop might be on the sides or back, while the Desktop is typically in the back most of the time (though some models have it on the front).

If your going for something to connect to the TV, I'd have to ask if you have a stereo connected or not. Or you can just buy a cheap connection headphones which connect directly to your TV.

The word "compatibility" isn't the word so much as "comfortable". I like more bass, so I got skullcandy. I also have a cheap pair of earphones for everyday walks/runs. You have to ask yourself:

Do you like more bass on music? Are these going to be mainly for a computer, or will you be going out with them? Do you typically listen to Orchestra (myself), or something like pop music, disco, jazz? Etc.

I don't own the most "expensive" headphones in the world, but I got a decent quality kind called SkullCandy. The typically go for $50 or cheaper. The reason i bought these were because they got rid of outside noise, and because they already increase the bass of songs for me. (which I typically like).

If the base began to be too much for me, i'd merely adjust my equalizer.

Hope I didn't go overboard on you, feel free to ask any questions

Hi, interesting reply thank you!

I have an audio jack in front and also in the back as well, but it's made for a small plug. Should I just assume that all headphones/earphones have the same size of plug? In other words, no need to worry about this?

For the TV, I do not have a stereo, but I have a smart TV full HD with several kinds of connections in the back. Yes I do like bass, for music I mostly listen to old rock and heavy metal, orchestra is good as well occasionnally. I do not plan to regularly bring the headphones out, but I might start to enjoy listening to music on my Android once I have them. They will be mainly for computer, secondly for movies and third for music, on the couch or in front of my desktop (which is also plugged on the big screen TV).

I noted your SkullCandy suggestion, thank you very much for your input!

What do you like to use headphones for on your computer? Music? Videos? Games?

One thing I'll strongly think you should note is not every headphone/earphone have the same jack. However, they all typically can fit into a computer or laptop so that's not the worry. The main concern is if you ever want to grab a replacement jack-to-jack because a previous one broke, you'd need to make sure of what size it can utilize. Typically thicker means it lasts longer.

I knew this but didn't know my Headphone jack couldn't make it fit! I had to manually remove the outside metal part at one end with a knife before it finally fit, and even then it didn't quite properly. When you buy a headphone that has a removable jack, make a note of it's size. Also you can make a note of the quality of the jack and length (if you like to sit back on the couch without having to be close, you can get a longer jack, etc.)

Mostly games. For example I want to play horror games and hear the surrounding noises, I want to enjoy the atmoshere, and I want to put some volume even late at night! But mostly games, yeah. And movies on tv.

I checked the SkullCandy, since they are wireless I suppose they typically come with a base which is also the charger and will be plugged in the sound source (pc or tv), via an audio jack?

Aye, if you look online for headphones that have already increased base (like SkullCandy) then you turn up the volume, it's very immersive. I've tried this on Alien: Isolation, Dead Space, and Outlast. The thing that the bass does well to bring out when playing horror is the low ominous notes. Also when I was playing Isolation, the thump thump that the alien made were deep and heavy. Really puts you on edge at times (until you've died so much it just becomes tedious).

The SkullCandy I enjoy wired, mainly because I've not been looking into wireless. Skull-Candy's primary selling point is the Bass which is increased, and with noise-canceling as well. I looked online at the Bluetooth Version on Amazon. On 950+ reviews it's got 4 stars and after reading the reviews, it's the same as a wired except this version uses Bluetooth.

http://www.amazon.com/Skullcandy-Bluetooth-Wireless-Headphones-Black/dp/B00NCSIN4W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461078778&sr=8-1&keywords=skullcandy+wireless

If your phone or device has bluetooth, this will work. If you want to connect your Bluetooth via computer/usb, you can also grab a nice cheap USB BlueTooth addition

http://www.amazon.com/Kinivo-BTD-400-Bluetooth-4-0-USB/dp/B007Q45EF4/ref=pd_bxgy_23_img_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1PC67BRHFZCXE3YBP41W

Since it's a 4.0, it's a little newer and faster than some older brands, but its not the "best in the world" type. It's still a great addition for the price if you want to use the above headset on your computer. This will cost you less than $100 (your price range) and depending on the type of Skullcandy Blluetooth you acquired, you could even get it cheaper.

