Saints Row 2, Saints Row: The Third, Metro: Last Light Redux, Darksiders 1+2.

To break free from your shackles. To take that first free step and breath of fresh air. Oh, the exhilaration of a newfound freedom to be played anywhere, at any time!
It's what we like to imagine today's releases would think if they could think. That's because today we do our part to unchain five major titles (each brilliant in its own way) from every tiniest bit of DRM that they've ever known. That means they're being released completely DRM-free for the very first time, right here on GOG.com.

The five titles unchained today are:
--Metro: Last Light Redux (-50%) - The 2014 remastered re-release of the blockbuster horror/FPS set in post-apocalyptic Moscow.
--Saints Row 2 (-60%) - The surprise cult hit that reinvigorated the open-world action-adventure genre with its unique sprinkle of quirk. Complete with the GOG.com treatment to work flawlessly on modern PCs.
--Saints Row: The Third (-66%) - Quirk overload. The massively popular open-world action-adventure that flipped a genre on its head.
--Darksiders + Darksiders 2 (Up to 75% off) - Hack and slash done right. Become a horseman of the apocalypse and fight as Death himself.

All five releases (and extra DLC package for Darksiders 2) are discounted for one whole week, that's until Monday, May 18 at 12:59 PM GMT.

I wonder how their version of SR2 performs. I played the PC port on Steam and it was an utter disaster.

Maybe they integrated the fan patch/mod into the installer or DeepSilver gave them the source code and they fixed it properly. They say they did improvements and it would bite them in the ass if they lied about it. So in other words, GOG version is better than the Steam version.

Just install the Gentlemen of the Row mod and it works great. Fixes the bugs and the controls and it is made by someone who now works for them too.

Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't get it to work properly until after halfway through the game. The first time I installed it, it didn't fix anything, just changed the logo in the main menu.

Too bad you can not redeem already bought steam games,i have bought pretty much all those on console then on Steam i will not buy them a third time just for DRM

Still this is a great step and great for those who may have not yet bought these or are willing to buy them again for DRM.

Yea it'd be great if GOG allowed Steam games to able to get redeemed at GOG.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

GOG do support redeeming keys from alternate sources however its ultimately down to the publishers to decide whether they want to provide copies to previous purchasers. Whilst it will bring potential new customers to GOG every time another game allows this it also costs them sales for those games as there will always be people who don't feel the need for a second copy giving away/reselling their keys.

I bought The Witcher on Steam and then redeemed the key on GOG but a friend gave me his key from the second game to use on GOG.

TL;DR People need to stop expecting GOG to provide free games as its not their decision.

Lucasarts, Toonstruck, Star Trek games, they are making more and more very good decisions while steam only makes bad ones lately.

Agree... Also the steam client needs an update so badly. it still uses the very old version of chrome. Its slow and buggy and not as user-friendly as it once was. They need to innovate on a lot of things.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, bloated client is my real grief.

It's just its massive library and very tight community features that makes Steam the real king.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Valve should make Steam modular and let users choose which features they want to install. I for one don't care about the music, big feature and broadcast feature and I wouldn't install them if that was an option.

It would possibly increase the support workload though, which would mean Steam support would take months to respond.

what does DRM mean?

DRM

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You can install your software on anywhere you like without the need of a client such a steam.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Uhm, no.
A client doesn't mean there's DRM involved. GoG has a client, still their games are DRM-Free.
A game that doesn't need a client like steam or galaxy can still have DRM. A serial or product key is DRM too.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes a serial or product key is DRM too, but some people do count Steam as DRM too, after all the majority of games on steam you can't play without the client. You can install Gog games anywhere you like, you can't do that with your steam games, that is what i meant.

so longshot here what happens when u play the same game [same key] on both steam and gog ? [never tried gog]

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nothing? Both will be treated like separate gaming accounts. You can interchange the save files, afaik. but someone can correct me on this.

Same key may only work in certain cases. See this thread.

Permalink

Is correct, though there might be a game here and there in which either uses a different or outdated version that savegames might not work.

I misread it the same way. I thought they were giving away all of those games.

I also misread the title. Yet everything there is right xD

Maybe it could be fixed by add a "-" between "DRM" and "free". You hear me OP?

can u buy a game thats drm free and then make a copy of the folder that has the game and then give it to your friend?

You can and noone is stopping you from doing so, but it will be considered piracy though, no different from that friend downloading a torrent or getting it from you.

Saying its considered piracy implies that its debatable. Yes you can do it, but it absolutely is copyright infringement/piracy.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's a tad cynical, my friend. ;-)
I have most of my games on Steam, but some games I've bought on GOG because either 1) I wanted some of the free extras, like soundtracks 2) they were on sale on GOG or even a freebie 3) Steam reviews said the game was broken/hard to get working, or 4) I wanted to play a game achievement-free.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The most strange reasons which i've ever seen: soundtracks, achievements, "steam reviews"<"gog reviews". Lol.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I like game soundtracks, and often GOG give them for free...plus other freebies.
As far as reviews, I was just saying that the Steam reviews said that the Steam version is broken and to get it elsewhere. So I got it at GOG.
The achievement reason is a bit strange, I'll grant you that. ;-)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I have lots of games on Steam and I still use GOG. Sometimes for games that aren't available and sometimes for the extras included. Not everyone who uses GOG is automatically a pirate.

Sometimes the GOG versions of games are also objectively better as is the case with HoMM3. GOG version has all the expansions and can be modded to be HD. Steam version is an official HD release but doesn't have the expansions. Steam version is also more expensive.

How do you download games if you're not online...?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Differing functionality doesn't mean objectively better, some people might prefer steam features such as cards and achievements. THen as different versions of a game they aren't directly comparable. DX:HR - DC for example might integrate the DLC and open up the boss fights but it's based off of the unpatched vanilla release and so reintroduces bugs that had been patched in vanilla. Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition includes the HD texture pack that was DLC for vanilla which may be a problem with people with lower end machines.

because some are tired of drm?
or for example in case of ban on steam all your games will go away cause of drm ;)

You won't get your Steam account banned.

....

All they do is removing your ability to trade or buy new games. Banning account as punishment is not longer an active punishment.