They also according to reviewers, work even when the battery is dead if you have the jack-to-jack. The battery is rechargeable, but I couldn't figure out how exactly. That is something your probably going to need to investigate.

If you have a store nearby that you could try headphones on then I would recommend that, or if you have friends that have one that you could try.
For ports- a usb port or a 3.5mm jack(like computer speakers/earbuds normally plug into)- a sound card is not needed unless you became an audiophile
I have heard good things about the HyperX cloud 2 ($100 usd)- although they are wired not wireless.

For this price, I can live with wired, as long as I can used them both on my PC and on the TV. :)
But since I have a rabbit, I tend to eliminate wires as soon as possible, otherwise I always have to be extra careful or he will bite them!

Thanks for the suggestion! At least it looks like I don't have to worry about the jack/port I'm gonna use as it's pretty standart. :)

They have a removable microphone. The cable goes to a 3.5mm port- then to a little box with volume/mute/microphone volume which ends in a usb port(and if you use the box w/usb then they are simulated 7.1 surround)

Basically what I can conclude over all the comments and from personal experience here is your best options.

Hyper X Cloud: $80, best soundstage and great for gaming but not the best for movie and video watching (compared to other in price range)

Audio Technica ATH-M50X: $120, known to be one of the best pair of cans you can get for the money, closed back design creates great passive isolation; overall best choice

Senheisser HD598: $150, had better audio quality and more comfort than the M50X, but has a semi-open back design which means that people can hear what you're listening to and you can hear them

Permalink

Yes, agreed! I think I'd rather get Hyper X Cloud 2 than the basic one since it has surround, but the Audio Technica is probaly the pair I'm more curious about.

Also I think I have answers for all my questions: audio jack is pretty standart and not a concern, USB is common as well. Anything should work both on PC and TV, but I will have to verify the wire lenght before buying. Wireless is not as good quality as wired, however I'm still not sure if I should rule wireless out yet...

what I have is sony MDR-XB500 the line is currently discontinued but it is a style you should keep your eyes open for.
sound is meh
no fancy features like noise cancellation
but where it shines for a gamer is they are comfortable, lightweight, and breathable after the black stuff on the cushions wears off
so they can comfortably be worn hours on end
the key is cheap ass flat light speakers with a super soft huge ass ear pillows glued on.
I'd be amazed if it cost them more than 3 bucks to make a set, they were only discontinued to make way for more expensive less comfortable junk, crappy monopolies.
anyway as a gamer keep your eyes open for some sort of clone of them if you can pick them up for $50 or less

I use Turtle Beach PX22 (I think that's what they're called). They are wired but have a long wire. It has a little box that is used for control of volume from games as well as people talking from Skype or whatever (I know you don't use Skype but nice to know if you ever do use it). It also has controls for treble and bass and that kind of stuff on the same box. The box is part of the wire and has a clip on it so you can clip it onto your shirt or something. It has nice audio quality too. I got mine on sale for about $50. I think they are normally about 75. They are great for the price. You can also plug the headset into your phone which is pretty useful if you're like me and despise earbuds with a passion. I'm not sure if it works on a TV. If the TV has an audio jack and a USB port then it should work just fine. Hopefully this is helpful to you! There's definitely better headsets but for the price it's great. Also, sorry for any weird grammatical errors. I'm on mobile, it kinda has a mind of its own.

These are probably the best headphones I have ever used. The microphone quality is really good for a headset, no issues whatsoever. Sound quality = amazing. EXTREMELY comfortable. They're just amazing. :3

Also, I think it is worthwhile mentioning in this context that the headphones come with a variety of different wires, each of different length to fit your needs. You'll have one cable coming out of the headphones and then you can connect the extras to your pc and tv without having to move all the cables over, just the original headphone cables. Probably my favourite feature.

I'm very into my headphones (own/owned dozens and dozens). Usually I recommend the Sennheiser HD 598 as a good all-rounder that almost everyone will enjoy, and they're also easily driven - no need to worry about amplification.

But these are open headphones, makes for better quality but means sound will leak and you can still hear ambient noise as well. Would you need closed headphones instead?

No microphone either, which you tend to find on 'gamer' headphones which don't sound as good. But you can get things like http://www.modmic.com and attach to a better set.

There aren't really any good wireless headphones aside from some pretty expensive ones with proprietary wireless systems. Bluetooth, even with apt-x, sounds dreadful.

I will mostly use the headphones home alone, in particular when it's late at night and I want to put some volume into my games or movies without bothering anyone (I'm living in an apartment). Earing ambiant noise is not an issue. :)

I'm personally really picky with headphones, I get headaches really easily and the last 4 or 5 pairs I've bought gave me them quite easily. I bought the Sennheiser HD 598 7 months ago and absolutely love them. They are comfy, I can wear them for hours and hours at a time without a problem. Sound is great, have been perfect for what I've needed to play games and watch shows online. The only downside is that they aren't really noise cancelling at all, so it could be a problem if you have a very noisy house or loud traffic outside of your open windows etc.

HyperX Cloud II are great bang/buck, gaming headset that is basically a good regular pair of headphones rebranded for HyperX with a detachable mic. Also has 7.1 for gaming (obviously you won't use it for music), you can turn it on and off at the push of a button as you please. Simple 3.5 jack, long cable. The HyperX Cloud (not II or 2, whatever) are basically the same minus the 7.1 and it has 2 jacks instead of audio and mic combined.

In that price range, I'd recommend also investigating music specific stores, something like musiciansfriend.com

In my experience many consumer branded headphones often don't compare to the stuff I've bought from music stores. For the kind of money you're talking about you can get some pretty nice headphones. Reviews from studio pros will be nice as they often spend much of their day in studio with headphones on tracking and generally have good ear for sound quality and isolation, as well as comfort. I'm uncertain about state of wireless headphones for that, but that's where I'd look first before gravitating to consumer brands.

fwiw, my favorite "bang-for-the-buck" headphones are Yamaha RH-5ma, but they are wired. I'm not sure how available they are anymore. I think you can do very well at the bottom of your budget range if you're ok with a wire instead of bluetooth. I only had one set of wireless headphones and they didn't sound anywhere near as good as my wired headphones - but that was many years ago, and I'm sure things have improved - but I'd still compare sound quality.

all imho

It's just my first thought as my background is in music/recording/studio area. There's alot of pretty good headphones for well under $100 and I'd hate to see somebody buy the hyped up stuff driven by marketing unless it's something that fits exactly what they need. Reviews are your friend though - some expensive headphones sound cheap, and some inexpensive headphones will sound very good. It's kindof weird.

btw, the Audio Technica and Sennheiser mentioned above are professional brands that usually produce good quality stuff - although I do have a Sennheiser set of headphones that weren't the best - but I can't recall the model - I could've just bought a cheap pair on sale. Usually Sennheiser stuff is good. If I bought another pair right now I'd go for another pair of the Yamaha's though - I really like those. Some off name stuff can sound good too for less $ - just read reviews.

Fellow Sennheiser HD 598 owner here. Very comfortable, great sound. Well worth the price. The only warning I have (and this warning isn't exclusive to the 598s, it can be an issue with any headset, really) is that you might hear low, but constant static instead of silence when you plug a headset into a headphone jack on your computer. That's EMI (electromagnetic interference). Want to experience proper silence, instead of that static? You'll need an external DAC/amp. I use a FiiO E10K for that purpose.

I've also heard a lot of good things about the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x, too. Can't really go wrong with either headset, from what I understand.

This guide might be useful. Prices are a bit outdated (598s are put into the $200-350 range, but can usually be had for ~$150, special edition is $130, vs. $120 for ATH-M50x), but still somewhat useful.

EDIT: I know others have gone over open/closed headsets, but there are similar things to look for in mics, too. Could go with a ModMic, and that has unidirectional (less sensitive, less background noise) vs omnidirectional (more sensitive, so you can be quieter and it'll still be picked up, but background noise gets more easily picked up, too). For more conventional desktop mics, you have condenser mics and dynamic mics. Condenser mics are more sensitive, and can sit further away while still picking up your voice, but allow more background noise. Dynamic mics are less sensitive, so you have to be closer to them for audio to be picked up, or you have to speak louder, but if you have a loud mechanical keyboard and don't want that picked up, or have lots of background noise, you might want a dynamic mic.

I personally have an Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB Cardioid Dynamic USB/XLR Microphone, but have heard good things about the Audio-Technica ATR2500-USB Cardioid Condenser USB Microphone. Lots of fans of the Blue Yeti USB Condenser microphone apparently, but I've come to the impression that it might be overpriced for the quality.

There's a reason they're both very popular. They hit that sweet spot between quality and price.

I know others are recommending some gaming headsets, and while they're not bad, they certainly won't be as good as the 598s or the M50x with a separate mic, in terms of both listening and recording quality. Wireless headsets potentially introduces delay, so if you're playing something very competitive and fast (competitive Counter-Strike, for instance), might want to avoid that. (Also, having to charge your headset and worry about battery life would suck, I imagine. As for virtual surround sound, I didn't have much luck with the time I tried it. (Logitech G430, when it did work it wasn't particularly impressive. When it didn't work, it just messed with audio quality in a rather unpleasant way. Driver issues didn't help make the experience much better.)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hi again, I am absolutely not into competitive games, and not even multiplayer of any kind whatsoever. Do you think the delay of wireless would hinder the experience for movies and atmosphere rich games (such as survival horror and fps like Deadspace or Bioshock, action RPG like Darksouls or Mordor, etc... that's what I will mostly play with them)? I want to buy something that will last for years and not regret it. Thanks!

I imagine the delay/latency issues for wireless headsets generally isn't too bad (especially if you're not into competitive games), but like anything else, look up reviews before you buy. If there are issues, someone will probably have mentioned them somewhere.

If you're dead set on a wireless gaming headset, this might be of use to you. I still think getting the 598s or M50x plus a seperate mic is the best choice, but it's your money, and you're buying for yourself, so buy what would make you the happiest. Remember that.

Hi, I received my ATH-M50X today, and I think it's great. However, I feel like the highest volume on my PC is not very loud. I mean it's loud enough to enjoy music and games but I feel like it the headphones are physically able to produce much more volume than that. On my TV, I have no control at all on the sound level, it's always at maximum which again is loud but not that loud...

So I looked into FiiO E10K like you suggested. Would it allow more powerful maximum volume to my headphone without losing quality (or even increasing quality?). Would it be compatible with both TV and PC right from the normal audio jack?

Thank you very much if you decide to answer my questions again!

The E10K would work with your PC, but not your TV. It's a DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) and an amplifier combined, so instead of taking a sound out slot from your computer's motherboard (or sound card, if you would have one), it uses a USB port and does the conversion from digital signal to analog signal itself, then amplifies it. It doesn't have any other input than USB, and your TV almost certainly won't know to send the audio signal via USB, so it won't work with your TV.

So here's the fork in the road: if you want just an amp to increase sound levels, you can get the FiiO E11K at ~$60; if you want a DAC/amp combo, the FiiO E17K at ~$140 will work. Note that both are portable, battery-powered, and rechargeable, so you'll want to make sure you keep them charged. They'll both take audio in, so you can use them with your computer, TV, cell phone, or any DAPs (digital audio players, or "MP3 player", if you will) you might have. The major difference between the two is that the E17K can act as a DAC/amp combo, so if you plug it into your computer via USB, it'll convert the sound itself. This would eliminate any EMI (if you have any), and theoretically boost sound quality. (While there are some objective observations you can make about how a device outputs sound, quality will, of course, be almost entirely subjective.)

Of course, there are other brands on the market offering similar products, so take a look around at places like Head-Fi.org or such if you want.

You are more useful than all websites I have been reading for the past couple hours! Thank you very much for spending time writing this, it's really appreciated.

Just to be clear: I can't claim to be an expert on the topic. I am not an audiophile by any means, and the only products I've used that I've mentioned are the 598s and the E10K.

That said, you're quite welcome!

You have been a good guide to explain the basis and help me look by myself at what I need, that's more than enough! :)

The ATH-M50X aren't too good these days. Their predecessor the M50 was very popular because it was often very cheap, for many people they were their first 'real' set of headphones, they could be used on the move as they're closed, and were easy to drive and pretty well built. As a result were heavily over-recommended as an entry-level set of cans at a time when there weren't so many other options, which has continued to this day despite all the other options that are on the market. Audio Technica milked this with different colours and minor changes like the M50X.

So if you were after some closed headphones with a limited budget more than five years ago then you might be in the market for these. Nowadays I'd look elsewhere, and in your case you needn't compromise sound quality with closed headphones.

Someone else has mentioned some AKG headphones. The Q701, K702 65th Anniversary Edition and K7XX which are all near enough the same are very good and an upgrade over HD 598 in some areas (though not as good for games, smaller soundstage). But they're probably above your budget. The Philips Fidelio X2 are often mentioned alongside these headphones, I've only tried the X1 myself. They're a jump in price also.

If you want a budget option have a look at the Samson SR850 (or the Superlux model they're identical to). They sound truly incredible for the price. If I couldn't afford the 598's I'd probably get those over most open headphones below that price.

I would recommend this one as it is the headset i would buy now if i had enough money.

And this one is the one i'm currently using.

Edit: From my experience, the best things you can do when you wish to buy headphones are 1) go to the local store and hear them or 2) read reviews about them online.

Reading reviews about the Sony you would buy, they seem to be pretty good for the price! What's your opinion on wireless sound quality & delay compared to wired? (also this one comes with wire so it can be used both ways, which is good!)
Thanks!

As far as my ears can tell, i haven't understood any difference between wireless and w/ wire headsets. The same goes for the delay. I haven't understood any difference because i didn't pay much attention. I care only about the sound quality.

I can recommend AKG, I own a pair of K702.
I prefer neutral/transparent headphones, i feel that's the way to listen to music because, you can better hear how the music was mixed and meant to be by the artist.

For long sessions, Over-The-Ear headphones are the best choice, because they don't press against your ears

Ii would recommend K240 MkII or Q701 (comes in lime, white or black) for your price range

They seem to be in the higher range of my budget, or slightly above, but the reviews are excellent. Thanks for your input, I didn't know this brand!

AKG is a very reputable Austrian manufacturer. I think they got bought by Harman (Kardon), though.
Other good brands are obviously Sennheiser, Audio Technica and also Beyerdynamic.

Edit: forgot to mention Shure, though they are well known for their in-ear headphones, they started building on-ear and over-ear headphones a couple years, ago

I have a pair of Sennheiser earbuds, not a headset, but I must say the quality is amazing and I like the brand. That's my (limited) 2 cents.

Sennheiser.
I own a Sennheiser PC350 for 7 years now and it still has an awesome sound.
It hurt my wallet bigtime back then (116,62 euro) but I never had regrets.

Sadly its not wireless. I dont like or need wireless myself. Its only for gaming. I had a wireless mouse once, but it ran out of power on a LAN during a competition I was playing and then I told myself never again.

I saw some very good answers but just want to say some more things:

  • You can't use the usb-port from your tv for a headphone. It's mostly for storage devices.
You should def. take a Headphone with normal audio jack.

  • Also i would not recommend some wireless option. Mostly the quality is not as good as wired and you need to recharge them.

  • The 7.1 headphone think sounds fine but you will mostly don't have a 7.1 source so it's more or less "fake" and I would not take this either.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x or Sennheiser HD 598 are tge way to go ;)

a big point in headphones is: how does it feel: so if you would like to spend $100 for headphones try them at first because everyone has a different head and sometimes it can hurt if the headphone is to small or it just don't fit well, is to warm...

Not sure if you can just send the headphones back if you don't like them without problems (we can do this in germany) if so: order and try both

Oh yes I got great answers, very helpful! I'm not surprised, but I'm quite pleased by all this feedback. However you are bringing something new to the table about the USB and Smart TV information so thanks a lot for your post.
